The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Well, looks like Famitsu has posted a trailer for Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label EX (DDPDOJBLEX, sounds like a really fucked up porn genre)

http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/1218492_1407.html

Pretty awful way to advertise the game IMO.
New character looks unremarkable, and zero about new game modes etc. Yeah there will probably be a few more trailers, but frankly I think we will be lucky to get a straight ahead port here without some major fuck ups.

Ketsui X of course is the more interesting package since the game has yet to be ported. Hopefully 5pb won't screw it up...

Mmmh. Shooters. Me like.

For me shooters are R-Type, Parodius, Axelay, Jets'n'Guns, Pocky&Rocky. Stuff like that. I could never warm up to those Bullethell games. Hate me all you want, but I am utterly disinterested in Ikaruga aside from the colorchanging/bulleteating aspect and the neato selfadjusting difficulty (continue/life unlocking). I also idolize Rez, but that's not quite the same genre despite the "on-rails shooter" moniker.

Aside from that many bullethell games creep me out. No more lolis, schoolgirls, busty babes, or robots please. That also means no more busty loli schoolgirl robots, or any other combination. It was funny to see a bunnygirl ride a rocket (hurrr hurrrr) in Parodius, but my tolerance for those shenaningans has worn thin over the years. I just want to sit in a spaceship/plane, evade a moderate amount of bullets and shoot down the entirety of an invading fleet, power up on extras and take on huge-ass endbosses in spectacular battles of epic proportions. So manly and testosterone-filled. No need for voice-acting or much of a story. For some odd reason anything else just doesn't sit well with me in that genre.

Doesn't mean I'm not in awe when someone plays through those kind of games and posts that on youtube. It's clearly a matter of personal preference. So rock on you guys and buy lots of games to keep shooters alive. There has to be the occasional oldschool shooter in development out there for me.

Oh, and those gravity-based "cave" shooters were the shit back in the days. So awesome, and so hard to control.

I will pick it up anyway, but a full price release? How is possible that 5pb wanted it as a XBLA release in the first place? (how much would it cost in that case?).

I just posted up an interview with CAVE's lead programmer Tsuneki Ikeda over CAVE-STG if people are interested. Quite specific talk about the Dodonpachi series.

http://www.cave-stg.com/forum/index.php?topic=398.msg6511;boardseen#new

Also wanted to let people know that I am hosting superplay DVDs of the latest CAVE games on a friend's server. If interested PM me.

Awesome read.

I'm especially surprised about the Ikaruga
dude's too humble!
and Salamander bits.

My plan was to celebrate ESP Ra De's 10th anniversary by buying the PCB/Cabinet and playing it non-stop until I can one-life all three characters.

Guess I'll wait for the 15th anniversary. =/

Any good schmups for the pc?

Havent played any since Tubular Worlds and Raptor :S
If you're pining for cave-like bullethell games I can't help you aside from mentioning Warning Forever.
If you just want to pewpew some aliens or something you might want to take a look at Jets'n'Guns. Download the demo and give it a try, if you like it buy it or camp game.giveawayoftheday.com until the standard edition is offered for free again.

I hope they make a shooter designed for consoles one day, then I'll start caring about Cave again.

I love Cave. I actually really love DonPachi (without the extra Do). I get so easily addicted to shumps. I think the genre is just so... pure? Concentration and reflexes. Gaming pared down to the bare essentials.

Dangun Feveron is highly fun as well, and the scoring system is really unique.

And no mention of Muchi Muchi Pork? :D

Nice OP and that interview was cool, too. I remember when I first played DDPDOJ, I had to rethink how I approached Cave shooters. They always had tons of bullets and elaborate patterns, but the speed at which they moved in DOJ caught me off-guard, and I had to play the game on a smaller screen to be successful at it. I think it's the most rewarding and visceral of the PS2 ports.

Why do you want that, out of curiousity?

Unless you're talking about ports, but if you are, you're probably aware of Deathsmiles.

Not actually that important
Great post, really awesome and I bookmarked to use as in informative intro to the genre for my illeterates friends :p
BUT I personally own the PSX/PSOne's version of DDP and it is a freakin' awesome port.

I finally found a copy of Ibara yesterday with the bonus strategy book!

I've been looking forever but saw one in Shinjuku Trader and snapped it up without hesitating. It isn't my favorite Cave shooter, but I did enjoy Battle Garegga, and Ibara is even better I'd say. Now I finally have all the PS2 Cave ports.

I guess the only natural step from here is to pick up a 360.

Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi is great. It's one of my favorite shooters. Glad to see it'll be getting a console release.

Thinking about getting DaiFukkatsu myself, but think I'll wait until the price drops a bit further though.

DaCocoBrova

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I <3 this thread.

Famitsu review gives Ketsui DS a 8-7-8-6. Pretty good!

Tempted to order despite the $60 price tag. Just waiting for impressions from the Cave faithful (they've been pretty down on it so far).

I've got my Ketsui DS pre-ordered, if nothing else it's a Cave game so it will probably hold it's value at the very least :lol

Read the review, the two 8s liked the fact that the game was customized for the DS, liked the advice corner and the game's new functions. Kizuna mode, whatever that is, seems to be popular. The 6 liked the game but said that the bullets and the multiplier chips tend to get in each others way. Also that having only one course for the game is a little lacking.

Just you wait.
Next year somebody will release a Ketsui/DDP DOJXBL/Death Smilies triple-pack for $40.
And that somebody will go bankrupt.

I just figure that the difficulty would be lowered. It used to be fun to see what lunatic last boss Cave could come up with once but now I just feel that things have gotten out of hand to please the 50 people that can 1CC their games.
I also want something that's designed for hd since I don't have my old set up anymore. Though that Deathsmiles comparison looks promising.

Give me decent attract mode too and I'll shut up =)

So I'm torn on Deathsmiles.

I've been playing it for the past three weeks in the arcades here and here's my claim:

1. Great graphics overall. Some weird choices, like the fucking cow boss, but yeah pretty nice.
2. Scoring mechanic works pretty well. Basically your goal is to collect items that enemies drop and get your item counter up to 1000. Then you trigger 'power-up' mode in which the items you collect add points to your 'plus value' which adds points to each item you pick up. So basically you're trying to trigger power up mode in coordination with the sweet scoring spots on each level.
3. When you do this well, you're rewarded with huge explosions of glowing orange tiaras across the screen, breaking into smaller white crowns and finally into skulls. Awesome presentation and quite gratifying when you're playing.
4. When you pick four levels in a row at level 3 difficulty you will trigger 'death mode' which makes it so any enemy you kill spits out a bundle of suicide bullets before they die, which tends to fill the screen with bullets. Now thankfully your option can absorb these bullets and if you're in power mode then they will add greatly to your score.
5. Problem is that controlling your option in death mode is really hard...for me at least. Basically you have to orient your option towards the suicide bullets and clear a path through them as it absorbs the bullets for you. Other people may be able to do this better, but I find the way the option controls to be very alien. This sucks because death mode is the most interesting mode for me. For example the last level without death mode is a pretty boring and empty jaunt through the castle.

So...still worth picking up when it comes to 360. I mean this game is much better than Otomedius IMO, and when the screen is exploding with tiaras, skulls etc. the game is really awesome, but the weird option controls have unfortunately soured me on the game.

I really hope Aksys can secure the license for Death Smiles in North America

Due to high fees Cave asks for his games, it would have to be release at US$ 60, which will means bankcorrupcy for the company who tries it.

True but considering they're doing the port themseves, Cave is proving they've become much more progressive in the Console space than they ever were, which gives me hope.

Guwange is one my favorite games ever.

Has Ketsui been released on an home console besides DS? Most Cave stuff gets a PS2 release.
