Anime from the 80's and 90's were the best. Look here for some recommendations.

Slayers is one of the most trite and cliché-filled fantasy anime out there and I'm surprised people bring that one out when trying to mention how old-school anime is better than modern anime.

Can't believe no one said Slam Dunk yet.

Escaflowne is the reason i am into anime.

Betterman and Boogiepop Phantom were the crazy ones i fell in love with, they showed me how different anime stories could be. Tho Boggiepop falls out of your date range just a bit.

Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team was always a favorite of mine. Pretty amazing. Urasawa is my favorite mangaka so I'd recommend Master Keaton as well (a bit later in the 90s than some of the other suggestions thus far).

There's a reason the anime boom is largely over in the West and it's not entirely down to piracy and the fickleness of the mainstream.

It's not though. Streaming services are more popular than ever, with stuff like Crunchyroll growing at a decent rate all the time.

The landscape has changed, not died.

About halfway through Ranma and started Outlaw Star a couple days ago. Watched Escaflowne a little while ago too, all of them are great.

Good thread. The Kimagure Orange Road and Bubblegum Crisis soundtracks are so good. A CD for every episode of BC. How awesome is that?

80s anime is so stylin'. Hand-drawn stuff will always look better to me too. It's got that organic feel to it.

Obscure pick:

Key the Metal Idol. It's got evil mega corporations, video stores with VHS's on the shelves, and robots. What more could you want.

Such a great show and character design. I wish anime would stop using the same character designs over and over again, make new one's and maybe use some older designs like i.e. Record of Lodoss War. What a waste.

Anyway back to topic

Out of everything here, Slayers and Berserk are the ones I haven't watched yet.

I like Nadesico(Prince of Darkness not so so much). I have GiTS and Bebop on blu ray. I currently rewatching that along with the Patlabor series. Escaflowne I'd love to rewatch as well.

Maturity, bitches.
Kill Me Baby did not exist in the 80s nor the 90s therefore neither can be considered the golden age.

Lots of good recommendations in here. Just to throw in something I didn't see mentioned yet: Twilight of the Dark Master.

Wanted to add that one that my list, but couldn't remember the title for the life of me. Did a search for "Clitoris-shaped monster in anime" on google, but got nothing.

I have mixed feelings about it. I liked the original, have a distaste for Next, Try is my favorite and the last two... Evolution-R and Revolution. Ugh.

Is "Tenchi Muyo is garbage." a team?

One of the original prototypes for Harem anime along with Love Hina.

Ah, what a perfect time for this thread for me. Recently started watching a blu ray of a very nostalgic series from my childhood and was thinking that I really like older anime and don't really care to watch anything new as much.

So have people declared Team Ayeka or Team Ryoko in the thread yet?

Old school waifu wars. ;P

Tenchi Muyo is what I'm currently watching since someone lent it to me. This along with Outlaw Star, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop are series that really stuck out to me in the past. Glad that this is the 2nd mention of it in this thread that I have seen :)

Boooooo. Never!! lol. :) Yeah, the series really isn't for everyone. If I randomly started watching it now for the first time I wonder how I would feel towards it. Although, I know a couple people who like some iterations in the universe and not others like the "Universe" or "In Tokyo" series.

"The thing from when I was young is clearly the best!"

80-90's had some great anime, but come on, there's an equally great amount of shit before and after.

Hm, yeah nostalgia really does play a big part in this. I do agree that there are a lot of great series before and after though. (But I also started watching less and less anime series as I grew older and reading more manga instead).

Universe is ok. Tokyo is garbage.

For me. I loved the series, the movies and the Ovas were awesome too.. it is not perfect but it is a good series.

I thought universe was pretty good from what I remember but I wasn't a fan of Tokyo either. Was a weird standalone iteration. After I finish the original series I'm planning to go and watch the rest of the stuff in the overall series that I never watched like "war on geminar"

EDIT:

This thread is really wonderful for recommendations :)
