Green Lantern/Planet of the Apes #1

The real star of the show here is Barnaby Bagenda's (the Omega Men) art. This guy needs to be on a monthly DC cosmic book stat. The set up for the story was well written, but like the original Green Lantern/Star Trek crossover it feels like a rehash of an already existing story meshed with another IP. Fans of both properties should enjoy it, just don't go in expecting an entirely original story.

Heavy plot details in spoilers for those curious
The story swipes liberally from the recently finished Phantom Lantern arc in Green Lanterns, only instead of a lost Guardian making the ring it's Sinestro. He kidnaps members from the other Corps and through a mysterious ceremony makes the "Universal Ring." At the instant it's created, a beam of energy shoots through time and space and the ring is discovered by Dr. Cornelius in the Apes future. The issue concludes with Hal chasing Sinestro through a time warp and Cornelius putting the ring on. The ring cycles through emotions, matching Cornelius' emotional state, just like the Phantom Ring did

I don't get it why not make him desperate enough he blew up the terrigan cloud with people in it even unintentionally. The whole thing seems to tame its like they want Cyclops to do something horrible but never actually commit to do something that normal people will hate. I didn't read the Death of x comic so i;m probably confused. Why would the average human who hates or dislike superhumans in general that are not avengers give a shit about the cloud have him kill a bunch of people that would make sense

It really is but ya as much as it sucks it's ending I'm glad Kirkman is the one who is finishing it. I think for a while there he talked about having other writers take it over but I personally would've hated that.

So one of the things I had sitting around unread was the kickstarter version of Fresh Romance (rip)

Had read some of it already digitally but had forgotten it and I prefer to read a story in one go rather than in installments

Kate Leth's story was first so I read that.

On the surface, it starts off like maybe a generic teen romance story. Prom is coming up and all that.

But there's a couple twists to it that make it an enjoyable read. One of the primary characters uses magic, two of the others seemingly fawn over the guy but really it's a cover for their own romance.

There's a clunkiness to the way the story is written. Nothing about parents works all that well even if the situations and actions taken are reasonable.

There's a number of things that could have been better if there were time to explore them. The parents relationship to their kids and between themselves would be better if there was more story devoted to them, for example. It's a little too messy and I kind of just wish it had done the whole Manga thing and pretends parents don't exist.

Artist Jovellanos mdoes a good job mostly. Like the writing, it's pretty uneven at parts and you get the sense she's an artist still finding her footing, but her work effectively communicates what the writing calls for, so it's pretty easy to overlook faults.

The expressions on characters are good enough to give them a bit of warmth and charm and that goes a long way. Outfits on characters are given attention and care which is a pretty unusual thing to see.

I'm pretty sure Jovellanos also does colors (forgot to look last night). They're pretty functional and don't seem out of step although it seems the coloring was originally done with it supposed to be read digitally. The paper is printed on desaturates some colors so the line work and the colors sometimes muddy each other up. I think some minor color correction would have helped.

Overall, it's an enjoyable comic and although not very good on a technical level, you get the sense that these creators really wanted to make this sort of comic and it shows.

In regards to Walking Dead, at this point we can 100% come to the conclusion that Negan is absolutely with Rick and is much more complex of a character than "random bad guy." He's a team player now.

My assumption is that they planned on Cyclops doing something worse, but backed out and then Hopeless tried to come up with an explanation for it.

Yeah but this goes back to what Dalek just said, Marvel backed themselves into this corner. They dug the hole by telling the story the way they did, and they made it worse by backing out and creating a major continuity problem that can't easily be fixed. All Cyclops-related wounds sustained by Marvel and these franchises were avoidable and totally self-inflicted.

Nova #3 was not remotely as interesting as #2, I simply did not care at all for these villains.

The Unstoppable Wasp #2

This didn't have the emotional highs for me that the first issue had. The writing is still funny and enjoyable, but I really don't like Moon Girl and how Marvel keeps pushing this 'smartest person on earth' thing. It makes no sense and doesn't feel earned at all.

The letters page on the other hand was amazing. One of the two featured women is an Asian-American biomolecular engineer (and married to the writer of Moon Girl), the other a black analytical chemist. They are both professors and group leaders.

Wasp: As Roman said, didn't hit the highs as 1 but wasn't low either, the ending is gonna be interesting. Plus continuity and phone jokes!

Bullseye: DOPE. Brisson matches up with Aaron's MAX books and is insane. Bull fucking with bystanders was funny.

Moon Knight: Lemire is digging deep into the lore without fucking over the continuity. It's also very interesting showing how things have affected Marc before his MK days.

Nova: Still fun, Cosmo stole the book though.

Heard Gwenpool is a filler issue and that makes me sad.

DROPPED IT LIKE ITS HOT

Champions: Heard how it tackled hate and race issues...BARELY. Gwen did nothing.

I am so damn happy after reading the issue! I've been hoping for a moment like this but still can't believe it actually happened. Negan actually saved Rick fucking Grimes from being a pile of guts. Now I just need to pray that Kirkman doesn't kill him anytime soon. I really wanna see how Maggie and Carl react to him being out.

Also one of my favorite moments this issue was Negan saying to the Alexandrians, "suck your nuts up into your crotch and put your fucking backs into it!" and Rick all surprised says, "Listen to the man!" Lol.

Was it though?

I feel like people remember the Negan years with rose-colored glasses. There were highlights (most of which had nothing to do with Negan), but by the time we got to All-Out War, pretty much everyone was more than ready to put the Saviors in the rearview

Not to mention, Kirkman brought that book to another level after All-Out War

Gwenpool was probably one of the issues of the series so far and the story surprised me. Nice for on one issue story.

I really liked Nova, but I expect a certain group of people to be mad over it not worshiping Rich as much as the previous issue.

I don't remember the Negan years at all. :)

It worked just fine as fast binge read IMO. Probably would have been annoying having to wait for each issue though.

I honestly think the only thing the show fucked up was the prison arcs. Ya the cliffhanger in S6 was dumb as fuck but nothing disappointed me more than S3. Luckily that showrunner isn't around anymore.

As for this season I'm guessing you mean that AOW is the best arc but it's important to remember that S7 so far is covering the arcs before AOW. "What comes after" and "March to war" both of which weren't all that amazing in the comics. You had issues that only focused on indivual communities ( just like the show ) and you had to wait month to month for that shit. At least with the show your only waiting a week. And honestly the whole build up to the war in the comics felt rushed as hell. I really like that the show seems to be taking its time to make this war a really big deal . I'm not saying the show is perfect or anything but I don't think it's been as bad as people have been saying either.
