But I miss that feeling of recently released WotC where loading times basically didn't existed. lol

I kind of want to do a mod-free or mod-light run for that reason alone.

All those cosmetic mods are baffling to me. I haven't touched a soldiers appearance or armor since the first XCOM 2 campaign I played. I know I am weird, but I have zero interest in naming or customizing any of my troops.

Snowball in full effect now in my game, all three chosen dead and moving into the game like normal now. I am somewhat mixed on WOTC. I like what it adds, but all I feel like it accomplishes is making the early game even more difficult instead of counteracting the snowball effect and making the late game more interesting. I'm not sure i like the heavier story bent in the expansion. The content itself and the encounters are all solid and fun to play though and I love the new abilities of the hero characters.. Except for the Reapers which become useless mid game with their terrible damage output.

I'm the opposite. If I didn't have all of this customization for the troops I wouldn't even be interested in the series. I spent a good 6-7 hours setting up a character pool from scratch. Even modded it myself to make it only select from my own characters I made in the pool without randoms. I love that shit. The games being good is an awesome side effect of that lol.

Got to the end of the faction mission, and can't evac because I have a stablized soldier at the beginning of the mission, and there doesn't seem to be any way to leave her behind. Yet another ironman run ended by bugs. Ugh.

Reapers ability to go deep inside enemy territory without alerting them is a huge buff. Yes thier regular attacks are crap, but combo a claymore with a grenadier bomb and that is 15-20 damage per enemy.

I am replaying the game again and brought my reaper to all chosen missions so far and didn't regret switching with another class.

also on urban maps remote detonation is just ridiculous.

Dark VIPs like to take cover with their entire pod next to cars which is hilariously entertaining

plus, with the no-detect on a killshot ability, you don't even have to fear retaliation so you can freely use them to mop up the wounded without breaking cover and still scouting. If they roll tac rigging as well you can even give them ammo and really pump their killing ability through the roof with talon rounds

Templar > Reaper >>>> Skirmisher imo

speaking of which, are the "gain additional soldier in class" covert op randomized to a specific class? I got a second reaper but never saw the same covert op for Templar or Skirmisher.

saw a rumour it's limited to the first Hero class you get. I don't know for certain though.

I'm not totally sold on Skirmisher and I like Templar kinda but not always, but Reaper is definitely my jam. Being able to avoid activating pods for the majority of missions is such a great advantage.

The real problem with nu-XCOM i think at the end of the day is really that the pod system discourages and punishes fog-of-war exploration. I understand it, but I don't like the effect it has on me as a player where I don't actually want to fan out my soldiers or to try and circle around pods unless I already have total map control.

Man, my squad are all absolute killers late game. I never save scumming any more because I shrug off crits and wreck pods in one turn.

This is what I play XCOM for. This payoff.

The only downside is the xp needed for colonial seems too much. How many missions/kills do I have to take these guys through, damn. I have to pray for promotion covert ops.

Just finished my L/I campaign, had to extended it for a bit because I wanted to get my Templar to colonel.

Decided to actually take all of the 3 new classes + 1 ranger, grenadier and a psi-op to the final mission, figured I see how it goes even though I don't think the Reaper is that great for the final mission since it's pretty straight forward and her damage is not as great as a good old sharpshooter but I was up for a challenge.

First of all I didn't know they changed how the final room is approached. Instead of a seamless map with a bridge that connects you to the final room, now there is a loading screen and that completely ruined my go to plan which is to dominate a Gatekeeper (which I did) with my psi-op and have him go to the right side of the room tanking all the pods that get warped in (and there not much tanking really as I watch them hilariously miss one by one) while my squad stays on the other side and just snipes the avatars as they come, I guess Jake wasn't a big fan of that. Now however not only do you lose your pet but you don't get to use domination on the final room either since you already spent it which sucks, had to use the budget mind control of the commander's avatar and send one of the Archons to the same spot which worked the same way for the most part.

All in all I found the expansion to be a bit easier than vanilla (on Legend specifically). I did so many dumb things and lost a lot of crucial soldiers early that would've completely ended my campaign in vanilla but I manged to keep this one going. Overall the new tools they give you slightly outweighs the downside of fighting the chosen/new aliens which makes it a little easier to manage than before.

I activated a pod once and they ran into a building for cover. The building had a gas tank next to it, and the remote start ended up obliterating the entire building. It was hilarious. I've gotten so much entertainment out of remote start.

Is there any best time to tackle the Chosen stronghold missions? I'm feeling fairly late game right now and have a completely decked out crew. I've already killed the Assassin Chosen but I'm wondering if there is any story stuff I'd be missing out on by killing the Warlock and Hunter before doing the last couple main story missions? Does anything change by having or not having the Chosen around for the last couple story missions?

I guess for that matter, can you just finish the main story missions without even doing the Chosen Stronghold missions? Or does the game force you into doing those at some point regardless?

I believe the surviving Chosen will appear in the final mission.

As for forcing you to kill them I don't think the game does this but I haven't gotten to that point yet.

About to do my first Stronghold and I'm nervous. I suffered losses on a downed UFO assault in South Africa. It was the first mission to feature an Archon and he one-shotted my combat specialist.

The Assassin is about to force the do-or-die mission on me so I really want to kill her asap.

I feel like folks are sleepin' on skirmishers.

You don't use them as pure shooters, though they are reasonably competent at that. The fact that no action is turn-ending means they're quite versatile in many disparate situations and can do a pretty good job of jumping from place to place making life hell for the aliens.

You can pull enemies into a vulnerable position with Justice and then reposition the skirmisher using Wrath or Grapple (remember, Grapple is a free action). You can Grapple up to an enemy position, use Justice to pull another enemy in, then move them to another enemy out of the blast radius of the grenade you just set up the enemy force to get hit by, while also shutting down that third enemy with Retribution (which is just Bladestorm by another name).

And, of course, it's always nice to be able to grapple up to a decent shooting position to get that height bonus, though that's not something unique to skirmishers - still, they require no extra investment to get that ability, so that's nice. That on top of being able to shoot twice at the start (granted, with SMG-level damage, but still) makes them a pretty consistent mainstay in my latest campaign. It's great to be able to ever-so-slightly mitigate RNG with more chances to roll. They also have a pretty good Overwatch tree, but admittedly, I really don't like relying on Overwatch, so the only one that ever saw use during my last campaign was Battlelord (which lets you use any action after any enemy action).

They're not flashy, but they're versatile and fun to use. And damn, I love their aesthetic so much! They've got some of the best armor graphics in the game. Wish I could stick that armor on all my soldiers.

Finally beat WOTC tonight. Loved it!

BTW, when did they patch the final mission so that you're unable to get out of the large room with all the gates, and set up your squad outside on the roof of the "human habitats"? It used to be fun to funnel the aliens out through that one corridor, and absolutely destroy them with an overpowered squad (with the height advantage) set to overwatch. The fight inside the room was pretty entertaining, but it wasn't quite the flawless Xcom domination party I was expecting going in to the final mission. One of my guys was grazed by a Muton before I took down the 3rd Avatar. Oh well. :P

I love skirmishes. Once you level them up they can do insane damage and allow versatile movement for you or your team as well as extra actions for you or your team. Their actual damage output is low, but if you can combo your abilities together you can put out insane damage on the aliens.

Many times I try to not have my skirmishes on overwatch so I don't lose ammo and turns for reload.

Also they changed the ship/ufo mission in the expansion? I am playing it a 2nd time and the map is a lot smaller than I remember and the objective is much closer to where you start. You can even snipe the objective close to where you start, which makes the mission even easier.

There's quite a bit of lore on the Chosen in the archives, but what I find interesting is that the "canon" pairing is:

Reaper vs Hunter
Skirmisher vs Assassin
Templar vs Warlock

But if you play with Lost and Abandoned on, which is what most people will do, then the first two don't match. Now, if you play with it off, then it is all random, meaning that very few people will ever get the "official" rivalry.

Funny thing is, in the mission, Mox know who the Assassin is, not Dragunova. Wich would imply that the "canon" pairing was what they planned for (at least the Skirmishers vs Assassin). But i guess they changed it because fighting your first chosen without it's nemesis class could be tough for a first campaign start.

I think the reason they went for that is to show(and it's kinda dumb, but the cutscene reinforces it) that without teamwork all the factions would get murdered by the chosen that's hunting them. The reaper in the first cutscene with a chosen saves Mox from getting assassinated, assassin mentions that's the first time she's ever been caught before murdering someone. Dragunova mentions that the one that hunts the reapers(the hunter) has been quite successful at murdering reapers.

Basically the dumb aesop here is that separated they'd all get murdered, together they can counter each others' nemesis'.

I'm still running 4 guys in stock gear and maybe 1-2 promotions, and the game is already throwing stun lancers and... these new priest guys? What the fuck. I'm trying to get to magnetic weapons asap.

It's amazing how one guy getting flanked can easily snowball into a full team wipe. It's rough.

Third, he scampers, Mox shoots him through a wall and executes him immediately.

How bad is that? Is there stuff I'm going to miss by not having her as a named character? Like dialog and cutscenes? I'm probably not screwed out of beating the game, but I don't want to miss too much of the new content.

You won't miss anything and you can even get a second reaper via covert ops... not sure if it's RNG that the covert op to recruit a second reaper class shows up, or if losing the reaper increases chances.
