RIP Sir Roger Moore

Most of his movies were bad, because he was Bond in the era where EON didn't quite know what Bond was supposed to be. So they kept feeding him bad stuff. But his best Bond (Spy Who Loved Me) is one of the best Bonds, and no matter what crap they gave him to work with (and no matter the fact he wasn't intimidating at all, and flat out could not run) his sheer charm was enough to overpower almost anything and make his Bonds watchable, even lovable.

He did it the longest, and even people who didn't like him, liked him, yunno? You're probably not supposed to have such a likable guy as your assassin spy, and that was probably the contradiction at the center of his playing the role, But that contradiction is what kept him around, what made him a legend.

Simply put, they lost their cash cow when Connery left. Replaced him with Lazenby for X number of films. Got a good film out of him, but it was a major disappointment at the box office coming off Connery's films. Then their new Bond up and quits. They have no choice now but to overpay Connery to come back, and then they had to recast again. That is a disaster. 3 Bond actors over 3 films in 5 years, with OHMSS only raking in about a third of what Thunderball and Goldfinger did in North America.

Moore brought stability.

Ok, I'm with you. IMO, I think had he not quit, Lazenby would have settled in and the series would have been fine, but who knows, right?

Moore absolutely had the right sensibility to carry the series through the 70's. He was the right man at the right time.

While I do think he stayed around too long, that's a whole other interesting story.

I'm partial to For Your Eyes Only. Doesn't feel like a Moore film for the most part.
It also feels like Bond is doing a job a spy might actually do, and it doesn't culminate in some supervillain's implausible lair (which then explodes). I'm rather fond of it myself.

Nooooo :(

This one is gonna hit me hard, I grew up watching his Bond movies over and over with my Grandparents...one of which I lost last year to cancer. Fuck

RIP you amazing man. I will miss you.

There was definitely a concentrated effort on that one to go back to basics, though that was largely due to the budget on Moonraker going completely berserk. I've always felt that it really should have been a Dalton film, since it's a bit tough to buy Moore as a more cold-hearted Bond (which was true even back on Live and Let Die, which really felt like it was written for Connery), but the more lo-fi approach to that film has always been appreciated.

Kristatos was also a nice change of pace for a villain: simple arms dealer that has his hands on some other unsavory elements (including whatever the hell he was planning on doing to Bebe), and the film didn't need much more than having two spook-like henchmen to do his dirty work.

And Rog doesn't get any more cold blooded than in FYEO:

RIP to the only Bond who dared go to space and dress as a clown. Not the best Bond and doesn't star in the best Bond movies, but potentially the most charming somehow. Godspeed buddy. :/

Oh absolutely. I like Lazenby a lot and love OHMSS. Lazenby himself wasn't the disaster, but rather the 5 year confluence of events that led to the OG Bond quitting, new Bond quitting, groveling for OG Bond to come back, then recasting again.

Like, look at how Tobey Maguire was Spider-Man until 2007, Andrew Garfield was Spider-Man until 2014 and Tom Holland was Spider-Man in 2016. People already say that is insane. Now imagine if that were over the span of 5 years instead of 9, and if in between Garfield and Holland Sony had lured Maguire back for one more. That'd be the Bond franchise between 1969 and 1973.

Wow had no idea he was feeling so bad. RIP! Definitely the campiest Bond, but also the one who could be really fun at times as well. Hardly my favorite, but hey I respect the man and his work.

The Bond I grew up with. Obviously he had some stinkers, but Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, and The Spy Who Loved Me are all-time classics.

I'd say For Your Eyes Only is probably the most underrated Bond film, it's ridiculously good but nobody ever talks about it.

It wouldn't be my ordering, but those are definitely the best films of the Moore era. Even the lesser ones always had at least one great element in it that was poking out from the nonsense (that goddamned amazing car flip in The Man with the Golden Gun, everything that came out of Drax's mouth in Moonraker, the finale in Octopussy and Walken's delightfully loopy performance in A View to a Kill).

Classy guy,one of the golden age of crooners...he was great in The Saint and The Persuaders, with Tony Curtis(this had a great title translation in french,it was called ''Amicalement votre'') , and the James Bonds of course.

RIP.

I'll also say Christopher Lee is a wonderful villain in MWTGG, and Moonraker's obvious Star Wars bandwagon-jumping is cheesy in all the right ways.

Also in AVTAK, Moore has a sex scene with GRACE GODDAMN JONES.

You're mixing him up with Barry Nelson, who... also died at 89. Huh.

No, that honor belonged to Barry Nelson, as the US TV program Climax! adapted Casino Royale for one of their episodes. I haven't seen it myself, but I have always wanted to since they had Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre, which is pretty tantalizing casting.

I can't believe that the internet lied to me. Inconceivable. Is anyone else going to do a Bond marathon in memory of Moore?

A true legend, one of the best actors the world has ever known.
He had class, brawns and brains, a real great example.

Rest in peace, Sir.
He will be missed, my condolences and thoughts are with his family.

I'm gonna watch one of his movies tonight, still undecided as to which one. Probably The Man With the Golden Gun, to honor Sir Christopher Lee as well cause it would be his birthday next saturday.

I should, which reminds me I still need to pick up the most recent Bond Blu Ray Mega Set.

I grew up watching Connery and Moore's Bond films on rented VHS tapes so it's about time I went back to them.

RIP. Some of his Bond films were certainly bizarre and campy, but I still find them more interesting to watch than Brosnan/Craig's weaker outings, which just come across as generic forgettable action films.

Aw. By all accounts, he seemed to be such a pleasant and classy old chap. I'll have to revisit his (better) Bond movies some time soon.

RIP, Commander. o7

With the way they played the scene out, it's the other way around! You know Mayday hate-fucked the shit out of Bond.

Another piece of my childhood, and another piece of British cultural history, passes away with him.

I hope he had a restful and painless death.

Sigh.
