Did Monolith Soft run over Square-Enix with 'X'?

Seems like an online multiplayer game, so it is not something i would play

I dont game online or play multiplayer games

Of course that does not make FF13 any better :)

Are we going to compare portable development/game with a console one?

Other people are comparing a developer that has released at least 50 games this generation to a developer that has released 6-7 (only one of which people actually care about). Square-Enix has released several good games this past generation. Unfortunately, their flagship Final Fantasy titles were not included on that list.

The trailer shows little to nothing to judge it's seamlessness over. All we've seen is a relatively small island with basically no background other than a skybox. It's only slightly more impressive than the open area of FF13 near the end. Of course it looks better and performs better, but isn't that expected due to the WiiU being more powerful? Let's not jump the gun here.

We know extremely little about the game. For all we know it could be a mission based co-op game with little depth. It looks more like Lost Planet than Xenoblade right now to me.

I'm not saying it is, and I'm not saying it doesn't look great, because it does, but let's try to keep our wishful thinking to a minimum until they release more info.

All I need to be happy is Xenoblade with better graphics so I'm most likely satisfied.

I think we can say for sure it will be a very large JRPG, that's what Monolith Soft and the director of this game, does. And the game might be not semless (although the last bit indicates otherwise), but at the very least, offers much larger scenarios and a bigger scope.

What we saw is much larger than the largest single zone in FF XIII.

(also we know that Wii U is quite closer to 360/PS3 in terms of graphics)

No, I think not.

That being said, taken by it's own merits it does look pretty damn good!

You're comparing a tech demo to an actual game trailer? Even if the graphics/gameplay isn't indicative of what the final product is, at least Mono announced the game and had a trailer to show for it.

No. I'm talking about a company that still has a tremendous stable of artists and tech wizards; not the 'gameplay' aspect of it.

They should be embarrassed by the way Wada is currently running the company, but they are still producing some stunning looking products.

Holy shit what is this game and why have I not heard about it? I love giant robots.

Is it seriously just called "X"? That's gonna make it hard to Google, anyone want to drop some links?

It's Monolithsoft's (Xenoblade) new game. We don't know the title.

Don't think Type 0 can really be compared to a console game.

Despite Type 0 being the only good new FF in recent years.

And yes comparing a tech demo to a game will get you nowhere. It's not like they will make use of the engine they pride themselves on.

Monolith is a great developer and I'm sure this game will be great but I don't see what the relevance is to Square-Enix - when they manage to put out a compelling product with great quality (and this is what you can argue that they struggle at) then it obliterates everything else. What exactly does Monolith have to do with this?

I'd say there's a little bit of relevance given that the principals in Monolith are ex-Square employees.

I'm playing XIII-2 and I disagree....

Can't really compare the 2 games when they are on 2 different generation of systems. I would think a better comparison would be FFXV on the PS4/720 to X on WiiU, but that's not the point of this thread.
Under this ideology then Square Enix's inability to put out Versus in a timely manner in a console from a "lesser" generation than the WiiU is even more shocking.

I think that MonolithSoft could overtake Square Enix if X if it plays as well as it looks and has an engaging story line. SE has really disappointed this last gen in the RPG department on home consoles with sequels no one really wanted and unreleased gems fans are still clamoring for.

I think people are jumping the gun a little bit with HD towns and huge open worlds. Neither of those things were suggested in that trailer, and neither of those things were present in Xenoblade. This looks very, very much like HD Xenoblade with guns and mechs. That's not a bad thing, mind you -- Xenoblade was my favorite RPG of this generation. But I think there is a lot of blind optimism being thrown around about what this game will be.
We played different Xenoblades.

In a fantasy looking area. That's not to say that I think it looks bad, because it's the opposite actually, but I will always be more excited for modern/futuristic/sci fi settings.

Hm. Well what we've seen of X looks a lot like Versus' outdoor areas...except better visuals, larger spaces, and of course, mechs.

He meant handheld products.

Nothing Toriyama does is stellar.

And I hope this topic doesn't start some kind of stupid fanbase war because I'm most likely getting both when they are released.

I wasn't talking about Toriyama inability to write something decent, I'm talking from a visual standpoint....

HEY! Academia was fucking awesome.

The game has some shinning moments, but a great part of it is incredibly dull with almost constant framedrops...

Academia constantly runs at 20fps...

With Nintendo publishing Dragon Quest outside Japan to better promote the series, maybe Square-Enix can publish (and advertise/push) X in Japan to better promote the game.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

It's Tetsuya Takahashi and this game already has a transforming mech. There will be sci-fi.

In all honesty SE is getting a lot of indirect shit recently. I mean... even NB is getting praise.

Well SE is being pretty shit lately, no doubt about that.

XIII-2 is a cheap ass cash grab game, of course it looks less than stellar.

The water doesn't even react when you walk in it, I won't ever shut up about that because games in the fucking PS1 era can get that right but this game just fucking couldn't handle something that advanced I guess.

Could be a futuristic space colony. Highly-advanced town but untamed wilderness beyond the walls.

We played different Xenoblades.

Technically the towns weren't HD in Xenoblade, but they were huge, so that isn't a great point.

However, Xenoblade wasn't open world in the same way that something like Skyrim or Fallout New Vegas is. Areas were still segregated into maps, and you were still shunted to specific paths, even if the maps were larger than is typical for jrpgs.

They ran over Square-Enix with Xenoblade.

This is just them backing over the corpse.

You got me. This made me laugh. I also completely agree. I'm about 18 hours into Xenoblade and it's the best RPG I've played since FF7 (possibly better than Skies of Arcadia even) so far.

Every comparison is unfair. For Monolith.

They are a small company that managed to release a game with fucktons of content and huge areas, and they are about to release a second one.

Meanwhile, one of the biggest Japanese company can barely release a gameplay trailer for one of their most hyped game because they are too busy (according to Nomura) redoing Noctis's eyebrows or whatever.

It's pretty insulting for Takahashi and co.

Note sure if Mono run over SE.

but I think that in 6 months Nintendo japan studios did better job jumping into the HD era than what SCE Japan Studio done in 6 years.

tech-wise - on similar hardware too-this game for en example blow everything from SCEJ,which tell a lot about how bad SCEJ was this gen.

And this is the crux of the problem. People are quick on lambasting Square Enix for the apparent quality decrease in their games when they have bigger issues behind them, while, at the same time, the Versus apologists ignore the production problems behind their game of choice. Versus was announced in 2006 ffs.

I guess I'm ok with Monolith not making great horror games in favor for their softer Japanese division making great JRPGs.

lol

What interests me about Versus is its aesthetic; that it seems to be set in a world that is near-modern and could possibly be somewhat more tied to reality in its characters and story.

Guys fighting dinosaurs in mechs is pretty much the polar opposite of that.

Versus is very likely to have an outdoors segment as shown in the video, so your point is completely lost on me. the dudes in the video are using mechs. mechs use fuel. this game looks much more sci-fi to me than FF does.

What Square Enix? What Versus?

This is the day Monolith Soft bitch slapped SE silly and showed them how it's done.
God damn.

Fuck SE.
Fuck Capcom.
Fuck Versus.
Fuck Monster Hunter 4.
Fuck Nomura.
Fuck Toriyama

I think "about to release" is being a bit generous though your other points are quite valid.

I think, however, this speaks more to SE's Creatives over complicating things rather than just following through.

Because this thread was created in some way to discredit Square-Enix because they can't do HD games?

Xenoblade didn't feature towns that even close rivaled FF12's. And this Xenogears Trailer we got showed zero towns.

It's not hard to make HD fields and mountains. Square is clearly taking a lot of time to make their games.

Xenoblade has huge fucking towns, what?
