Posting inconsistent anime art in the manga thread. lol

The complaints about One Piece's art style have always been misconstrued.
Oda uses a lot of western inspiration in his art, from character designs to architecture.

His favorite cartoon as a kid was Vicky the Viking, which has very round and lanky proportions for the characters.

There's also heavy golden-age Disney inspirations in the designs for animals and other races.

Looking at how Oda has evolved as an artist is extremely fascinating. He's one of the last few shonen mangaka to still draw traditionally with copic markers and nib pens.

Some early art from Color Walk 1:

We already know that Oda was also heavily influenced by Dragon Ball to such an extent that he was always drawing large animals with the human characters similar to how Toriyama did it.

I'd argue that Oda didn't fully come into his own as an artist until post-East Blue.
When we go even further to the more technical levels, such as hatching, framing, atmosphere, my favorite stretch has to be Skypiea to Thriller Bark.

Skypiea had more usage of empty backgrounds and cross-hatching, Water7/Enies Lobby has more bombastic angles and more darker tones, and Thriller Bark had more shadows and creepier aesthetics to match the horror theme.

Early One Piece is very clearly Dragonball influenced when it comes to backgrounds and paneling, which is probably why a lot of the early environments are scarce forest and country areas.

He still uses some of Dragonball's techniques, but far less.

When you talk art styles, are you talking about the manga or anime? Because I think the anime does a terrible job representing the manga.

Yes it is, unless you are thinking of non global successes.

I'm talking DBZ, Naruto, Saint Seya. Series that everybody knows in the entire planet.

I'm not talking about influence neither quality.
I would neither call any of those 'realistic' or 'cool' they are generic anime artstyles.

Well.. 'cool' maybe I give you that, but not realistic.

Also I bet you barely anybody here in Germany knows Saint Seya.

Was just gonna say the animes/mangas with the best artstyles are sadly not that popular globally.

One Piece may have an odd artstyle but as often marketing and advertisement were probably more the reason why it is less popular, One Piece is getting finally some advertisement again in Germany and suddenly it is booming again here.

Saint seya is popular worldwide?

It's massive in Latin America. It just never took off in the US.

Dragon Ball's art is no more "realistic" than One Piece's, though.

Also, while Saint Seiya was quite big, One Piece is definitely bigger internationally. One Piece's non-Japan figure was 66 million copies sold. I'd be shocked if Saint Seiya was more than 10-15 million (which is still huge, obviously).

Got into One Piece by buying the game around Vol 9? It was when Don Krieg was defeated. It's been like 15 years or so and I always feel the best part of One Piece was unrestrained imagination. Oda is very creative in this.

- One Piece in Japan (Volume 1-84): 350,000,000 copies printed.
- One Piece in all the world (42 countries): 66,000,000 copies printed.

Willing to bet Taiwan was a huge market.

First non-Japan One Piece merchandised shop was opened in Taiwan iirc.

Lol, Saint Seiya is not anywhere near a global success as One Piece, Naruto, and Dragon Ball.

Your argument about an IP needing to be "cool" and "realistic" is baseless. Neither of the properties mentioned are "realistic" in the traditional sense of the word, and "cool" is such a vague, subjective way to describe something. Anything can be considered cool in the eyes of the right person.

dunno why, but luffy's hat in this pic annoys me....its legit the only thing I don't like about his PTS design. I mean the top of the hat is more....pill shaped, then a dome.

It looks really weird on that pic but i dont think it has to do with a post time skip change. Just an odd pic (which is probably also not drawn by oda). It's not like that in the manga.

Or am i missunderstanding and you don't mean post timeskip by PTS?

Luffys hat definitely got bigger after the time skip

By PTS I do mean post time skip, its something I've noticed...its not bad art just weird is all, like the crew got their details amplified by a ton and its sorta weird in parts. Like somebody above saying chopper is super cute now just for the sake of being cute sometimes. I think the most like their old versions of design there are is Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro.

That's just how Masayuki Sato (character designer for Strong World, Z, and Gold) draws Luffy's hat.

Yeah i mean chopper is an example that's quite obvious. But i never really noticed luffy's hat getting bigger. Even if it is, it's not as bad as in that pic though.

Looks like a Diglett there

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
I know I'm late to the art style discussion but I never had a problem with it. Maybe the Western style is what made me gravitate towards it more than its contemporaries. Though I was 13 and I felt most manga looked the same.

Now I can see smaller differences, and that only half of the manga out there look the fucking same.

You know how Oda could fix the whole Pudding thing?

Her memory powers

If it's revealed that the whole wedding has been an edited and Pudding didn't actually break down over something as stupid as her eye being complimented. It still can mostly happen like it did, but her 'showing vulnerability' this is just another veil of bullshit so that she can part on good terms with the strawhats, while she gets away with some kind of advantage, leaving them none the wiser.

I don't see another way of redeeming Pudding. This whole "But no one thinks my eye is pretty" thing has to die.

I doubt that's gonna happen tho :(

While the way it happened was a bit over the top, I still have faith in Oda with Pudding. I'm curious to see how the various aspects of her personality all come together now.

Are you thinking Oda will go baddie or good with Pudding?

At this point it's all about what Sanji can do and Lola stuff is.

I'm feeling like he's going to go "genuinely twisted, but also wanting to go against Big Mom". I don't think we'll see her become a generic good guy, but I think we might be in for her rebelling against Big Mom.

I kinda wanna just walk up to my wife and say
"Luffy just be this cracker with the help of his homies" but she's anime only so she'll be mad by the time she figures out I spoiled her lol
lol
tbf at least cracker doesn't sound like that other word or is called "negro" chocolate or something otherwise you would have a completely different discussion
