So a picture of people reading about the murder of the president of America is cool?

A rarely seen perspective on an important point in history perhaps?

It's a photo of a bygone era, where people dressed smartly and read newspapers, all of whom are reading the headline about a bygone man. The end of a generation, so to speak.

Seriously ? a picture can be a cool picture itself, having nothing to do with the subject.

This is a good picture, for example:

My favorite modern NASA photo:

Halls Gap in Australia:

Prince Rupert, BC:

This small boat in the foreground, Kazu Maru, belonged to Japanese fisherman Kazukio Sakamoto. One morning in 1985 Sakamoto-san headed out for a day of fishing
and was never heard from again. A year-and-a-half later Kazu Maru was found adrift off the Queen Charlotte Islands and was towed into Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
Kazu Maru has since been lovingly restored and is displayed in this Shinto shrine in Mariner's Park as a reminder of those lost at sea.

In stark contrast to the small, handbuilt wooden Kazu Maru, just getting enveloped in the fog, is one of the first Norwegian Cruise Lines cruise ships to have stopped
at the newly constructed (in 2004, when the photograph was taken) Cruise Ship Terminal just adjacent to the park.

Some of these are self explanatory, but many need some sort of context. I love the idea of the thread, but just a short one liner to explain the photo would make it a ton more interesting for those who fail to do so.

Serious question: How doctored is this?
Well, since you asked... I traced the photo back to this guy's photo stream on flickr where he says he uses a technique called Magic Cloth.
The magic cloth technique was born out of the need to get the image right in the camera but to still increase the dynamic range of a scene. Under normal circumstances, the top part of a landscape is brighter than the lower half. Even with a mirror lake the difference can be a couple of stops. In order to get the best exposure of both the land and the sky, photographers have traditionally used filters which are darker at the top and clear at the bottom. These are called Graduated Filters (grad) and although they come in different colours, the most popular are Neutral Density (ND - Grad). Neutral density adds no colour to the scene. Aside from different colours, Grad filters come in different strengths - measures in stops. They also come as soft or hard grads.

Original photographer also mentions that he stitched it together from 7 different shots. And the photo was taken on October 12, 2010 in Auster-Skaftafellssysla, IS.

So, the event in the photo is real. The photo itself just happens to be made up of 7 individual shots stitched together.

And here's a couple more photos to balance out this post(Click for full size):
