This could be the result of the R/D budget spikes by NCL that John Davison, formerly of 1up now of GamePro, posited to be WiiHD.

Wow, surprised they went ahead and announced it.

But, yeah... it's true. This was floating around GDC as being confirmed by people working on the hardware.

What I've heard is...

1) Two screens, with virtually no seam between them when open
2) Screens are higher resolution, but exact resolution is unknown
3) Powered by nVidia Tegra
4) Roughly as powerful as a Gamecube, and apparently similar to program for
5) Uses carts - believed to be same size as DS/DSi carts, only with different guts
6) Due out in 2010 in at least one territory

Looking forward to seeing it.
but how it compares to psp?

Glasses-free 3DTVs exist in prototype now. Their main issue is that the 3D only works if you're sitting in certain spots.

When it comes to handhelds, though, they can pretty safely assume that your head will be directly in front of the screen, a foot or so away.

BINGO!

Can't the DSi do that? I don't see why this wouldn't.

Needs to have a GB/GBC/GBA virtual console tbh
This man speaks the truth.

We need a VC on this.

Also, think about all the awesome DSIware descriptions that will get out of this. :lol

Wow they are really milking that Gamecube hardware, releasing it now for the third time but it really sounds interessteing. Didn't expect them to go this far.

Not surprised, non glasses 3D for smaller screens is out for quite some time. Handhelds are predestined for this as usually you look straight at them.

I'm thinking only the top screen is 3D while the bottom retains touch-capability. Don't see how it would work otherwise.

That's what I'm thinking. They can't get rid of the touchscreen if they want to keep backwards compatibility.

I'm so confused and excited.

Things it needs:

WPA support for all games. Don't make me switch to WEP.
Access to the Virtual Console store.
An analogue nub like the PSP.
No friend codes, just NintendoTags.

Indeed, it better have a "Virtual Handheld" service at launch.

Uhh, Gamecube hardware is ATI. This uses Nvidia Tegra. It just has similar horsepower.

The "news" at Kotaku is breathtakingly consistent : no source, two lines.

EDIT : also backward compatibility! Yeah!

I just want three things:

- 3D without glasses :)D)
- Backwards compatible with DS games (nVidia Tegra...)
- Lifetime free wireless EDGE/3G like the Kingle (as Iwata said they were exploring)

System of the forever if it gets all three.

Surprised I'm still the only one bringing up touch tech here.

The idea of no stylis is odd, but then again I dont know if I want a single or resistive touch tech on my games anymore.
