Japanese Sales: 2012 Jul 09 - Jul 15

What happened to Level 5? A couple years ago the were the rising star in the Japan games industry. Now they look like another Square. Except Square had decades of success before falling off.

How much does Level-5 get from international sales though? With Nintendo handling the localization, marketing, publishing, etc for all those games outside of Japan, I can't imagine Level-5 gets a huge cut out of it. They definitely depend more on domestic sales which they publish themselves.

I imagine even if their margin per game sold is low, but the quantity of Layton (and to a lesser degree Inazuma Eleven) sold would make a decent sum of money.

I remember back in the run up to Christmas 2008 here in the U.K, where nobody expected the first Layton to do that well, and as a result shops didn't stock that many copies. Then it became a huge success and it was sold out in my city until the middle of January 2009. Equally, in March this year I went to Paris for the weekend (took advantage of my Dad going for business) and IE2 seemed to be really heavily anticipated in stores with lots of posters/signs/etc (I think this was the Saturday before the game released). This contrasts with back home in Britain, where IE is a far lower profile series. A bit off-topic, but even if Level-5's margin from each US/Europe game sold is low, I still imagine in total they get a good amount of money.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Level 5 should drop everything else and start showing LaytonVSPhoenix. TGS I guess?

Possible. They're going to release Fantasy Life soon too.

Now, something which got unnoticed for some weeks.

23./20. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2011.11.03} (¥4.800) - 4.544 / 1.654.602 (-10%)

2 [N64] Super Mario 64 (Nintendo) - 162.111 / 1.639.921 / 9,89% 23/06/96

Give your warmest welcome to the best selling 3D Mario ever.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I was expecting TT to have decent sales due to it being a semi-follow up to 428 (Jishii being the director).

Maybe it's because L5 doesn't have a good name anymore?

Although it's kinda surprising the PSV and 3DS versions are on par regarding to sales, kinda like Zero Escape: GPD. Maybe the VN/Adventure games will be going multiplatform now on handhelds?

Deserving of it too.

Also, Pokemon 3DS willl be huge. Just watch.

Too bad about the really low time travelers sales. Pretty surprising to see Vita sales edge out 3ds sales here, when you consider the vast difference in the number of people who own each console.

I wonder if the XL release will give the trinity a boost- they seem to be among the games people would pick up when buying the system for the first time.

Yes, but NSMB2.

Also, LL is great for old people who might get Brain Training.

EDIT: Am sure there'll be a boost for those titles though.

Does Japan just not like Level 5 anymore. So many of their recent games have been doing very poorly. Did they do something to turn people off? Just not even advertising their games?

Depends if they have the budget for a higher fidelity release or not. A lot of these games are made by barebones production teams. Also, you are putting way too much value on ishii's name. He's only a relatively known figure in a genre where a game is considered legendary if it passes 100k. Not to mention, a compilation of games by far more well known creators such as Matsuno bombed recently, as did a new game from Platinum.

Just making games that aren't appealing to the public. I don't think Square in their prime could've made Time Travelers work as it is today.

A fully 3D Pokemon might be enough to get people that haven't played the series in years to pick it up as well

I know it would be enough for me to get back into the series... and the last game I played was my trusty old red version on the GB.

I still don't like the merchandise around Pokemon, but I allways maintained that the games were some of the best handheld RPGs around.

It's great to see that this series is still running so incredibly strong. The IP was often seen as completely overused and milked, but damn it still is just as relevant as allways.

Time Travelers was one of the only Level 5 games that actually looked appealing to me. I expect that now Level 5's lineup for next year will consist of 45 Inazuma Eleven and LBX games.

He shouldn't have touched Gundam. Now I won't be happy until he is utterly destroyed. :(

You shall have my sword.

It's okay, you will get your reveagence once Gundam Age comes out and sells 30k combined.

30k? That seems mighty generous. We're talking about a tie in game to a kids show that on multiple occasions got a 0.0 in the kids demographic.

That is a strong message. A remake of a game on Wii that sold 1M can outsell flagship titles of the two best-selling series in history. That underlines how fucking oustanding MH is.

Sorry.

It's only outselling it weekly, it still has a long way to go to pass their LTD (it never will).

honorless

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
Oh wow, Time Travelers. I was expecting shitty sales, but when I saw how high it was in the charts I thought L5 might be in for a minor surprise. For the past couple weeks, 8th and 9th place meant 13-21k, not <10k.

That's that, I suppose!

08./00. [PSV] Time Travelers <ADV> (Level 5) {2012.07.12} (¥5.980) - 9.887 / NEW
09./00. [3DS] Time Travelers <ADV> (Level 5) {2012.07.12} (¥5.980) - 9.761 / NEW

I blame this Vita victory on the 8-4 bump

I'll repeat what I said in the old thread: on Sinobi there's a post which talks about 3DS XL, NSMB2, Oni Tore, and also the other next week releases. If someone could translate them, I'd be really grateful :p

Quoting for others. Google translate shows it discusses the LL and the games you say - but also I think the downloadable system coming with NSMB2?

So yeah if someone can give a better understanding of what it says, that would be really interesting to hear.

I am surprised Vita is managing to stay above 10k. I guess Persona and the recent releases releases may have bumped the base line to...11k lol.

This isn't strong Vita sales as it is everything that is not the 3DS selling like shit.

There isn't really much of interest there. He just talks about how the 3DS XL is coming out, reservations are extremely strong, and he thinks lots of people are looking to upgrade their existing 3DS. He also comments on how direct download games are going on sale next week, and it'll be interesting to see the ratio between package sales and DD sales. For a game like Oni Training he feels it is better suited for DD because it's the sort of game you want to play a little at a time throughout the day, and it benefits from not having to switch carts with whatever else you're playing. Apparently other than major retail chains, the initial shipment stock for Oni Training in package form is going to be really low.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Not surprising, since Nintendo themselves had some Brain Train titles preinstalled on DSi XL when they sold them. I really wonder which game will show up on the eShop next week - would be great if MK7, Revelations, Tri G and so on also would be uploaded as direct-downloads.

Ishii's last game was 428, a visual novel for Wii/PS3/PSP, which sold extremely well. 63k+21k on Wii, 34k on PS3 and 34k on PSP.

By sales rank it did fairly well when it got ported to iOS last year too. But hard to get actual numbers for that.
