Dragon Quest 11 TV commercial "In those days, we were heroes" is super nostalgic

Great commercial. I just wish they showed more of the game and that the mc didn't look so uninteresting. Love the nostalgia angle.

Damn. Right in the feels. I have more nostalgia for Dragon Quest than any other series. Something about this series resonated perfectly with me as a kid and it still does today.

1:06 That kid's family sitting behind him and eating, while he plays! lawl

I can definetly see how that would be nostalgic.

So good. That guy under the covers was me as a child playing games. Right in the feels. I need this game yesterday.

Me too. Turing on the TV and putting the volume on 1 so I wouldn't wake my mom so I could play Streets of Rage or Sonic 2 all night.

I miss being a kid and finding passion for video games for the first time.

Pokemon could pull it off.

They probably could. And they're probably the closest who would try, given the 20th anniversary ads that they did.

Are you kidding? An American tv ad like that for the mainline Mario and Zelda games would utterly destroy me to tears. Unlike DQ I did grew up with all of those.

With the exception of FF3 and 5 skipping the west I could also see Final Fantasy being able to pull it off too.

Would Nintendo make ads like this for Mario or Zelda?

Nintendo had this pretty bad nostalgia commercial for Zelda SS. It tries to hit some of the same notes as this DQ ad.

And Pokemon had this for Sun/Moon which is very similar in theme and style too. And it's a much better ad.

They actually marketed IX quite a bit, commercials were pretty good, I wish they tried marketing Joker better, maybe we would be getting those instead of Fossil Fighters trash

They did market IX quite a bit, and it paid off. Makes you wonder why everything else has been dumped since.

Which are the dragon quest games that are must play?

All of them are great except 1 (although you can beat it in a couple hours it's spam attack the game with only one character), 2 (too cryptic, like the fire seal or the specific ocean tile and the end game cave) and if you really don't like having a party with no personality, 3 and 9 (you make the party members and they say nothing in those games). My personal favorite is 4. I loved the chapters and characters and I find it well paced (its a 25 hours game, it doesn't drag or overstay its welcome)

4 > 5 > 7 > 8 > 6 >3 > 9 > 1 > 2 for me :p

I've seen that kind of dildo before in one of my Japanese porns.

Also, why they playing those old ass consoles? Kids in Japan don't even know what a Nintendo 64 is these days.

I think you missed the whole point of the ad. The parts showing the old consoles are snapshots of the point in time where those games were new.

Dragon Quest is a series that is marketed to everyone, and popular with all ages.

I was being mildly facetious lol. I get the point of the ad. Doesn't really look like the period they are trying to evoke though.

Damn yo ;_;

Oddly enough was looking at DQ4 DS on Amazon and debated ordering it for $22. Still have to finish 7 but teetering on starting it over.

Didn't play DQ at that age but...SNES controllers, drawing monsters and imagining games was a corner stone of my childhood.

Don't get the disrespect for the controller. It made me smile seeing it, even if we mostly just saw the L/R.

Yeah i can imagine it being nostalgic for long time fans even if i can't relate too much personally (I started with DQVIII back in 2006 and since then i only played IV,V,VIII and IX from the main series.)

Can't wait for DQXI hopefully we'll get a western release date announcement soon.

European version begins in 2006 and ends four years later.

Sad but true.At least we got (most of) the spin offs.

Remember though 4 for DS doesn't have party chat. The phone version does. What that means is that on DS, all the characters are silent and on phone they all have fun personalities and they respond to each person in every town.

Really great commercial. I actually just picked up a loose cart of Dragon Quest IV for DS; never played any of these games, and that one seemed a good place to start. I've heard DQ V is the best, though?

But also know that the game never had party chat to begin with so it's OK if you play a version that doesn't have it.

What are you talking about? The clothing, hair, TVs, etc are all appropriate for the respective year that each game was releases.

I'm currently playing through DQV (DS version) and i'd say the game is amazing.DQVIII is still my favourite though.

The ad even has the gigantic line for DQ3

https://youtu.be/AezPcidAyWo

Well actually if you look closely the game they are waiting for in the ad is Dragon Quest VIII. (I wonder if it was raining on that day too?) kinda surprised they didn't have a reference to the III line considering it's probably the most famous of all the video game line waiting events ever in Japan. Still it's nice they got one of those in there.

Just watching the ad again, brings back my own memories of the series over the years. Also was pretty much the same feeling I had at the dragon Quest live spectator last year when the event started with every hero showing up on stage at the same time! Was such a nostalgia trip!

Amazing ad. Soooo reminded me of childhood playing Dragon Warrior on the NES. It's the game that introduced me to RPGs and I've never looked back. Usually I despise how manipulative advertising is, but I can't help but feel the interconnectedness of all of us across our cultures because of this sort of shared experience. :') <3

Never got into Dragon quest but I can relate. I remember beating Garland in Final fantasy, getting to the bridge and thinking "Wow, this game is huge!"

I nver knew about the super nintendo final fantasies (or any other RPG really) until I bought a playstation and my brother bought Final fantasy IX. Imagine my surprise that Final fantasy wasn't just a one off but a huge series! I immediately picked up V and VI for playstation, as well as origins (2 sucks). I bought a DS with my first paycheck just for Final Fantasy III. If only Final fantasy had half the nostalgic dignity DQ has.

Just seeing this ad makes me wish these games got PC ports. I wanna play these games without emulating and my eyesight is not so great, so I can't hang in there on the relatively tiny DS/3DS screens. I bought them anyway to support the western releases, but I never get very far because playing them makes me uncomfortable. It stings a bit to think that the last DQ game I really got to sink my teeth into was DQVIII, I really wanna play em :(
