Trump on trade: "The Germans are bad, very bad"

Fathers Day is ending in germany, or as we call it:"´Let's pull wagons packed with beer and schnapps across the countryside and drink until we pass out day." But I'm actually not supposed to tell this secret to strangers, because the bavarians want to sell their oktoberfest as the most important booze fest to tourists.

In other words: Everybody is laughing at the orange monkey anyway, at least today. Prost

Sounds like a sensational tradition.

Guys the world has been laughing at America long before January 20th, 2017.

They're all just far more comfortable doing it to our face now.
Obama did rebuilt their reputation to some extend and create goodwill around the world again after Bush. And Trump has managed to undo all that within the year.

The decline of the American industry is not just a result of other countries being cheaper (while doing all the shaddy things) but just the plain fact that American goods aren't competitive at all.

German traditions are good, very good. You know, some would even say we have the best traditions. Like our trade deals, they are the best. The best trade deals are made in germany. Also walls, we have great walls. We even had one for several years. It was great!

Merkel should just offer Trump a few favorable deals on Trump Hotels in Germany. Then I'm sure he will change his tune and completely sell out the US and his claimed principles.

Trump doesn't understand the US economy at all. The US is the creator of the dollar, they give away paper in exchange for valuable goods. The US is winning as long as trade is done in dollars.

He says exactly the same as Macron but uses other words because of his limited vocabulary.

Yeah Germany is actually quite böse when it comes to propping up their car industry (the whole VW emission swindle after all was helped by Germany pressuring the EU countries to have lax standards, and it's just one of very many cases where Germany has come off less than saintly), but it usually just impacts the rest of the EU. The American cars losing out because they look great but drive like crap is on them.

Even Bush W. didnt have the Europeans laughing in the palms of their hands. Trump is a disaster for America's international image and credibility.
Putin must be grinning ear to ear right now.

President Trump on Thursday attended a meeting with European Union leaders in Brussels, where he apparently decided to air his grievances over Germany's trade surplus with the U.S. "The Germans are evil, very evil," Trump reportedly complained in the meeting, attendees told German newspaper Der Spiegel. "Look at the millions of cars they sell in the U.S. We'll stop that."

Germany isn't selling those cars. That is VW, Mercedes and BMW. Multicorps that produce worldwide.

"Look at the million Apple products, MS software, Facebook accounts and google shizzle.
We'll stop that! Gonna have our own KrautBook! Those evil, evil Americans!"

II mean if we are mesuring how evil a country is from the quantity of vehicles, then Japan must be the DEVIL!

After Trump visited Abe and Merkel - both made a statement together how important and crucial free trade is.

As expected of evil car producing countries.

Everyone knows about this imbalance, even Schäuble sees it as a problem.

The problem is how Trump still thinks he can make a trade deal with Germany alone. Or can force any EU country to do that.

I've been saying this since way before he was elected...he doesn't understand the legal framework of global trade, you could tell from many of his speeches. And apparently he still doesn't want to learn. This whole trip really just told everyone one thing: get used to the Trump we've seen for a few months now, make backup plans for everything he could detroy and move on.

Same with China and Germany.

Just me, but I would translate his childish use of 'bad' as "schlimm" in German.
Not that it changes the fact that the leader of the country that's profiting the most from free trade has zero understanding of even basic concepts of trading. The US has truly elected a toddler. Not a great argument for democracy there.

WW3 will be fought against Germany for daring to sell Volkswagens, Benzes, BMWs, Audis, and whatever else make of car I'm forgetting in the US. Watch out, Japan. You too, Korea. And we see hiding in the corner, Italy. You're all going down. Long live General Motors!

For all of Trump's foolishness, there's actually been little retort from other countries as yet. It'll be interesting to see if and when USA start to publicly lose deals/information/influence and how it's reported.

This is a different matter as France is part of the EU. Yes it is a problem for the EU that Germany has such a big trade surplus. But that is not in general the fault of Germany.
Of course Germany wants their companies to do well. And you can't blame the state that there are companies that are succesfull.

Germany could divert more many to the EU to help the other countries because of the big trade surplus (I think even Schäuble suggested this). But this is an EU thing - the US is not part of the EU (and Trump doesn't want a trade deal which could regulate this).

This claim is ridiculous because US companies are dominating the digital world and those companies are not big employers like car manufacturers - they often don't pay taxes and run their whole EU biz via low tax countries and use every trick to not pay taxes at all. FB makes millions in germany alone - but they don't have a lot of employes here.

But in the end it is a free market. You can't blame the US for having companies that provide better digital services.

The guy at the far end just looking over like, "Is this shit for real?" Not sure who he is, don't recognize him, but I know that feeling

I would imagine that rather than get mad, other countries are scrambling to come up with ways to take advantage of an incompetent America.

It would really be a shame if all those Trump voters who work at the BMW plant in South Carolina and the Volkswagen plant in Tennessee lost their jobs as the result of a trade war, wouldn't it?

A crying shame indeed!

Lesson for multinationals; build your plants in swing states.

Trump is literally the laughing stock of the world. If anything, his attacks on EU and Germany makes Europe more united.

Right behind Macron you can find the Spanish Prime Minister:

You don't have the only laughing stock out there. Not the first time he's all weird like that. And don't talk to him in English, he'll be extremely confused.
