Can also still confirm Switch does not exist in Osaka. I dropped by Joshin and Yodobashi today and still nothing.

Also saw a single report from a small retailer online saying they aren't confident if they will have enough copies of ARMS on launch day. This probably won't be a major thing though.

Square Enix has announced what is quite possibly the highest production value card game I have ever seen: Dragon Quest Rivals for mobile.

It will be interesting to see how it does, as Shadowverse (CyGames' card game) is often a top 10 monthly performer, as are Dragon Quest games.

Combined, both versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have sold 588 624 units at retail. 600k next week! To reach 1m before the end of the year, it needs 411 376 units during the next 32 weeks, and that's 12 855 units per week. Definitely doable, though not quite guaranteed yet (too early to say for sure, but at least 1m LTD seems guaranteed).

Bump when Switch gets bigger shipments will be pretty interesting.

Lets say that Switch follows a similar path to 3DS around the holidays and Splatoon 2 launch and finishes the year at around 4 - 4.5 million units sold. Currently it's sitting at 875K with a >50% attach rate for Zelda BotW.
That leaves 3125K potential owners if Switch sells 4 million in Japan by the end of the year. Out of these potential 3 million owners you'd need 1 in 8 to buy Zelda in order for the combined Switch/Wii U total to be over 1 million. I personally think Zelda will sell better than that.

In any case 1 million by the end of the year for both versions is pretty much guaranteed.

Strange thing is that supply is actually dropping compared to last month, though. Wonder what the reason for that could be.

They have to start making Splatoon 2 bundles some time, and those have Switches in them, so instead of shipping them they are storing some in a warehouse until Splatoon 2's launch.

Yeah, that would make sense. Here's hoping they can get the increased production kicking in very soon so we can get decent weekly numbers and good storage for big releases :)

I can't believe I forgot about that. lol

So this would likely affect Japan but not other regions since they're not getting the same bundles.

PS4 and PS3 streams crossing once again?

Hearthstone, Shadowverse, Yugioh duel links, Pokémon Trading Card Game and now this.

It's going to be harder to compete with mobile card games especially with mobile game revenue growth slowing down.

Hearthstone itself is not very successful in Japan, which I imagine is why they're going after this.

They likely feel there's an opportunity to try and bully Shadowverse with a bigger budget and a much stronger brand.

The Switch has been in stock on Amazon Japan for more than a week; the meme is over.

Are you referring to those scalped units selling for 42k Yen?

More generally, I love how there are some trolls entering the thread here telling people who follow the threads regularly and read all the reports that they are delusional for saying there are supply constraints. Quite funny and sad at the same time.

Just tried to search from local website ( Argos and others ). Still not in stock, so at least there are still supply constaint in the UK.

It'll still take a few more weeks for that at least, as the gap is 80k overall, and the week by week gap 10-15k for the last two weeks. By the point the PS3 bumps to 50k for a brief bit it might happen, if nothing else similarly drives the PS4.

Probably not the best place to ask but. Did that PvZ card game fail to make a splash in any market then? Not really been on the radar after launch as far as I can see.

No, the only majorly successful mobile card games (in the Magic The Gathering sense) are Hearthstone, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Shadowverse.

Plants Vs. Zombies: Heroes sits down in the 400s in the US market.

Now, there are other games that take cards/deck building in a different direction and are hugely successful. For example, Clash Royale is the #3 top grossing game on earth, and has you build a deck of cards to play a competitive strategy game.

Back in the day, games that used cards as stand-ins for RPG sprites/character models were quite successful, though I wouldn't consider those "card games" in any meaningful sense.

However, for games in the Magic The Gathering conceptual space, those three are the only meaningful performers. I imagine Magic The Gathering and the Pokemon trading card game will suck up most remaining oxygen in the room.

That said, I think the Dragon Quest game has a real shot in Japan since Hearthstone and Magic are unlikely to be majorly successful there for the foreseeable future, and I'm not convinced Shadowverse has an unassailable position.

I guess GWENT has some questions around it, but like, I don't think we need to even begin talking about that in the context of the Japanese market.

Tbh, I think you are underestimating the brand value of Cygames Rage of Bahamut/Shadowverse/Granblue multiverse.

Thanks for the insight! Have a few comments on this but won't derail the thread since it's not really relevant to the JPN market as far as I can see.

I do wonder why Hearthstone isn't even more successful though in Japan. As far as I hear from Yugioh playing friends, their online and mobile implantation isn't the best either (speaking for before the launch of Duel Links at least). So I would have expected the polish of Hearthstone to attract people. Maybe it's just the difference in brand power between Yugioh and Warcraft I guess.

I'd like to too, given that I'm playing a fair number of Cygames, but I'm more of the opinion these days that famous brands that come late to the party can make a sizable dent on new IP that haven't been around for too long. Bamco are using longstanding IP like Dragon Ball to go up the revenue list for example, Aniplex are trying to replicate Fate's success, and even Nintendo IP like Pokemon and to a lesser extent Fire Emblem.

Probably except Monster Strike, that looks unassailable.

for a fairly weak IP like fire emblem, gotta say I'm impressed that it keep hanging in the top 10 grossing mobile games

Legendary fight to the death. Maybe Nier will take the lead again in 2 weeks.

I think Shadowverse's and Hearthstone's greatest enemy will be themselves, if the players don't find the meta fun they'll abandon it. I haven't played Shadowverse since the last expansion, but i heard the meta wasn't fun at all.

And IIRC, what made Shadowverse strong off the bat, was that Hearthstone was having "pirate problems" and the strong giveaways by Shadowverse.

Granblue is going strong as ever, IIRC, gotta get KMR multiple boats.

I wonder if Switch's going to stay at 25k until the release of ARMS or if they manage to go back to their 40k per week again.

This seems to be a thing in many Nintendo threads these days. Basically people coming into the topic, leaving a single negative comment, and you never see them again. Not sure if it just seems that way for me though but it ruins so many topics lately. Luckily there are mods active in the Media Create thread to prevent these things from getting out of hand. (Sorry for off topic.)

This website tracksmajor online stores Switch stock situation. On everyone is sold out (since forever). They update everyday:

https://gamewith.jp/gamedb/article/show/43620?from=ios

Switch is sold by lottery on bigger stores in Japan.

The Splatoon 2 bundle is booked by lottery on some stores:

Thank you for the links. I really appreciate it.

I view there are being two mobile markets in Japan.

There's the younger people who grew up with mobile, and the 30-50 year olds who go all in on their favorite legacy brands.

Like Yu-Gi-Oh was a gigantic hit when it came out, and it focused entirely on the original card sets and characters for the audience that played the game growing up, but fell out of touch with the franchise later.

That's where I think a Dragon Quest card game would really appeal more than a Shadowverse card game, assuming competent game design.

Thanks for the insight! Have a few comments on this but won't derail the thread since it's not really relevant to the JPN market as far as I can see.

While Activision Blizzard was very slow on the ramp up of the game, I feel the biggest issue is that the IP just doesn't have the same kind of relevance that company like CyGames can must. This is also just true of the local publishing strength of Activision Blizzard in Japan.

Granblue in particular goes for that old FF 1-6 fanbase hard, and I think mobile's general target is already the older fanbase in general. I can see Dragon Quest making a dent, but if its going to make a dent, it would because Shadowverse fucked up imho.

While Activision Blizzard was very slow on the ramp up of the game, I feel the biggest issue is that the IP just doesn't have the same kind of relevance that company like CyGames can must. This is also just true of the local publishing strength of Activision Blizzard in Japan.

To be blunt, I think Hearthstone's art is pretty ugly, and I think that's what is hurting it the most in Japan. Aesthetics matter alot.
