France-GAF |OT| Existentialism, cheese, wine and je ne sais quoi

for those who live in France, I have heard from many that tanned individuals like myself get a lot of attention...almost seen as exotic. Is this true?

What kind of a tan ? Depends on the tan, really.

(and no - it's not true)

What kind of tan are we talking about ? Are you orange ? ^^ (*edit - too slow)
There is a big ethnic diversity in France, at least in big cities, so I don't think you would get special attention. Or maybe not the right kind of attention, since we have our share or racists too...

Surely not seen as exotic. Except maybe in the deep countryside, but even then I doubt it.

That said, France is probably not the best country when it comes to not noticing ethnicity...

I'm glad we've stopped talking about her. :p
Honestly, the day she was released, all the news were about her, while we had just entered the war in Mali...

is she seen as guilty over there? 'cause the evidence here pretty much suggests that she was indeed guilty...

what does France-GAF think of Florence Cassez?

Oh man when she was freed it was all over the news.

Seems like public opinion was glad she was released, though I can't bring myself to care about it a lot.

She's seen as being more or less innocent and being condemned on trumped up charges/staged arrest.

lol, that's what I thought... but really, dating a kidnapper and having been recognized by children as being involved in the kidnappings don't make her seem very innocent to me.

But anyways, I don't care much about it either, it just seems like a case where the Mexican government was pressured by France to let her free because she is a good-looking woman when the evidence shows otherwise.

Good for her to be free (I don't think she's 100% clean but neither am I and who am I to judge) but all people still held hostage around the world didn't get 1% of the attention she did. Kinda weird, before we had Ingrid Betancourt hostage with the FARC and we did huge music events and shit.

For the question about tanning : depends on the region, some regions are heavily populated with people with ex-colonial origins so skin colour is not perceived by the masses, but where I live ( = "groland-like" countryside) some people have never seen tanned people and can react quite aggressively (not upfront, but they WILL complain, beginning their sentences with "I'm not racist, but" and shit like that).

She's a criminal at worst, naïve at best, and got way more attention than she deserved. The Mexican court did the right thing in freeing her, for the legal procedure was botched, but that doesn't make her an innocent.

Also, Sarkozy tried to pressure Mexican justice into releasing her, which I find scandalous.

Also, another question to France-GAF, is there something that "attracts" young French people to Mexico? Every year, tons of university exchange students from France come here, and I've always wondered why

Spring break maybe? I don't know, I find your country scary: first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Mexico are the drug cartels (and immigration problems with the USA).

Well, she's young, good looking and with criminal charges pressed. It was bound to get tons of attention.

haha, no I'm talking about whole semesters here, for studying, in cities where there's not even beaches. And I also think that that's the impression foreigners get from here so I was curious why so many come here.

edit: double post ffs

Sarkozy tried to liberate her with little success - all we got was a diplomatic crisis and the cancellation of cultural partnerships. I don't think Hollande cared enough to pressure anyone.

I don't see her as "innocent", but if Mexican justice let her go, then it's good for me since it means they don't have enough to keep her behind bars - and from what I've read, it was on a dramatic turn of events. Then again I don't live in a country where drug cartels kidnapping, murdering and torturing people is seen as a major issue.

Fun fact : friends of mine are going to Mexico weeks from now.

I love mexican culture myself, and I would probably go there if I wasn't a lazy slob with little tolerance towards heat.

One of my colleagues is fond of Mexico, speaks perfect Spanish and the boss for whom she's worked for a year was Mexican, but she's actually Russian, not French.

I had no idea exchange students flooded Mexico... but for me it was :

- Teotihuacán
- Monte Albán
- the sheer size and endless cityscape of DF
- Chichen Itza
- Ek Balam
- Tulum beaches
- The unfathomable and awesome history
- Real Guacamole
- Michelada Cubana !

Well actually I went because a friend got married there but I'll come back for the above.

Edit : Cassez makes for a good story. Is dodgy as hell, most likely she at least was aware / let bad things happen (we'll probably never know for sure). But her arrest being staged and other irregularities made the outcome pretty understandable. Looking forward to hearing about the conclusions of Vallarta's trial...

Drugs ;)

8 of my friends went to central/south america not for studies but for huge partying because something something caliente something something salsa.

They were disappointed.

More serious : the southern half (third?) of France is usually way more fluent in Spanish than in English and they tend to get way more attracted to latin countries.
(Florent Pagny !)
Maybe there are a lot of exchanges between universities.

I remember we even had this french Computer Science student in one of my classes who liked spending tons of time in the campus' garden while the sun was hot as heck, lol.

Nice ? Oooooh yeah. The best place on Earth if you are old and racist as fuck : former mayor was JM Le Pen's best friend, the current one is Sarkozy's BF.

Actually, if you are racist as fuck you don't want to live in Nice because you'll want to murder someone very quickly if you are not tolerant.

I know some people who work at Ankama, I've heard some not great things for the MMO but damn the people who made Wakfu are awesome!
Wiki told me that there's a feature film in the making, to be released no to far in the future.

I've only played the MMO for an hour or so. Was interesting, but hard to get my head around. I really only care about the cartoon series, which is goddamn phenominal!

I too have heard about the feature film. I think I also read somewhere that season 3 will be aired after the movie is released in 2014. I hope it's sooner than that.

Wakfu and movies like Lascars are what made me want to start learning French.

With the people posting about moving to France a couple of pages ago, I'm wondering if I should also consider it. I'm absolutely in love with France, and felt like I was home on both occasions when I was there. I was reading up how to acquire residency/citizenship, and it seems that you only need to stay a minimum of two years there if you studied at a French University.

Has anyone tried to be a naturalized French citizen?

Also since everyone was throwing Football teams from the last few pages, ALLEZ LE LOSC!!!

This is exactly what I expected to happen when I moved here! But it's been 8 years and it hasn't happened. I just know enough to place an order when I get a coffee at a , or go shopping at the market, as long as they don't ask any unexpected questions.

I work for a company filled with hundreds of expats, from all over Europe. We all share similar interests as well, which is how we end up at this company to begin with, so most of us tend to hang out with colleagues even outside of work. And even the friends I made outside of that circle are mostly German or English speaking expats.

I'm just not "among the French" enough to just pick it up from hearing it.

Ah if you don't mingle with us it's hard to pick up too, true. It's too bad though but there's only so many hours in a day to do everything we need...
I'd say start with movies with subtitles and go from there you're bound to pick up some stuffs!

She could have died in a smelly cell for all I cared, the collective shitting on Mexican courts by the media was disgraceful.

The MMO was full of great ideas but it's a bit of a mess to get into, I hate how everything is so slow though.
It's all turn based to boot...
Lascars was so freaking awesome, I thought I'd hate it when I began to watch it but I really liked it!
We've got plenty of animation films you should see, they're awesome

We've also got our own AVGN : joueur du grenier, who is all kinds of awesome really.
Last one was on Adams Family, really funny.

Any predictions?

It'll pass. Socialists got majority. It might be a bit problematic in the senate, but as it is also Socialist in majority.

It's just as not complete as promised, a second bill about Family will be introduced in the spring, and this one will be very contested.

God, Mariton's speech was so awful. The bill will not kill family. It's going to change nothing for straight people. It's just about equality.

Isn't the senate full of old people though?

Even if it is, it doesn't really matter. If they vote against the bill, the AN votes again, sends it to the senate one last time, and if they disagree the last vote and decision is up to the Assembly.

Mariton is insufferable. "We are about to change an article from the Code Civil, an article inspired from the First Commandment itself: 'A child shall honor his father and his mother'!" Dude, it's the Fourth... If you absolutely have to pose as a devout christian to pander to your conservative base, do it right.
