It was pretty funny when the two directors spoke about the movie before the showing, and said they just finished it a day before. I wonder how much it cost to make, since it seemed to have a pretty high production value for an indie film, especially a local one.

About to watch The Thing (2011). Saw the 1982 version the other day and loved it! I guess since this serves as the prequel I should go ahead and see it, even if it isn't too well received.

It started out fine, but went down after that. I wish they had used practical effects instead of CGI, like the 1982 film did.
I watched some youtube thing the other day where some guy compared the practical vs the cgi and the cgi hasn't held up well at all...which I've only watched the prequel the one time.
As far as the actual story the prequel blows. They changed aspects of the story that were physically shown in the Carpenter movie, like the dig site stuff. I was hoping for better but all we got was a lesser copy of the original sadly. I still want to revisit it some day though.
Watched The Devil's Candy a week or so ago after having really enjoyed The Loved Ones. I'll say I liked The Loved Ones exponentially more but fuuuck was this movie intense. Some really cool visuals and themes but it sort of felt like they didn't do enough with the setup. The painting aspect was great though.
The body horror of The Thing doesn't work as well with the CGI as it did with the practical effects. Everything feels cleaner. On top of that, they sort of made the creature kinda stupid for the sake of plot convenience.

Just watched Rings. Mediocre, but better than I expected. Far better than Sadako vs Kyako, but that's a super low bar. Vincent d'Onofrio is really the only good thing about the movie - nice surprise, because I didn't know he was in it. Everything else is bland.
Edit: I also watched The Void. Loved it. It's nothing profound, but it's a wonderful showcase for some sweet effects, and I enjoyed the nebulous nature of the rules governing the movie's reality.

They actually did start out with practical effects, but then someone made the terrible decision to paint over all of them with CGI. You can see bits of the effects on YouTube, I believe.
I'm actually okay-ish with the creature starting out a little stupid. It's been frozen for thousands of years, and may not have been in the best shape to start with. (Its ship crashed, remember.) Also, it's encountering an unfamiliar species, and maybe even a completely unfamiliar type of biology. (For a great take on this, check out Peter Watts' short story "The Things".)
Well the thing is (no pun intended), it clearly had a plan when it got into that helicopter. It could've easily waited until the helicopter reached its destination instead of blowing its cover and trying to assimilate people before the helicopter left the base. The "wrong ear" thing is an acceptable amount of stupid but not that.
Congrats! I would absolutely be there if I lived in LA. Be sure to update us on screenings, VOD releases, etc!
Edit: Just read the article. I was excited to see it purely because 1) it's a horror movie, and 2) GAF solidarity; but it sounds fucking incredible. Exactly my kind of thing.

Tell me one of you has seen Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl. Been Googling like a mad thing trying to find interpretations, but I'm just coming up with spoiler free reviews. I feel like I missed something, or failed to connect some dots.

Yeah it's a bit out there. I got nothing. I can either craft some sort of ghost explanation or a mental illness explanation. Nothing really jumped out to me though...
Exactly - either it's a whole movie revelation, or a reality shifting event that I'm not understanding. The photograph is desperately trying to tell us something for the entire duration of the credits, but I have no clue what.
I'm relieved I'm not the only one who couldn't figure it out. More opinions needed!

I had that sense too, but then it seemed too simple
given the weird montage, and too implausible (like, why would that happen!? That's way harsh for being desperate for company and a bit sticky fingered! She was more naïve than malicious.)
I kind of ended up thinking
that she had been an old woman all along, experiencing the events of the movie vicariously through the girl who cared for her? That seems like a huge stretch though. I also wondered if Beth was supposed to be more than just a cool chick too. Or if either of the girls was living out events in Dora's life...Then there's stuff like the Bible passage and the cat. Was the cat always roadkill? Or did it become roadkill due to ghost? IDFK.
I don't want the movie to be vague. I want to be missing something obvious, because aside from the total confusion at the end, I really enjoyed it. Cinematography is gorgeous, and the performances were consistently strong.

I just watched the movie earlier and this is pretty much what I think happened.
Adele mentioned several times that her mom was going to name her daughter Dora, so I assumed that Adele became the shut-in and her much younger sister, named Dora, became the one responsible for taking care of her - maybe she suffered a psychotic break after what happened with her aunt? idk. Not sure what to make of the photo, though.

Yea it had an awesome atmosphere but the story was just too lacking. I mean a bit of ambiguity is fine so long as you get a nice story but this seems like there's more backstory that we weren't given. Like Adele is lonely...ok. Her mom didn't seem too bad and dad/step-dad was a bit pervy but that part was so short then...she's at aunties house.
I think much of the film was real. As in not a dream or a past life. I think Beth definitely moved her in a different direction than she thought about going, ie stealing and cheating. I also think the

I couldn't not mention it. I need to know WTF happened! Shudder is exceptionally well curated. You really can't go wrong with anything on there (but watch Lovely Molly because I love it). I didn't like Sadako vs Kyako; otherwise just dig in.

For those who don't know, the movie is about shlubby private eye Harold Angel (Mickey Rourke), who takes on the job of the enigmatic Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro). Angels mission is to search for a missing corner who owes Cyphre an unpaid debt. Though the job seems simple, Angel's journey will find him on a trail of blood and the occult.
Now just from the names of the characters, first thought one might think is how corny and on the nose it seems. However, the film is truly unsettling, dark and tense. Honestly, it marks into my top 10-15 horror films and this 2nd viewing has made me wishlist the book it was based on called Faling Angel

Hounds of Love is a tense ride from start to finish. The sense of dread the audience has for the victim the entire time reminded me most of watching Texas Chainsaw for the first time. It is never gratuitous in its content either, which I appreciated. Yeah you know awful shit happens, but generally it's left to the audience's imagination, instead of being straight up torture porn. Good performances by everyone, ending was a bit on the nose, but overall it's great, definitely would recommend. The only real questionable choice I had was why they stuck it in the 80s, because it would have worked at any time honestly, and I kept forgetting and wondering if Australia was full of old cars driving around. Small nitpick though.

I just watched We Are Still Here. It was pretty good. The title freaked me out more than anything else but I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I totally thought

Edit: I'm about ten minutes in and Darlng is seriously reminding me of Repulsion. A fantastic movie with Catherine Deneuve.

ive been interested in the alien series for a long time and ive seen all of the movies except for the 3rd one. I finally decided to buy all of the main alien movies. So in amazon they have two versions the Alien Anthology version and the Alien Quadriology version. I kind of wanted to see the extended versions of these films but i would like to have a copy of the original theatrical release. For example, I would like to see both versions of Alien 3 since i hear the directors cut is better and i would like to compare the two versions. So tell me GAF whats the difference between these two versions and which one is better. Oh and i would like to get them on blu ray if possible. Thanks.
