Put my Analogue NT up for sale on the buy sell thread and thought it was a waste to not cross post some of my 3x (720p) pictures from my 4K and share them on here.

MM had to blink at the right time.

may i ask why you want to sell it ?

Hi all, send me a PM if you'd like to be invited to the retro discord server, a bunch of us are on there. This thread was amazing, and I'd love for y'all to come over. Thanks for making this a 240p haven while it lasted.

I'll get back to everyone who pm's as soon as possible.

Guys, if I do not respond to your PM's it's due to the new 10 minute time limit rules. I will get you today or tomorrow at the latest. Keep checking back for your pms and don't get banned yet.

Picked up my first ever CRT the other week, a Phillips 29PT3323. Was previously using my retro consoles with a Framemeister on my Panasonic 1080p plasma . I figured I may as well for the price... cost just $5 AUD! Then another $40 AUD for the stand.

Took a lazy few pics of it running with my phone yesterday (PS1 via S-Video).

Might sound like a silly question, but does anyone run one of these converter/upscalers to apply scanlines on their modern consoles?

Does it work?

Be curious to see someone running a switch in dock mode through an converter...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!56K WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NOT FOR DIAL-UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next gen console screenshots?

The last hope for image quality?

Psh. Don't make me laugh.

This thread is all about posting pics of games with scanlines.

Brought on due to demand from the regulars over at the thread called "Upscalers, CRT's, PVM's & RGB: Retro gaming done right!", photos of actual CRTs in action, as well as screengrabs from upscalers and emulators are all welcome here. Here are some guideline rules so we can maximize our fun. If possible please:

1. Label all screenshots with the game's title (unless a title screen is visible or the game's identity is otherwise obvious),

2. Label whether you are posting a pic from a real CRT, upscaling device, or emulator.

3. If it's from an upscaling device, please provide the name of device. If it's from an emulator, provide the name of the emulator and filter/setting applied.

Before this OP was edited, one user asked a very great question: Why scanlines? Is it just about nostalgia?

Well no. Many people, myself included, believe that artists drew their pixel and polygonal artwork in 240p with scanlines in mind and never intended for it to look jagged via raw unfiltered upscaling on non-CRT technology. If you think about it, this makes sense because fixed-pixel HDTVs (e.g. plasma and LCD screens) didn't become standard tech for consumer use in the living room until well after the 90s, far after these games were being enjoyed by their original fanbases when they were first released. The scanlines add dimension and texture to the image that was intended to be there and which goes away when simply viewing raw pixel art in HD without them. If you'll take a look at the following, you'll notice that the pixel art looks unnaturally jaggy in HD, and looks smooth when rendered with the scanlines of a proper 240p image:

Scanline porn posted by PSA:

Can you post again your images about "Super Contra before and after HLSL"? They seem to were removed and I remember they showed a crucial difference in colors when using scanlines on 2D games from that era.

Why is this thread so forgotten? :p It was an inspiration for me and pushed me into tv rgb retro gaming. I even have some photos of my progression since then:

Old 13" sharp I have since forever. Very nice but a little small:

Then found a panasonic 20 incher:

Then bought another panasonic, pretty much the same tv but with a black case and small footpring:

Then I found some JVC´s NIB for cheap, and that´s what I´m using now:

Hey all, sorry for the tiny necromancy but this thread is still relevant.
I'm working on my game (pixel art rpg shmup) and recently added a CRT mode (sadly, i haven't managed to add a good blur to it).
I'd like your opinion on it.
Here are a few screenshots with and without the filter and with and without the different scaling options (hardware, software and hardware with the CRT filter).
The hardware scaling adds a bit of blur, the software one is more crisp but not pixel perfect (it's close but it shows on some elements).

So if you could give me your opinion on the different options, it would help me. I'm hoping everyone finds a setting that they like but always looking at ways to improve the game :)

Thanks for your time !
Your internal resolution seems to be 256 lines.

First picture is perfectly clean of course, integer scaling x3 it seems.
Second picture has even scanlines so that's good and logical, they are a bit strong, you could maybe offer one more filter ? One that darkens only one line out of three.
Third picture adds blur of course, that's unavoidable.
Fourth one makes "uneven" lines and columns which is unavoidable as well.
Finally the fifth screen is an option I would not offer, as it produces uneven scanlines which are quite ugly and that I never use in games. But that's only my personal opinion of course.

For 1080p display, I would offer a x4 integer scaling with a smooth scanline filter based on 3 lines out of the 4 that makes the original pixel (light grey, normal color, light grey, dark grey).

Overall, I think that you are making the right efforts here.

Thanks for your reply...

The game actually is in 768p base res but with the pixels being 3pixels wide.
(so yeah basically everything is drawn in x3).
This way the scaling is less cpu intensive...however, to scale it in 1080 means it can't just be 1 time more like 4x, so i'vd come up with the 2 imperfect solutions of software/hardware scaling.
It should also work on different resolutions though, haven't tested above 1080 as i don't havd a 4k screen but that means the solution needs to work with a wide array of resolutions and also on the least possible computing power.
I already have way too much overhead due to the system i use (sadly i didn't start this project in c++ as it started as something completely different).

Not sure what you mean by uneven scanlines, though?

I wish i could do something like the Sonic Mania filter, it's pretty much perfect 😋

Holy thread resurrection Batman. Just ordered an OSSC as space has become at a premium in the games room and the BVM has left the building. Looking forward to posting some shots of various systems. Does GAF have a decent more general retro gaming display options type thread?

You should start a new one. The original user who created this had a mental breakdown.

Oh, man. I bought this gigantic Sony CRT widescreen, 720p/1080i set about a decade ago. It was AMAZING for the 6 months that it worked. It was my PS3/Xbox 360 daily driver / 2nd PC monitor for the time. I miss that set. :-(

Getting rid of it was a nightmare as I had to take it down stairs.

I was just searching for this thread yesterday. I couldn't remember the title.

I recently bought an N64 and GameCube to go along with my PS1 and PS2. I played through Mario 64, got a nice bit into Ocarina of Time before making the mistake of testing Paper Mario. Paper Mario has had me hooked all week. What a fantastic game.

My plan is to start Prince of Persia Sands of Time tomorrow now that I found my s-video cable. I played it on PS2 back at release, but supposedly the GC version is superior.

Image above is my JVC 27D500, using composite. Somehow this TV managed to get near perfect gamma and greyscale when I calibrated using my colorimeter. It's a full curved tube, yet clearly beats my 24" flat Toshiba, and the numerous Sony Wegas I have and have had. I also have a curved 32" Trinitron in the basement that is archived for the future.
