Australian woman calls 911, shot dead by responding police in Minneapolis

Well, he murdered the defenseless woman. Him getting away with it would be impossible... right?
The only way would if the other cop comes out as a witness against him. If not, then he might lose his job, but that's all the justice I would expect then.

This story only makes sense if it was an accidental discharge. Otherwise it is bizarre that the pig would shoot through the door instead of the open window where his intended target was standing a few feet away.

911 is a last resort.

Police are no longer peace keepers

Yup.

Unless you are already sure someone is going to die or you see and are 100% sure that you see some wanted terrorist/serial rapist/serial killer calling the police is stupid as fuck.

Lose his job and keep his pension + get a pay raise at a department two towns over.

This is what i thought too. Because it makes no sense for someone to shoot through the door like this, possibly harming his partner as well. That's the kind of thing you see in movies, who does that in the real world?

It's either that, or the shooting cop is bat-shit crazy and needs to be in an asylum or something.

Maybe all your cop proceduarls have an effect on society.

All these good looking, honest, hardworking cops, getting their guy in 45 mins (with ads).

Such bullshit. I feel like there's nothing left to be said when it comes to police killing people. It's so routine in America, it's disgusting.
It's definitely not routine. It's definitely terrible that it happens though.

honestly unless there's actual evidence that the camera had a legit malfunction, whenever a cop does something like this they should be arrested and put in protected custody, only to be released after a trial (and backpay if he/she is not guilty).

But I bet they'd even find ways around that. And there's also the fact that a trial would probably just end in the officer's acquittal anyway.
When we were on duty, we had to do an equipment check before going on patrol. Checked our cars for contraband, checked in-car and body cams, flashlights, etc. If anything wasn't working properly, it was documented on our check list sheets that we turn in after each shift. The supervisor (me) would be notified, and we also have to notify dispatch via radio call that "X" is not operational. That way it's logged on recorded radio transmission.

We had spare things to use that we can deal with at the beginning of the shift, so that's usually taken care of beforehand. However, sometimes things just don't work. Car cams, body cams, list goes on, can stop working mid-shift. We used our body cams when there was ANY interaction with someone while on duty. I still have mine and I retired just over five years ago.

That being said, that isn't posted to be any indication of what this situation is. Just a different perspective I guess. Hopefully there will be answers for what the heck happened, and why.

There's seriously something wrong with the training cops in the US get. I'm not sure how even other cops could defend this considering how freaking dangerous it must be to shoot past your partner.

Shoot first, cover up later, rely on a populace who is full of hero worship and would never convictions a cop, and if things looks dicey hire for the defense that asshole who basically proves every shooting is justified based on tests run hundreds of times until he can record his desired outcome. And if someone questions you, threaten them with bogus but potentially irreparable damages (also do the same if called to an incident involving one of your own off duty or someone you know).

At least that is how it seems. I'm sure there are good cops, but its too bad they don't try to correct all this or that no one actions upon anything to fix this because of fear of retaliation. Here is a simple one: how about the prosecutor bring charges against a cop can't be the same prosecutor who works with the cop for all their cases?

You're not wrong with your first paragraph. Your prosecutor question wouldn't matter as the police can just stop working with the entire prosecutors' office.

From Minneapolis. Currently live in the suburbs. My wife and I are thinking of moving to this area of the city. We were looking at a home a few blocks from this shooting a week ago. It's definitely going to give us pause.

Still wouldn't make sense for the cop to pull out his gun while in the car and have it pointed at the victim. So many things with an accidental discharge just doesn't make sense.

Just read the update. Straight up murder. I can't wait to see how the cops and their supporters spin this one.

Minneapolis is my city and this has me shook.

The only thing I can think right now is because this was a white woman in an upscale neighborhood that something might actually be done about it.

You mean Mineapolice. What's up with all the paranoid cops there?

seriously now America you need to demand your police force is trained to use firearms as a last resort now, because it seems you've become so lax in your oversight of Police they literally seem to be getting away with anything and everything

cynically it might take a white woman dying before something actually happens
Sadly, there is truth to this. An analogy is the wave of drug decriminalization happening in municipalities across the country. Now that we see a ton of white people addicted to and overdosing on opiods and meth, suddenly there's interest in a public health approach to drug abuse. In the 80's and 90's when the face of drug abuse was urban Black and Brown folks, the response was overwhelmingly "Lock 'em up and throw away the key!" - an incredibly punitive, criminal justice approach (along with militarizing police, etc).

Most people don't care if it's a bunch of Black people being shot and killed by cops. When it start happening to white people, it might sway some ardent cop defenders helping them to realize there really is a problem.

It's unfortunate, but true.

This needs to be plastered on every news channel nationwide. That's not the typical face you see associated with victims of police brutality.

I'm with others on the body camera issue. In an incident such as this, if they were found to be off, the normal protections police get needs to be done away with. You're no longer a cop if you aren't upholding your part of doing your job. Toss 'em in jail till things are sorted just as you would any other civilian shooting.

Really I think random body camera footage checks need to happen. Like how some jobs have random blood testing. Submit you and your partner's camera at the end of the shift and you don't know if someone will review footage from them or not. If there is no footage present, then you get a warning or two and then you're out on your ass.

As for this murder, my crazy wild guess is that the partner was just fucking asleep or dozing off and woke up when the woman said something and he 'feared for his life' and shot her. Like I can't fathom what other motive the guy had to just shoot her if she had just been standing there normally talking with the driver.

Sounds like the police are testing the waters on killing middle aged white women.

"We know we can kill black people no problem, let's see what else we can get away with."

I'm willing to bet the cops are going to get away with it. All it takes is the "I was scared" defense and they have carte blanche to murder.

I won't be waiting for any of the character assassination and "probably had it coming" we usually get along with these stories.

Don't hope. He'll get a job as a police officer in another town nearby. These killer officers aren't really fired. They're moved around like Catholic Church did with pedophile priests. New Yorker did an article on this sort of thing a while back, and found an officer with three negligent homicides who was still working as a police officer.

Ah, the corruption shuffle, a classic.

One of my friends knows her. It's fucking crazy this one. She's not the sort to warrant a shooting. America's police are fucking insane.

Well now...

How will Fox News spin this one?

She doesn't look like she has the dehumanising stare at all

I'm sure they can work some photoshop magic, or find some time she went out drinking and wasn't picture perfect, and she or a friend put the pictures on social media or some other manipulative bollocks that these types specialise in.

She's not american, Fox won't care. Even if she was, they'll just say something about family values or some other stupid shit.

Fuck cops. Fucking garbage.

Step son is on record saying "America sucks" obviously they are radicalized. Cops were called as a setup. Smart cops figured out the play and protected the constitution.

I just read about the story this morning. What in the world could have prompted a shooting like this? Hard to argue officer safety when you shoot a woman in her PJs across the face of your partner.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
"No weapon was found at the scene."

I mean... is this purely stating that the woman wasn't armed, or does that include the cops gun involved in the actual murder?

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Three sources with knowledge of the incident said Sunday that two officers in one squad car, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley. Damond, in her pajamas, went to the driver’s side door and was talking to the driver. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door, sources said. No weapon was found at the scene.

What.
The.
Fuck.

I hope this gets clarified like exactly what the fuck the officer was doing ?

What if a toxicology test shows she partook in a chief session a couple hours before she was murdered?

Certainly that would be cause for the police to fear for their lives, right? Right!?

They ain't got to defend what they don't even want to talk about. Fox News is the alternate reality network when it comes to negative news that makes their base have to rethink long held positions on things, or whenever Trump is in the news following investigation updates.

Maybe he knew they had their cameras turned off and just wanted to shoot someone. It's not like there aren't people going into the police job so they can carry a gun and get away with shit they normally wouldn't.

Let me guess what they're going to say

"She was acting erratically and approached the driver side of the police vehicle and made a reaching motion for the officer's gun seated in the driver's seat. The officer in the passenger side, fearing for his life and his partner, pulled his weapon and neutralized the threat."

Maybe he knew they had their cameras turned off and just wanted to shoot someone. It's not like there aren't people going into the police job so they can carry a gun and get away with shit they normally wouldn't.

What's scary is this is totally believable.

I could see some kind of death pool going around the force too.

Damn did you hear chuck got a white woman? That's 100 points.

I am hoping something societal-wise could come of this but nothing will change in the US.

RIP to her, this is terrible. If she gets smeared in the US news and these cops get off, then the average white citizen better wake the hell up when it comes to police worship.

So he shoots a white woman in a suburban neighbourhood?

One would have thought there are less conspicuous methods of killing someone if they were into that sort of thing.

This one strikes me as utterly unfathomable. I can't possibly understand what the motive could have been.

Nothing will come of this of course. It will be dragged out until people have long forgotten, officer won't face any jail time and probably won't even be fired from the force.

I noticed I didn't see any "let's just wait for all the facts" in this thread. Hmm, wonder why? Hmmm?!

Edit: Well at least I got it in before.

Rumoured account of incident doesn't sound believable. And I'll talk shit about police 'till I'm blue in the face.

Gonna need more info.
