1) The Yankees are in a remarkable position. They legitimately can afford Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. A truly scary team going forward.

Trout Watch:

By the end of the season Mike Trout will likely have accumulated more career WAR value than David Ortiz, Mike Piazza, Sammy Sosa, Ichiro, Gary Sheffield and Jim Edmonds. Mike Trout is 25 years old.

it's insane. every year he just immediately races out ahead of the field.

Angels get a lot of (justifiable) criticism but for the fans, we're blessed to watch Trout each game. Kid's crazy, and you can just see his love of the game when he's playing which makes it even better.

Sure. But it sure is frustrating to think about the Angels having the best player we may ever see in our lifetimes and they're doing very little to try to put Trout in the postseason. It's a shame.

It is time for Fun Facts on the Farm

First, for fans of the three true outcomes

@darenw

#MLB swing & miss % by season:
2017 24.3%
2016 23.8%
2015 23.2%
2014 22.7%
2013 22.4%
2012 22.2%
2011 21.1%
2010 21%
2009 20.6%
2008 20.4%

next up, in "why are games longer" or "christ can't these Dodger pitchers play faster"

@FiveThirtyEight

The average MLB pitcher now holds the ball a full two seconds longer between consecutive pitches.

and lastly in the "why would they do THAT"

@No_Little_Plans
The longer a pitcher holds the ball between pitches, the harder he throws his subsequent fastball. So there's an advantage to slowing down.

is all this related? YOU BE THE JUDGE (well, actually, you're very unlikely to be the Judge since he's hitting a shit ton of home runs and you're, well, here, but you get the idea.)

Donaldson and possibly Tulo back tonight. If they could get the rotation healthy the Jays might actually be a good team. Considering the slow start and health, the Jays record isn't really that horrible. They're gonna need a serious hot streak to get back in contention, but at least competitive baseball for the rest of the season is certainly possible.

They are 4.5 games out of a wild card spot in May. They aren't even really out of it. Considering their start I consider that pretty damn fortunate.

Their May hasn't been terrible at least. That embarrassing series against Atlanta is best left forgotten.

It does sound like Sanchez will be out for a while. When is Happ due back?

Not much being said about Happ but apparently he's throwing again. They probably just don't know, and after Gibbons made a bit of an ass of himself predicting the return of Donaldson and Tulo, the Jays should probably back off on the optimistic injury predictions.

Batista vs Odor round two tonight? He's been practicing his bat flip lately.

We're watching one of the all time greats and guy will never make it to the playoffs with the Angels.

Free Trout!

Remember when the Angels signed Pujols, and the media said they got the best player in the game the past 50 years?

Can we talk bout how bad this Gary Sheffield article is?

https://theplayerstribune.com/gary-sheffield-commissioner-for-a-day/

His ideas to fix baseball:

Let batters charge the mound.
Baserunners should be able to spike defenders when sliding.
Eliminate video review of calls.
Ban infield shifts (because they are created by "computer geeks." I guess he doesn't know that Ted Williams had to deal with shifts?).

He is right on a couple things, like the wild card game should be a series, but man, those are some dumb ideas.

A.K.A. Yankees fans will believe any stuff we throw out there, and will make for good website traffic leading up to the trade deadline.

n.b. They're not going to get either of them.

and just remember. these are the teams that didn't pick him

even the angels picked him second over someone else :p

Good thing the Yankees signed Mark Teixeira.
And lucky thing for the Angels that they had traded for Mark Teixeira in the middle of the season before.

Too bad for the Braves, who could have had that pick.
Instead, they got Casey Kotchman.

Of course the Mariners somehow drafted the worst CF with the best pick of the bunch

They drafted him as a 2B, IIRC.
Just checked, he still has more games played there than all OF positions combined (and only 71 games out of 610 in CF - all of which came in either 2013 or 2015 - so no idea why BR lists him as CF).

Yankees we're losing their first round pick regardless that year. If they hadn't signed Tex, their first round pick would have gone to the Brewers (Sabathia).
