A big part of it is that Eidos hired a company to specifically market Lara. They wanted to turn her into a brand. It also likely helped that she was a main character in a game when the overwhelming majority of main characters were male. Aside from Samus how many female characters can you think of that were the leads in major games back then?

Also Lara is very popular among female gamers. Even now she's one of the few female main characters and she's actually a strong character.
It's surprising to me she'd appeal to a female audience, she's an empowered figure certainly, but she's certainly sexually provocative at every possible opportunity in those early games.

But you're right about the lack of leading ladies in games, outside of Samus and Croft the only other notable one from the time I can think of was Jill Valentine really.

That cover art is amazing, Lara looks great. I haven't cared about the main franchise in a long time, but this is quickly becoming one of my most wanted games. I really, really, reeeaally hope they get this right. Lara has always been such a cool character it's time a game really did her justice - Guardian of Light and now this have totally reinvigorated my interest in Tomb Raider. I give kudos to Crystal Dynamics for at least having the ambition, and I pray they nail the execution.

Commander Jill Shepard (in my ME save, anyway.)

My younger sister loved Lara Croft and always wanted to try playing the games back in the day. She did beat Legend around when that came out and almost 100%ed it.

Well now there are plenty that I think are cool for female gamers, Jade from BG&E being a perfect example. Mrs Kratos from Heavenly Sword was cool too. Chell from Portal even.

That's pretty cool. It just stands out as odd to me, even in the training level of the first game you get all that dialouge about being in her bedroom and "time to take off these wet clothes" and I think the game even ended just before she gets in a shower. It's all very pandering to teenage boys I think.

I haven't really played any of the Tomb Raider games before but this one sounds really cool. Is the PS3 collection worth it for someone new to the series?

I've been hyped for this game since the first images appeared in magazines. The character model looks absolutely stunning as does the game itself.

Yes definitely.

April Ryan. Hands down best female protagonist ever, this can't be disputed.

Oh, come on, it's all really soft, besides the chick had triangular breasts, even in 90s there was easily available material to fap.

I played the first three TRs together with a girl from my class, in fact she played 3/4 of the time, as she really enjoyed it. Good times, especially TR2 which was our first.

Yup.
And probably the most ugly

Question is: will the ESRB puss out and "ban" it?
It wouldn't surprise me if they did. They'll probably think "too much blood". Hopefully official cover art is in the same vein. I like that picture.

Makes me wonder why they got exclusive (?) new details on this game then.

Best selling magazine in the country, that doesnt mean its good. There has been around the gaming history better magazines, but they all have dissapeared, we even had EDGE some time.
Nintendo Accion is the second one best seeling, and that one is even worse, if thats possible, its made by the same people as Hobby Consolas BTW. The worst thing of all, its that one is the "official" Nintendo magazine here, but Nintendo doesnt even touch it or help it, they only gave the name and official seal, because the magazine gives them money for using it.
Its so bad, that an official nintendo marketing pamphlet would been even better.

Certainly she was meant to be appealing toward guys, but that didn't take away from her being a strong character. She still did everything on her own and wasn't relying on other people to help her through stuff. I think people tend to pay too much attention to the way she was marketed and less attention to how she is as a character. The way she was marketed actually pissed Toby Gard (TR's creator) off.

Absolutely. Anniversary is a remake of the original TR, and that's often considered to be the best in the series. Legend is also really amazing. And Underworld is unpolished but still a lot of fun.

Well soft or not it was purely for male titillation I think. And while it's a side point, I don't think porn was openly available to that many children at that point. It's not like today where everyone has a laptop and access to instant streaming of free porn in their room. I know at my house those days there was a single one PC with 56k dial up.

Cool, I'll probably pick it up with some of my Amazon credit.

I meant good old press like Hustler or Playboy or whatever.

It's strange now you mention it, I've never even seen a porn mag as far as I remember. I've seen Playboy though, good point, I'm sure some kids did have that stuff.

Although it doesn't really detract from the point, women are provocative in media all the time, it doesn't matter that you can also find porn, it doesn't stop it infecting TV and films.

Basically this. I didn't pay much attention to the TR series at all growing up since I didn't have a PS1 early on and had this pre-conception that Lara was nothing more than a sexy avatar for guys to enjoy thanks to the kind of coverage the series got in the mainstream media and its marketing...

But when I picked up LCGoL and then the rest of the TR Trilogy, I was surprised at how much I ended up liking Lara as a character. Yeah, she's obviously designed to be very sexy and has ridiculously revealing outfits, but her confidence, take-no-guff attitude, and humor are just very appealing. Take her infamous party dress from Legend's Tokyo level - I certainly rolled my eyes at some of the animations during the initial sequence, but then I thought it was great that she tore it up and ditched the heels to go platforming barefoot, heh.

Looking forward to what Crystal Dynamics can do with the reboot, especially since they're taking their time with this one. Keeley Hawes deserves a lot of credit for the the character's current appeal, so hopefully they can find another talented actress to take on the role of young Miss Croft.

Really? Maybe in the first game, but I thought she looked fine in Dreamfall.

I'm loving the direction the game is going. I can't wait to see what comes out of e3(or before).

I really hope they don't make the game combat heavy, though it doesn't seem like they are.

I really need to play The Longest Journey.

EDIT: Is this her? She looks identical to Croft.

EDIT2: Never mind, it's not, but this woman does look like Lara Croft.

Hell yes, been waiting for this one to satisfy my adventure needs (Uncharted also helps to fill that gap quite a lot)

I would be surprised. If they can let a floating, dismembered hand float in space, I'm almost sure they will let a woman patch some wounds up.

And hey, the game will be rated M from what I've read about the game, so it should be proper for the game.

I don't think she looks much like Croft really. I don't want to derail, but as there are a few fans in here, should I play Longest Journey first or skip to Dreamfall?

Definitely play The Longest Journey first.

It adds a lot to the series.

Cool thanks.

Everyone can return to TR'11 hype. I hope it's amazing, it's a series that has been solid since CD got it, but I don't think it's hit greatness yet, with SE involved, I expect the additional time and money should bring good things.

Both. But TLJ first as Dreamfall wouldn't have near enough impact on its own. Also, TLJ is a rather short game (outside of a damning puzzle or two).

On topic I reallly want that poster of Lara.

I'm weird in that I played Dreamfall first, then became interested in April's character and then played TLJ. It was extremely surprising even playing them out of order as the characters and worlds are so completely different. If I had to do it over though, yeah, definitely play TLJ first so that you can appreciate what happens to them in Dreamfall. Back to TR now.
