Spent sometime with this, the animations and passing is so bad and janky. Coming from a sim player whom main attraction is online leagues i can't get behind how downright awful this game feels. The presentation is the one redeeming quality. Jump shot animations are so awful

Yeah, there's a lack of fluidity that's apparent when you transistion from dribbling and shooting. Pull ups and fade aways dont feel natural at all.

This rhetoric that nba live does not rely on animations and 2k still scripts heavily needs to stop. Nba live is as guilty of pulling off animation scripting as 2k is, and 2k has gotten better at making sure that anybody can branch out off animations at any point to give players more control.

Anyway, this game does have a lot to offer to players who like the career stuff. The on court play has some of the basics in place, but its just not up to par with any of the recent 2ks. Some people think this is a year or two away from competing, i personally think its closer to 3-4 years away.

It's not just in the animation system and controls (live already basically copied 2k's control template) where 2k has live beat by mile, but the actual depth of the 5 on 5 basketball blows this away. Too often, players around you are stagnant and not moving with a sense of purpose, which makes the game feel less dynamic than it should.

Solid effort, the game has its moments, and if they at least make it so that the progression in their careeer modes are not a grind session, i suspect they will get some members of the community to pick this over 2k at the 40 dollar preorder price.

No, double tapping the shoot button (square on ps4, x on xbox), while driving with turbo initiates a euro step (without turbo reaults in a spin gather).

Double tapping x on the ps4 results in a pass.

Yes I meant on Xbox tapping x Twice while driving to do a Euro hop step.

On another note I thought this post was very helpful in understanding the drive and dribble mechanic

How to EXPLODE:
Important: STOP HOLDING TURBO. this is not 2k, you do not need to use turbo to explode out of moves. Simply holding the LEFT (not right) analog stick in the direction you want to drive will burst in that direction. For instance, to explosively cross from right to left you do not flick from right to left and then try and turbo, what you want to do is flick left to right to put the ball in your right hand or if its in your right hand trigger a hesitation to the right and then simply hold the LEFT analog stick to the Left and your player will make an explosive crossover in that direction (very similar to how you could do this in 2k but you do not need to push the turbo button). .... much more at link

http://forums.operationsports.com/forums/nba-live/912920-quick-dribbling-tutorial.html

And some people are finding the dribbling shooting animations are better for them by increasing game speed to 75-80.
Oh and switching to Player lock camera during the career mode games made it much better for me. Hope they bring the player lock camera to NBA play now

The euro step is not the hop step. I can execute those moves fine.

KD's jump shot is quality. Curry's is pretty nice too. Don't care for AD's jumper but 2K never get it right either.

Why, I don't know. It's pretty textbook

I'll play the demo again when they add new stuff (which they said they would) hopefully with letting us play at lvl 20.

And I gotta say...I turned off all the stupid contextual hints and I enjoyed it a lot more.

With that being said I couldn't make a single goddamn free throw.

At this point I'm just waiting to see what 2k drops. Do they actually listen to their customers at least a little, and respect them? We shall find out. But I'm guessing a lot of what they're going to do is smoke and mirrors which is exactly what 2k17 was.

Trust the process.

I'm glad there is this demo. I'm quite pleased with it and they made great improvements over the last release.

Agreed. They have a great foundation to work with now and stop 2K having a monopoly over the BBall game market. This is light years better than anything else EA has done previously.

My little brother is playing 2k17 right now and asked when live was coming out.......I told him same day as 2k18......he said unless the prelude is that good he would rather get live first because it's a more fun and relaxing experience. We had fun doing challenges last night and it's something 2k doesn't offer. Being able to team up against 5 AIs for loot is fun as shit.

Plus progression is fantastic and doesmt feel like a grind. I mean we had 78 overall characters by the end of last night just after a few hours.

There's just something despite its jerkiness and wonk that I like in the gameplay. Maybe it's because spamming dribble moves.....you know something every NBA player supposedly does realistically isn't very effect in live, you have to actually do something to score

For someone who mainly plays MyCareer on 2K anyway, I think I'm going to go with NBA Live 18. I can live with the animations being awkward/janky or whatever adjective you would like to use to describe them. It's a lot more relaxing and it's not a horrifically annoying experience like NBA 2K's MyCareer has been the last 2 years or so.

The presentation for this game's MyCareer is a whole lot better and feels like there's more control or customization with your player. This obviously includes the archetypes, the animations, the builds/badges you can use for your player and so on.

However, I do hope the ultimate team mode or MyTeam mode for this game is even slightly better or close to MyTeam on 2K, and I'll be okay with it. When it comes to 2K, it's obviously the better game and it's obviously the superior basketball game. I think almost every person who's played this demo or played 2K for the last couple of years already knows this.

The honest trade off is you're getting the inferior game for a lower price tag as an incentive plus a better MyCareer mode. You're also getting a game that isn't so money hungry with Virtual Currency(VC). Honestly, on day one of 2K, most players just buy the virtual currency to max out their player till 87-89. That way, they can just go straight to park or start off being an offensive god (pretty much) during their MyCareer mode. At least in this game, you can buy crates through reputation which gives you the incentive to choose the dialogue choices that give you that as a prize.

Knowing all of this though, I'll end up getting NBA Live 18 day one and most likely 2K on the Switch in the future or on PSN when it goes on sale a few months later.

I'm personally just tired with 2K's MyCareer, not just because of the VC bullshit, but the actual story modes are fuckin terrible and they barely change year after year. I still can't believe we had to be a guy whose name was literally "Frequency Vibrations." Adding Spike Lee didn't do shit....every year your player is some unfunny douchebag with a creepy agent and some weird ass friends. At least in 2K11 you could decide to be a nice guy. The dialogue is cringe-worthy and the loading times are atrocious. I remember in 2K17, I quit because I was tired of my coach taking my minutes away just because I didn't attend those awkward and dull practice sessions.

Also, it's interesting how there's no news about the MyCareer plot for 2k yet, all they showed was the player creation. I'll wait or the Prelude, but as of now I'm taking that as a sign that they shoehorned in the MyCareer this season.

The info will be released in about two weeks.

We are definitely getting a dumb story mode. Character progression and archetype flexibility is where I will be paying attention.

2k's mode would be more tolerable if they let you grind with friends vs. the CPU.

But as it is....you sit there alone and spam shit all by yourself.

Yup, i'm glad NBA Live does this in a minor way, which is through making builds with your badges to let you create "two" types of your own player.

Also certain street badges are not usable in league. Meaning they feel that they would be unbalanced. So live is already a step ahead in terms of being able to balance characters

Yup, and I'm going to support this game as much as possible for trying to get ahead of the game.

Have not played a demo this much since Forza Horizon 3

Neither have I. I've been playing The One a lot, just trying out different positions and seeing the potential builds. It's fun doing so, I haven't really settled on a position yet, but I would love for EA to add in Hybrid Wing - Plays like Lebron James, I would run that position so quickly.

I am impressed. It is a bit clunky but I really like the dribble/drive game. It feels fluid and allows you to penetrate the lanes to get to the basket realistically with the hip ride animations. Compared to 2K where you very often get stonewalled, even if you have a fast player with great dribbling versus a slow center or poor defender in general. 2K is good, but that is the one aspect I always strongly disliked and felt it wasn't an accurate representation of the NBA. You can't stonewall in the NBA.

We are lucky if the start button doesn't cost VC to unlock.

This guy from OS encapsulates why I'm really hesitant about 2k and why they're so disappointing besides being VC hungry whores.

I don't think so either bro, but this is the type of gameplay 2K allows, as long as you "know your release" you can shoot 65-70 percent tbh. It's crazy.

A little background y'all:

I come from the competitive ProAm community (the mode that 2K has gained affiliation with the NBA in to provide an ELeague in 18) and it's probably one of the worst modes in regards to realism. There are Slashers & PP shooting green light 3's consistently because badges and having ALL your hotspots somehow trumps ratings. Everyone can do this. Your not considered an elite player if you can't green consistently with non-shooters. I have a hypotheses that it's because ProAM is played on All star sliders vs HoF that everyone can literally break the game.

I wrote this post in thinking it was going to reach the Proam community but instead opted to share it here on OS, with some real hoopers. It's frustrating being an elite 5 team, coming from playing ball in real life and having to cheese the game as a team simply to be successful. I remember the 1st few months we came out playing real bball and realized that **** wasn't going to fly...

I'm sharing with you guys a lot of compromises on my end. I know 2k wants to keep the ProAm & Park community happy, they even invited top Proam players to the feedback/playnow/community session, so i know their opinions are valued...it just sucks cuz from following them on twitter they're influencing the game...and they want the cheese to remain.

Beyond all the other glitches and cheeses that i didn't even mention, you have teams running bull**** 5 out offenses with a glass cleaner and Lockdown on the court and a playmaker dribbling the air out the ball uptop. IRL any sane team would leave the GC and LD in the corners and dare them to beat them, but because they have corner specialist bronze, catch n shoot bronze, all hotspots, and maybe getting a pass from a playmaker with HOF dimer when we do leave them. They can green almost EVERYTIME!

This literally drains the realism out of the game 4 me. U cant strategize. For in real life people would play off those dudes. Smh. It's hella frustrating 4 someone who just wants to play a sim bball game with 9 other people on the court.

I agree with this.

Playing the finals matchup, I'm actually able to get past guys. Like with Steph after a big switched onto him, I can actually dribble past to get into the lane. 2K made that too difficult a lot of times. Even in matchups where the ballhandler should have a clear advantage.

2K needs to seperate the park character from the career character, that’s one of the main issues.
Isn't Park gone in 2018? That gives me hope that. Eh will have separate SP progression for MyCareer and will relax the archetypes. If that's done I will still go with 2K18 but otherwise Live 18 might be what I get.

The demo was surprisingly better then I expected. It's still a bit janky but it wasn't bad by any means. Plus I am not in any hurry to get 2K18 since it will be $30-35 come November. So it's either pre-order from BestBuy ($48 with GCU and $10 certificate) or wait.

What did it do?

And I guess all versions must have the same problems? I'd been on the New Zealand version. I thought it might help to get the US one, but I guess same problems.

I have no idea bruh. I would think they would try to fix the Live Pick up Games, but nope, the Matchmaking is still completely broken

The VC is exactly why I'm considering going with nba live

Liking the game! Not a big basketball person, but it feels fresh!

I really like the look of the models in comparison to 2K. Some look pretty great! Curious to see what it'll look like on Pro since the base game already looks pretty sharp! I've noticed some ghosting (in replays) so I'm thinking they have some sort of temporal AA going on.

Fucking Paul's face. It's so perfect.

I know right :p I only noticed it after uploading the picture!

A Live dev said that Live Run should be working properly now.

It's nice that he's communicating with players. 2k, on the other hand....dead silent. They just fucking assume.

As someone who only plays 2k for MyCareer. I'm about ready to make the jump to Live. First thing i noticed is how smooth the animations were. They feel so fluid. You play 2k for all of 10 minutes and you can see the game run through it's set of stunted pre-canned animations depending on the situation. Things just felt more natural here and i liked it.

I also like the presentation and the way you level and unlock stuff. It doesn't seem to have the depth of 2k in terms of trying to make your player your own but still i enjoyed it.

Going back to the animations, when players would run plays on offense whether it be trying to find their spot on the 3pt line or setting a PnR they looked very natural and fluid. I felt myself actually scanning the court a lot more to ensure that someone wasn't open off a cut somewhere because all the movement looked believable. When you call for a PnR in 2k, its so slow and clunky it's almost like you can see the system thinking about what you're asking it to do.

The $40 price point is sweet too. I think i might bite.
