Simpler than what is effectively a phone number? Not really. Plus a hidden numerical code behind every account allows people to have whatever name they want without having to resort to stupid obscure stuff becuse everything good is gone. Frankly, most Gamertags I see on Xbox Live are way more confusing than a number.
The only thing needed over the 3DS system is the ability to add people you meet in games as friends, or add friends of friends as your own.
