Super Bomberman R |OT| Buggler? I Hardly Know Her!

Finished the story, the controls still felt weird and led to many stupid deaths, I can't see playing this online. Pushing a direction with the stick and seeing your character go elsewhere happened too much.
Let's hope this IP won't go back to the graveyard and come back with a much better budget.

This is a weird case. I love Bomberman and I saw even in the previews that this version seemed kind of strange. It could look better, play better and have fewer issues (e.g., no online lag). But still, the formula is so great that it kind of works as a casual game of Bomberman every now and then. And my wife and I are having a blast with the single player on Veteran.

I guess it's not worth the full price and I hope they'll patch it soon, but if you like Bomberman and money is not an issue it still works as a nice throwback launch game - in particular if you have friends, kids or significant others to play with.

Ugh the camera angle in this game looks fucking horrible.
Gods knows what they were thinking.

And the awful voices and the framerate drops.
Holy smokes what a mess!

The ai is broken tier. If you get eliminated from a match against bots watch their stupid unnatural movements and reactions to the point where at times two people get stuck on each other for the entirety of a match. Don't get me started on the story mode boss bullshit.

Ugh all these impressions, shouldn't of bothered grabbing this since I'm so enveloped with Zelda anyway. Ooh well, I'll still give it a shot tomorrow.

Just some anecdotal evidence, but I actually had a hard time getting a copy of this game today. Maybe it is just the weak launch and lack of games, but I went to Target and Walmart this morning and both were out of stock, I happened to go to Best Buy next and found a few copies, the cashier asked me if this was the only game for launch because he said everyone was picking up a copy today. Amazon is also sold out of copies too.

Anyway, I picked up a copy and looking forward to playing this on the side with Zelda.

The input lag, even offline, is really bad. Online is completely unplayable because of lag, which Konami is supposedly looking into. Really disappointed with this game. So much lost potential.

My advice, only buy the game if you're going to play in with 4 or more people locally. In this case even with it's flaws it's insanely fun. I'm a bit bummed out that you have to purchase the rest of the arenas. I find it really hard to earn coins.

Did you play using the arrow-buttons on the JoyCon? Those are way more accurate than using sticks or even the Pro Controller's d-pad.

How?

Tried for a long time yesterday and couldn't figure it out. Do both players need an account on the system?

Can you do it in every online mode, or is it locked to 1 mode in particular?

You need to pair 2 joycons horizontally and then just join an online battle and press A on both joycons to join..

Edit: 2x2 joycons paired works also..

Is there any good way to play Bomberman online these days?

Saturn Bomberman technically still works. Not that you'd find anyone playing that online this century. Or last century, either, to be honest.

And judging from the impressions in this thread, its reign as franchise king is now continuing for the 20th consecutive year.

Actually had a solid local session for that fairly recently. :)

How on earth do revenge carts work in multiplayer? My bombs are sometimes thrown a distance of ~5 spaces, and other times ~3 spaces. There doesn't seem to be any sign of a mechanism to control your bomb throw...?

If it's like the old games, you just hold the button longer to throw farther.

That poor Master Higgins player.

If they do another Bomberman after this/update this one, I kind of want them to add Master Higgins back, as a side-note. Or better yet, now that Konami owns Hudson, maybe they could do the one good thing to come out of that buy-out & put Snake in a Bomberman game.

Just finished the story mode (veteran/normal difficulty) and overall I still enjoyed it. General thoughts below. Spoilers possible I guess but I don't really think there's much to spoil.

- While the controls weren't perfect I didn't have too many issues after the second world as I got used to the feel. By the end, I really didn't notice myself dying due to control issues anymore.

- The world's themselves were decent with most simply needing you to kill all enemies to advance. Each world has its own little gimmick and 3-4 of the levels for the world take advantage of it. Most are fine but the escort missions from world 4 I believe are terrible.

- Powerups are very limited with spike and the bouncy bombs being the only upgrades. I honestly don't understand or remember the use of the bouncy bombs as they kill me more than help.

- Enemies are fine but it's mainly the same enemies the entire game and they just get a bit smarter each world. None are more difficult to kill than the rest except for those darn kitty robot enemies in most stages. In later worlds, they become more of a pain.

- Bosses are the best part of the game for me. All are broken into two parts. The first is just you and the bomber in a normal battle. This kind of sucks to be honest because they tend to be really difficult to kill without just sacrificing yourself (I honestly don't think I killed one legitimately the entire game). Luckily they only take one hit. Their second form is much better and I really liked playing all of them. You need to bomb their weak points until they fall down and then just bomb them as much as possible. Until you figure out their pattern you will get killed a lot but luckily dying or even continuing doesn't remove any of your bombs/powerups.

- The actual story is cute and looks nice but I honestly started ignoring it halfway through. I just don't have an interest in these types of games.

Overall I'd say single player is fun to play through but I know most play for the multiplayer so it's likely not worth it until that's fixed if that is your main interest. I don't much of any interest in playing online so I'm going to sell it so I can get BOTW.

Online is real frustrating, it's too easy to win one round then end up in a laggy slideshow losing your league bonus points for coming last. I've set the network preference to good connections only but it seems to make very little difference. Anyone tried a wired ethernet connection? Might have to grab the USB WiFi from the WiiU.

If your router is dual band, might try 5ghz or 2.4ghz to see if there are any difference.
there is a test connection option in switch settings that help decide which one is better.

My Switch finally showed up so I got a chance to play this.

- Story Mode is good even if the new graphics make things a bit difficult to see sometimes. The first phase of the bosses tend to either be drawn out and obnoxiously difficult, or extremely easy as you luck into trapping them within the first 30 seconds. The second phases are much better. Also, the music is pretty darn sweet.

- Battle Mode can sometimes be fun to play by yourself in these games, but it's not even an option here because the AI is ridiculously cheap with no way to tone it down - but if two CPU opponents are the last ones left alive they'll suddenly become idiots and just run down the timer doing inane crap. Still great as a local party game though.

- Online is just awful. I even set it to "only connect to opponents with a good connection" and still nearly every match had some lag. Not even just input lag either, bombs would take ages to explode after being placed. Really disappointing.

- The shop would be great if online worked properly, but getting gems is a bit of a grind without it, and prices were clearly balanced with the idea that players would be getting a lot of gems from online matches.

I'm glad a lot of people are buying the game to support Bomberman but I honestly can't recommend this to anyone when the main draw of the game is near unplayable. Konami claims to be investigating the issue on Twitter so here's hoping something comes of it.

I had some people over yesterday and we had a blast playing this game. We didn't notice anything wrong with the controls. The game might be pricey for what it is, and I probably wouldn't have bought it already if it wasn't for the launch hype, but I don't regret getting it. I think it's a fun multiplayer game.

Tried to go through some of the campaign today to get some coin and buy the stages for online....Boy do I not like it. It feels tedious, the campus cutscenes have good art but are just too long and the gameplay doesn't gel with me at all. Now yesterday's multiplayer afternoon couch fun? That was something else.

Beat Story Mode! Nice to see that
Pretty Bomber
wasn't forgotten, and the Twinbee reference in World 5 was cool... I could have done without the J-Pop credits song though. I'm almost disappointed they didn't bother to localize that, hearing those cringeworthy lyrics in English would have really been something.

No word of a patch yet?
Just that they're working on one.

I have 45 days to return my copy for full refund as long as it's unopened. So I'm gonna wait and see what happens with the patch. If no patch happens within 45 days, or the patch doesn't make a big difference, then back it goes.

Played a local game of this yesterday. 3 switches. 2 player per switch. All sitting at the same table.

Lots of lag. Awful.

I've played plenty of 6+ player Bomberman on the DS and never seen this problem.

What's the patch supposed to do?

One thing that I don't really get is how do you link up with friends who have the game for online?

Last night was a fucking mess as me and a friend had to call each other on the phone and select league mode at the same time to get into a game together. I know the Switch online is still in "beta" but this is pretty bad.

Am I missing something or is that the only way to go about it?

Any ideas, or is the online just this bad?

This game is pretty damn fun to play, but it is frustrating as hell. So many deaths come from getting stuck on corners or thinking you're putting the bomb down on a tile and then realizing you're one off.

Choose Free Battle instead of League Battle, create a room and set it to friends only. Then your friend can pick "Find Friends" and select your room.

we tried this but it resulted in just a 1 on 1 match. It wouldn't populate other players for us so we went back to league battle.

Being able to make parties so easily on xbone has spoiled me, this just feels so backwards. Which sucks since the game is really fun imo.

Reading stuff like this is hurting me inside. I really want everything about the Switch to be amazing, but bummer accounts like yours are worrying me.

This might be just this game and not the switch as a console

I'd guess its the game. I cant believe they fucked this up, I bought this, Zelda and 12 Switch with full intention to play 99% Bomberman but I booted it up and was immediately disappointed. Online laggy af, even single player has laggy controls what the fuck

Right - my concern is indeed the games. Game performance in both portable and docked mode need to be spot on. The Dragon Quest Heroes thread is another great example. With such a tiny library right now, the system can't afford to have shitty performance in games. I hope they patch the issues for Bomberman because I'm itching for a new entry.

Okay I finally have enough for a new map for multiplayer. Anyone have any recommendations which one I should get? I haven't been the story mode yet so it's only the starting 12 purchasable stages

Not sure what the return policy is on the store you bought it from, but it may be worth waiting a bit more to see if Konami will fix online via a patch.

I suppose I'll also see how it goes over tomorrow with a group of buds locally. I just better have FAST RMX and Snipperclips queued up just in case.

Also I'm sad this doesn't have the bomb dodging mode where they just fall from the sky.
