Give me a break, they're only within 10% after they've modified the results to reflect NPD. Numerous months we've seen examples of them being upwards of 30-40% out before they "massage" their figures to fit reality.

This a good point, but let me ask this: who in this industry is interested to keep these numbers a secret from the audience and investors? I mean: NPD numbers are also important for judge how a company is performing. Are these people all registered or is this a move to force them to subscribe?

No, I save the figures in excel before the NPD ones comes out. And you are right about those months though, but lately it 'seems' they have been better. But perhaps it's just wise guessing.. who knows after all

NPD has been pretty stale lately. You go in knowing either the Wii or 360 are winning. At least this means like dick measuring and living vicariously through multi billion dollar companies.

There's probably going to be more fanboy bickering over US sales now, as people try to analyse what little info is provided and interpret the monthly PR statements from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo through fanboy goggles.

Ayup. They have no direct competition. IIRC, PC Data was pissing them off many years ago so NPD gobbled them up. A lack of multiple sources is bad for everyone.

That's too bad, because I have it on *very* good information that PS3 sold almost a million units this month, and Move is selling 5x better than expected. But of course, XBOTS won't listen.

The only people who have the real numbers are the platform holders and publishers. Everyone else is just using estimates.

i know it doesnt work like that :)

joking aside, other than people on message boards who are interested in if they are winning, do publishers only sign up for this to see how the competition are doing? If they can't see it now, isn't it a good thing? Now they don't know if the drivel the competition made sold well, so now they can only compete with review scores thus pushing up the quality of games?

Exactly that. It doesn't make things better, it makes them so much worse (See, PS3 / 360 sold most in Europe argument).

I'll miss the software stuff, but I don't care about hardware. That stuff was interesting in the first few years when it could go in any direction, but the status quo has been maintained for 4 or 5 years now and is unlikely to change.
