Steam client update adds universal in-game screenshots! (on cloud) [Better Voice Too]

Ok, yeah, it's Shift+Ins. Here's a random pic. Every time you take one you get a camera sound and a prompt like an achievement.

It seems like you get a full Gigabyte to save images. Steam rules!

That's really cool, I love the screenshot idea. Although i'm guessing you could upload some dirty stuff, add Media player classic and watch some porn, screenshot!

See how long it takes until something like that takes.

That's well and fine that they upped the voice chat bitrate, but what they really need to improve is the latency between speaking and reception on the other end.

Screenshots integration sounds great though.

Yeah steam crashes constantly now. Fuck, I really wanted to use this feature... I can't boot any game and steam crashes.

Yeah, I can't get into my Library right now. It hogs some massive CPU time and then crashes the client.

Quality looks good though, can't wait till I can use it.

Great stuff. I already have FRAPS, but I don't usually have it running all the time except for when I want to fine tune settings to maximize the performance of my measly video card, and I don't like having to ALT+TAB my way out of the game to boot FRAPS, especially when most screenshots are, for me, a spur of the moment affair.

This was great until I remembered that when I screenshot I take metric fuck-tons of screens and keep very few. Still awesome though.

- Changed microphone voice input from 11khz to 16 khz
- Changed voice output from 8khz to 16khz
Pretty big increase in quality considering the audible range of frequencies is always half of the sample rate.

8kHz = hear frequencies up to 4kHz
16kHz = hear frequencies up to 8kHz

This doesn't necessarily equate to twice the fidelity, but there should be some improvement nonetheless. Time to fire up TF2....

So Valve is turning into Xfire?

Will Valve have any limits to how many Screenshots you can have?

What about hot linking?

f12 is the dashboard key in OSX, how do people of the fruity OS take screenies?
On my Macbook its the Volume Up key actually, but I've got a special Fn key next to Control and Option. Its annoying though.

My wonder is since it's beta does the feature work in games yet? Like will it only work right now of your private chatting using voice with someone else in the beta or will it work with everything since most people are on the old frequencies.

This is good. Very good.

But how about actually finish up the category management system? It´s ridiculous that you still can´t change the name of a category, move several games at once, reorder the categories or filter on them.

Do one thing and do it good, then move on to stuff like this.

Yeah it defaulted to Shift+Ins for me for some reason. You can edit the button in Steam settings, though.
I had the same, but it is easily changed.

It's nice to see Valve entering the 21st century on its voice codec though, the thing has been awful for ages and even GFWL uses a better one now!

Edit: Client crash.

I would not be surprised if video capturing comes in a few months. The reason why is because it'll really help with getting people into DOTA 2.

I, for one, cannot wait to download videos showing the best juke spots.

I never thought about that, considering they have all these plans to make it easy for people to learn the game Im sure getting video capture is a priority. Hm I wonder if they will eventually add the ability for people to write walkthroughs or FAQs on Steam as well then. I mean with the ability to take screens and video you could have visual aids for a very in depth walkthrough. Just a thought.

WARNING: IF YOU LIKE TF2, DON'T UPDATE TO THIS BETA QUITE YET.

That is, unless you love looking at "Parsing Game Info" for eternity.

One of my biggest console complaints right here. Allow me to take SS, wtf.

Steam I <3 you.
Console devs don't want the internet shredding screens taken from their games that inevitably look like shit compared to the game in motion.

Yeah, this is cool but this is hardly "Valve be gods" worthy.
Xfire did the exact same thing years before Steam.

Still a nice addition.

Edit: And Xfire does video recording/livestreaming too.

It also seems as though the screenshots you take are added to that game's background rotation in the library view. Nothing for non-Steam games though.

Thanks for making it the same hotkey as FRAPS, Valve...
I bet they feel really sorry for you, having to change your fraps shortcut key. Life is so hard sometimes, isn't it?

Shift+Insert seems like a counterintuitive choice. Normally that's paste in Windows. It's good that it can be edited though.

That is pretty sexy. Anything to make that UI even sexier is fine by me.
