Media Create Sales: Week 27, 2017 (Jul 03 - Jul 09)

The game saw a Western release in October (Europe) / November (US), so Western launch + post-launch sales are already counted there.

When did it release in Asia?

I'm saying western sales probably made up the vast majority of that 200k based on what we know about Japanese sales.

I hope Capcom someday brings the whole Ace Attorney series to Switch. VC or remaster.

They brought all the mainline entries from DS to 3DS even when 3ds was backwards compatible.

I'll be shocked if they don't bring them to Switch.

Nintendo needs to bring back the Famicom Detective Club.

Even the Nintendo DS was probably a good time to do it.

Never heard of this game before but man this looks cool.

It'd be awesome if they can bring back the franchise.

Dengeki has Switch hardware at 32.769.

Media Create had Gundam first day sell-through at 60%, next bomb for retailers is here.
The game also dropped like a brick after launch on amazon. Went from occupying 2 spots in the top 10 to having only 1 SKU in 27th place within two days after release.

there is something in Japan that is not monopolized by nintendo?

Interesting question, I had a hard time thinking of something as pretty much all the genres I play have prominent Nintendo games in them, so I went to my local bookstore to check out how they have the games organized and what Nintendo has in those categories.

RPG: Pokemon, Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario
Action: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Splatoon
Adventure: Animal Crossing
Simulation: Fire Emblem, Tomodachi Collection
Love Simulation: *nothing*
Fighting: Smash Bros, Arms
Sports: Mario Sports, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics
Racing: Mario Kart
Horse Racing: *nothing*
Rhythm: Rhythm Heaven
Board*Puzzle: *Puzzle & Dragon Super Mario Edition* *Momotaro no Dentetsu*
Learning & Educational: Brain Age, Flower & Animal 3D Picture Book

There certainly are things missing, but they were not in stock so I could not tell how they would get sorted. Nintendo does have some gaps it seems though.

So, safe to say that more than 30k Switch were shipped this week then ?
No. We have no way of knowing which tracker, if any, is most accurate to reality. The average of them all is slightly more likely to be correct, but this is not guaranteed by any means. So it's possible to make this presumption, but not "safe to say".

I can only think of 2d platformers as something that I'd really call a monopoly in terms of publisher, but as a platform holder they hold a few.

Breath of the wild is a tentative step into the open world asshole genre but maybe Aonuma is planning on going further towards that with the thief idea he spoke of.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Since there was a question of what counts as big, I thought I'd try looking at this from a different angle.

I took the 3DS from its launch through March of the next year (due to how fiscal years work), and came up with the following Japanese third party titles that managed to sell 200K or more.

3DS:

Code:
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask 117,859 / 396,914
One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP 76,578 / 326,737
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate [All Versions]	471,055 / 1,929,447
Inazuma Eleven Go: Light / Shadow 141,458 / 455,172
Resident Evil: Revelations [All Versions]	160,575 / 302,965
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning 79,809 / 264,042
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance 230,189 / 357,790

I repeated this with the PS4 and the Vita.

PS4:

Code:
Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below	255,292 / 360,698

Vita:

Code:
Persona 4: Golden [All Versions] 152,499 / 345,377
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f [All Versions]	158,009 / 227,492

The Vita does get an additional three or four months in this comparison, but it doesn't add any games.

I guess my question would be "Where do we feel the Switch will end up compared to these systems by April 2018?"

I wanted to expand a bit on this by posting the same kind of statistic, just by expanding on all the games that eventually crossed / reached 100,000 units sold. Same period (up to those consoles first post-launch March)

I just realized there's a difference between 4Gamer and Media Create site for Wii U and PS3 numbers from last week.

4Gamer has Wii U at 193 and PS3 at 153, Media Create is the inverse. Nothing major, but for who likes to keep tracking sales with precision, I give the alert.

Well yeah but in absence of a definite answer, the most probable one is the average of them, so around 31k.

The more I look at this, the more I'm imagining it will be marginally above the PlayStation platforms, but well below the 3DS. I imagine deviation from that expectation would also be in a downward direction rather than an upward one.

Mind, I don't think there's anything especially problematic with that. The industry is just not going to float a dedicated device to the levels the 3DS hit, if not just due to the development resources required to make a game these days.

I also don't feel there are strong signs that support is deviating meaningfully than how it started appearing for the Vita or the PS4 in terms of volume. Those were both pretty barren at this point. It could certainly fail to manifest, but as I mentioned earlier, it will be... a long time before we can really assess that on a like for like basis.

This is a justifiable estimate to settle on, yes. But "most probable" does not mean "very probable", or even "more probable than not". Choosing that number is almost purely for our convenience, and not an indication that 31k is significantly more likely to be true. It's useful to say that Switch sold about 31k, but it's not "safe to say".

So......level 5 delay strike again. This time for NnK2.... well they are doing well.

A lot of people feel that delays are endemic to their smartphone business, but I feel it's actually a problem across the company, and just shows more frequently with their smartphone games because they have 5000 smartphone games announced.

I feel they are stretching themselves so thin right now that they are unable to do anything at all. All these delays seems to support this view if u ask me.

Somewhere on the way they forgot how to finish projects. At this rate their next published game will be by Level 5 Comcept.

I'd like a new Paper Mario, but apparently Nintendo wants that series to burn in a raging dumpster fire.

I liked Color Splash for what it was, but man. C'mon, Nintendo.

PM may be too long gone.

M&L still has a chance to live.

Which stinks because I preferred PM.

Honestly same. The most I could hope for at this point is a remake/remaster of TTYD for the Switch, because I doubt they'll re-establish the RPG elements in a new entry.

or a fan game

I actually enjoyed Color Splash more than Dream Team, weirdly enough. Something about the M&L games just doesn't do it for me.

Granted, that was the only one that I played, but the other ones don't look wildly different.

Woh dude, the first three Mario & Luigi games are arguably better RPG than any Paper Mario. The others are just average or bad games.

I hope the upcoming remake of Superstar Saga will sell well enough to give a better direction for future games.

I actually don't have the game.
But the world they constructed is 10x more interesting than recent ML games. Music, Graphics and writing are all top tier.
NPCs and Boss choice not so much

But gameplay is gameplay. And gameplay is bad.
I couldn't justify getting it

Is Dream Team considered average/bad? I thought it had a good reputation.

I've heard fantastic things about Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story though, so I should at least try those out eventually. SS's remake might be an opportune time to give it a go.

Fair enough. The other aspects of CS carried the weight of the game for me, but I understand why the battle system would turn people off completely.

I think the different trackers are using different shipment numbers. Both Media Create and Dengeki has Gundam at about the same number (~122k). I think its unlikely that Gundam only sold about 1k during the next three days, going by Media Create's 60% first day sell-through.

I'm curious to how they come up with the shipment numbers. I would think that it would be a static number, but i guess its based on estimates.

Feels like a strategic delay more than a quality assurance one.
Similar to KH2.8 which was basically done but delayed to sell better

Ni no Kuni isn't the only game that got delayed recently tho. Just like Nirolak said, it's a company-wide problem. Whether it's mobile, 3DS, whatever, it's been ages since the announcements of so many games, yet we still haven't heard much of them since (without release date update after the initial announcement); and the rest all gets delayed, and not just once but multiple times.

One (imo) extreme example is Youkai Watch for Smartphones (port of the first game). That game got announced at Level-5 Vision 2016 (on 27 July 2016) and was announced as a Fall 2016 release. And it still isn't out yet. It's been a year. It should've been out in a couple of months. What the heck are they doing over there?

Those other things are what almost got me to a buy a JRPG in which I had zero interest in ever fighting a single battle. So that's pretty impressive feat lol

I doubt SS remake will have any imapact going forward.
The first 4 M&L games didn't reuse sprites like this.
The last 2 have reused sprites. I think M&L SS is just another way to make a game for cheap (as was Paper Jam noted by the shorter dev time and reused assets) that might sell decently.

Yeah Dream Team(from what I can tell) is considered average at best. SS, Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story are amazing.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. This can't be true in a world where The Thousand Year Door exists.
