Ever experienced racism from members of your own race?

Plenty. I'm white, but since I was born in Chile, I'm not considered white.
I've been called spic, spigger (yes....), And other stuff by Americans and Europeans. Been a long time since that, and one of the reasons I kind of hate my kind.

The funny thing about plenty of white people, is that they even hate their own. If you're not from a certain socioeconomic class, don't have the "surname" to back you up, you are considered less. At least here in Chile.

I remember the first time I ran into racism... it was after my dad retired from the Navy. We had lived on the marine base in Camp Pendleton before then in California. We moved to Florida... That's when I realized there was something very wrong with a LOT of people... but I still gave most the benefit of the doubt.

I'm white btw. I grew up in such a PC state and place, that I felt really uncomfortable when my principal referred to another student as "that black kid over there". It was pretty surreal at age 15.

Im as white and american as can be, and I once called a filthy italian. Does that count?

Context: I was in college on a trip through southern illinois and trying to reserve a camp ground space, some old white lady was cussing up a storm at the park ranger and when she walked away from him she looked at me and said "what are you looking at you filthy italian".

My great great great grandfather came from italy, but other than that Im a 3rd generation american. and what's wrong with italians? Are Italians considered white? Or was this a nationalistic insult?

I think nationalistic and racist insults are synonymous for a large part in Europe.
And of course Italians are considered white.
I'd say you experienced some true racism there.

can we please stop talking about RACE, having different skin color does not mean your a different race. Everytime some
american uses the word RACE i get these 1942 chills. We are all the same race, we just all look a bit different.

Back to the subject. yes got shouted out by some guys shouting "kanker jood, ga dood" which means "cancer jew, die"
because my mother had a jewish star necklace around her neck. We left immediately

Not towards me personally (I'm white), but having a half black sister I've had plenty of moments of dealing with upfront racism and having to pipe up to politely tell them to shut the fuck up. It makes it easier to know who I should cut out of my life at least.

Lol ummm...what? Race is a common word in the English language my dude.

Also America has a lot of different RACES. So we tend to use the word RACE a lot.

I mean colorism, but not racism.
Yup.

And like OP I've encountered a similar situation, when I was younger. These black girls were trying to talk behind my back about how dark-skinned i was, and how it was definitely not desirable. I happened to walk in on them. We all (read: they all) had a real good awkward laugh about the situation. Really stuck with me for years. Really stung.

I guess that was my first encounter with blatant colorism. Had a few minor episodes since.

Fake edit: Also encountered a ton of the "stop talking so white/ stop being a wannabe asian" growing up, so I guess if that counts.

I honestly feel bad for him, no way he feels comfortable in his own skin.

Yes.

"You're _____ but doesn't even like _____?"

"You've never been to ____?"

"How can you call yourself ______ if your surname isn't _______?"

"You're not a real ________, you don't even behave like one."

"You're a generation too late, don't call yourself _______."

I'm ambiguous enough that I hear racist sit about black people, white people, Asian people etc. From each group.

It's like a superpower.

The word RACE to define small differences in appearance, is a social invention and has nothing to do with science. It should be faced out. Like what the germans did.

Look, I would love for that to happen too. But that's not the reality we live in. It's especially easy to say if you're not a POC.

Germany is largely white. Also yes, obviously their history with the Nazis and the Holocaust would be a perfectly good reason to phase out anything referring to that time period.

America is not Germany. They are very different. Different histories, different demographics.

Of course. I'm British Pakistani and at school my core group of friends were majority white cos I had more in common with them (football, gaming etc) than I did the Pakistani lads who were into other stuff. Unsurprisingly, some of them took it as me "trying to be white". So I'd get some comments on an irregular basis, I just shrugged it off though.

White vs White is probably the most common form in Europe.

Don't Russians and Polish people hate each other? A Polish friend of mine told me that he was walking down the street in Ireland and two Russians spat at his feet and called him a Polish Dog.

Yes, hispanics/latinos can hate each other on sight depending on where they are from.

Salvadorians and Mexicans absolutely hate each other for the most part.

Colombians/Argentinans can be racist af towards Mexicans. They blame them for giving the rest of the hispanics in the US a bad rep.

Heh. Chinese people in China didn't want anything to do with me. I guess they see enough of the same there so they were a lot more interested in practicing English with my Caucasian classmates than me. We were on a trip to Guangzhou for a week.

Italians used to be discriminated in the US in the 1st half of the 20th century.

Brazilians hating brazilians is like a rule.
Most people think we have some kind of "original sin" that makes us more prone to being assholes and corrupt than the average human being

I found a terf trans woman once and lots of sexist woman.

Sure. I'm "ABC," so some Chinese people just assume I can't understand Mandarin.

I also get just as pissed as anyone else when "Mainlanders" skyrocket property values in my neighborhood, so I've been on both ends, I guess.

There's also the whole Taiwan vs. China thing, but that's more of a thing for older generations, and I leave that well alone. I never know when I answer wrong, sometimes, regarding my parentage, though. "Oh, I'm Chinese . . . BUT my parents are from Taiwan . . . BUT I was born in California, so...I'm American."

I just say hua ren or hua qiao and leave it at that

This happens to my wife pretty often in Queens. She's american born Taiwanese (a correction her family insists upon I might add) and about 50% of the time, Chinese people speak English to her. So she's learned to go straight to Mandarin from the first ni hao.

On the flip side, older Chinese women love my mixed raced kids. They always compliment them and such. Unfortunately, from my kids perspective, that results in a lot of staring. Sometimes they hate going to Chinese/Asian restaurants because people stare at them. They're both very expressive, pretty kids, so I can see why people want to stare. I try to hide them out of the way so it happens less.

On a final "o woe is me, poor white people"note, people always hand me a fork instead of chopsticks at these restaurants. That's the only thing that happens to me that's even tangentially related to racism actually. And lets be honest, its not much.

I worry sometimes for my kids, because in NYC, its pretty common to be biracial. However,if they move somewhere more "white" (for lack of a better term" I wonder how that will go for them? Are they the result of "race traitors"? Or just "exotic"? Ugh.

Yea some Puerto Ricans back on the island gave me some real shit for having been born and raised in the US. And it wasn't joking, they said some pretty messed up things to me and I was only about eleven years old.

And I've seen the racism towards my darker skinned cousins. Really infuriating. Even my grandmother said fucked up things about darker skinned people, and she was dark skinned herself.

Does getting shit from your own people for daring to marry outside your own ethnicity count?
"Why the fuck you gonna go marry a white boy? Like why can't you marry one of us?"
"Fucking white boys stealing our women"

I'm a light skinned black man. It's hard for me to remember a day back where I used to live that some black people didn't call me an oreo, or accuse me of acting white. My "favorite" was when I was the only black kid to graduate with honors from my high school, which lead to other black people calling me an uncle tom or a fake negro. Then there was the times my mother, grandmother, and grandfather told me that I should be ashamed for dating a white woman at the time instead of sticking to my own race. Thankfully, my mother got over it once I got married.

I was in my late 20th, when I first met a non-caucasian person.

Can't recall actual racism, have seen a lot of chauvinism. (one could call it "kinda racism directed at other ethnicities")

Daughter has a classmate from Africa (refugee). I was worried he could be bullied for being so different, but it's all good, "he is very cool" she said.

Oh I did not know that. Why for?

The same reason as everyone else. Hate and ignorance.

A lot of Italians immigrated to the US twords the beginning of the 20th century and we're mostly poor, many were in favor of socialism and anarchism, and during prohibition Italian mafias were very powerful.

Edit: after some more googling. It looks like that was one of the largest immigration periods in US history.

Apparently before that Italians were well respected.

Also, apparently one of the largest mass lynchings in the US involved the death of 11 Italian men.

Lots of stares when I went to a McDonald's in Boston with a very fair skinned Puerto Rican female friend in Boston. I think most people would just think she was white, so i think it was her first experience with being singled out for her appearance.

Some black people have said I "sound white"...I just got tired of having to manage 2 vocabularies in the days before autocorrect, so I've had the same enunciation now as I did when I lived in the projects.

Don't Russians and Polish people hate each other? A Polish friend of mine told me that he was walking down the street in Ireland and two Russians spat at his feet and called him a Polish Dog.

That has historic reasons (Russia basically ended Poland as a country once, together with Prussia (Germany),. Then there were many riots. Then, in Lenin and Co times Polish managed to fend off Russians on pure patriotism. Then, in 1939 Russia and Germany did it again, invading Poland.)

Some sort of tensions (although presented as a bit funny and not even remotely as bed as Russians vs Polish) are common across Europe. (end even region vs region) E.g. friend of mine complained that French policemen changed their mind on giving them a ride, after figuring they he and his friend were German.

Normally people are friendly.

Not so much racism, but defiantly discrimination:

When my wife and I were dating we went down to province town for the 4th of july. It was very late by the time we decided to head back to boston, so we looked for any place that had vacancy.

We found a B&B so my wife waited at the bottom of the while I ran up to the house to ask if there was still a room available.
A shirtless [not that it matters] white gentleman answered the door, and it was quite obvious there was a party going. I asked "my friend and I need a room for the night, do you still have a vacancy?" [in retrospect fucking terrible phrasing on my part]
The gentleman said "YES! The more the merrier!" so I signal my wife to come on up to the house.
The second she hits the porch the guys expression goes cold, and he looks at me and says "I just remembered, we did rent that room for the night, the guests just aren't here yet."
We took the hint, said our pleasantries and walked away.

Pretty much weekly from Asian American women when on dating apps. Obviously most Asian women are chill on there, but getting a variation of "I don't normally go for Asian guys, but you're cute" from an Asian woman is... frustrating.

Three Chinese people have told me I don't look Chinese

Not sure if that's necessarily racism. However, within Chinese people I feel like there's a lot of "classism" in the sense that they hugely value money, at least within the older generations.
