I hope Megaman 10's Hard mode is something similar to the way they did MM9's. I finally got a chance to play through Hero and Super Hero difficulty modes over the weekend and enjoyed the game even more than previous playthroughs. Roll on March :D

I totally agree. I would much rather every difficulty setting for platformers actually have different enemy placements and waves, to make the game easier or harder. It's more fun to replay it this way, rather than the difficulty setting simply being stat balances where enemies do more damage, or the player doing less damage.

Exactly. The only thing I would like to see improved over MM9 in this respect is to maybe give the bosses an extra attack of some kind (like in X5/X6 and Powered Up). After battling through Galaxy Man's stage on Super Hero it was a bit of an anti climax when I beat him easily without taking damage!

On a more general note, I'd also like to see endless mode make a return. I must have sunk more time into that mode than any other in MM9.

Jesus christ. This is what's coming out between January and March in 2010:

Perfect Dark XBLA
Mass Effect 2
Bayonetta
Lost Planet 2
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Bioshock 2
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
No More Heroes 2
Sin & Punishment 2
Super Monkey Ball 4
Monster Hunter 3
Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver

and now Mega Man 10.

That's over $600 of video games for me (from the ones on that list after tax).

Whaaaaat?

conductor man would have been better than sheep man... at least it has to do with electricity.

Sheep have a roundabout way of relating to electricity through wool. Wool is known to build a static charge. Still, we're entering Megaman X territory with this.

Not until we get Guns n Roses Man.

Ah cool. I'm up to Wily's castle on my second run through on normal. I figure I'll run through the game a few more times before I try anything more challenging.

Edit: I think it's safe to say MM9 belongs in the top tier of classic Megaman games along with 2 and 3. They really did a fantastic job on this one.

Liking the sound of some of those levels, the sports stadium one sounds interesting and unique. And its high time we got another good desert level in a MM game... too bad no slide still, though I can take-it-or-leave-it with the charge shot.

It's good to see someone say it. There's a lot of nostalgia-clouded fans who gripe that the game is just a "retro cash-in" or somehow, mystically, is just inferior to every NES MM title.

In terms of stage themes/graphics and music, it's not QUITE Megaman 2. (But what else is?) But I'd rank it as equal to Megaman 3 at least. It's a remarkable achievement.

i think it's actually QUITE mm2, but maybe not quite mm3 :p since mm3 > mm2

If you like tons of gimmick weapons and laughably easy Wily stages, anyway.
True dat, I plowed through MM3 a couple of nights ago and I was shocked at how easy the Wily stages were. Such a letdown coming off the awesome MM2 boss stages.

is this going to be a rip off like the last one. $10 for a short 8 bit game whichhas DLC that should have been their to begin with.

Boy, you just like to place emphasis on the negative, don'tcha?

I just pulled out my old Megaman Anniversary disc (awful emulation made awfuller by awful Xbox 360 emulation) and with a fresh head I got some things to say to the Megaman "insert number" is better than megaman "insert number" and Megaman "insert number" is the best evar crowd.

All the Megaman games are fucking good. All of them. Yes, even 8 is very good.

6 is so underrated and such a solid game. Great music, bosses, fun as hell rush adaptors.

9 is really not much harder than other games in the series, if at all. Hell in a lot of ways it's easier, and less cheap. Seriously if you go back and play some of the games after 10 years, you will be surprised.

2 is indeed worthy of it's pedigree. It really is epic, and if you play Megaman 1 first you will say wow. That said, it still has the crappy Megaman has ice on his shoes all the time control.

Which brings me to 3. 3 was a complete breakthrough in controls. It took them 3 games but they nailed it. 3 is also a quantum leap forward in graphics (or, just better use of color and better pixel art), introduces Rush, Protoman, and the slide... 3 is also the longest and most epic in the series. Oh and fuck the haters, this game is the right kind of difficult, especially the 4 extra stages (so long as you don't cheat!). Still my favorite of all time, and deservedly so.

4 is hard. Very hard. This is Megaman 2 with modern controls, only harder! Some memorable bosses and themes, introduces branching stages and secrets. This game has basically what I call the beta buster. I hate how the megabuster looks, feels... something is just off. Overall a solid entry.

5. Megabuster is perfected, and I swear the controls are even better than 3 and 4. Something feels tweaked, and though I can't put my finger on it Megaman has never felt this good (6 doesn't even feel as good). The megabuster might be -too- powerful here, but I'm having too much fun to care. Just when you bosses were getting lame (hello, 4), they come out with some really inspired robot master designs, and what I feel is the best soundtrack in the series (and that is saying a lot!). To me this is Megaman 3++. I really dug the Protoman angle as well.

7. 7 is awesome! Great themes, stages, amazing graphics. What's not to love? Well, Megaman is too big, and the screen is too cramped (thanks SNES lowest possible resolution), but really if you sit down with this one for a solid amount of time, it doesn't matter. I'll give final thoughts once I finish it (yes, you read that right, I have never finished Megaman 7. Emulators back in the day had trouble with the mode 7, therefor I never got around to it).

8 is another game I am kinda in the middle of. It's a solid action sidescroller, incredible graphics and sound, and hilariously poorly voiced cutscenes. That said, I think this game has too many, often really stupid gimmicks. This make's me appreciate 9's return to the classic, tried and true formula and level staples that much more.

Oh and one observation. If you notice, in Megaman 7, even though it pays homage to the classic robot masters in many parts (including Wily jacking Gutsman from the robot museum), the robots are clearly more "Megaman X" like. So are Bass and Treble. So are the bosses in 8 even moreso. It seemed like they were getting to the point where Megaman was going to converge with X story wise. I really hope that happens.

Besides the slide, how were 2 and 3's control different? I don't get the ice shoes comment.

7 was a good game, but didn't feel as solid as the NES ones. It was fun getting all the extra stuff like Protoman's shield. I didn't get far in 8 but I don't care for load times or voice acting in my Megaman. And neither one lets you pick from all 8 levels right from the start, a change I don't care for.

If I'm still in the mood for more Megaman after I play 9 to death, I think I'll hit up 5 and 6. 5 was fun but I never quite finished it, and I never gave 6 much of a shot.

Personally, I think classic Megaman is all about the NES games. Megaman uses the same sprites in 8 out of 10 of those games now, and when they nail all the pieces right (music, level design, bosses, graphics, weapons) it's a fantastic formula. If people want a more "next-gen" megaman, there are plenty of other spinoff series that handle that.

Keep the 8-bit sequels coming! :D

Wow, that Mega Man design contest in Nintendo Power brings back memories... I remember submitting "Garbage Man" as my pick, too bad it wasn't picked to be printed in the mag :(

Aww yeah, I've got that boss right before the skull level down! I actually speak the pattern out loud as I'm doing it to keep my focus. "Wait, wait, jump, jump, fire..." :lol

Nice post, I'm always surprised to see people praising 2 and 3 to death and dismissing the others. The series is very stable in quality, nostalgia googles are trully magic. Rockman & Forte on the SNES is pretty awesome too.

Personally, I prefer the lack of a charged mega buster. IMO it puts more emphasis on the other weapons. So that's a reason by itself why I prefer 2, 3, and 9.

I like MM1 through MM3 quite a lot. The charge shot is what kills most of the post-MM3 games for me. The one thing that separates Mega Man from its contemporary platform/action games is the weapon acquisition aspect. It was as if Capcom neglected coming up with cool master weapons for the later NES titles and focused on a bunch of new and unnecessary abilities instead. To add insult to injury, they took a series that was very much known for its amazing music and decided to fill up an entire sound channel with that god-awful charge SFX. This is the biggest reason why I rate MM9 so highly; Capcom stripped all that extraneous bullshit out and came up with what might very well be the best robot master arsenal in the series.

Can't really say much about MM7 or MM8 because I can't stand to look at either of them long enough to get very far in either game. I'm not sure what it is about the classic MM sprite, but hardly any of the series' graphical updates do it for me. Wily Wars was fine in this respect, but the slowdown killed that game.

Okay, I'm playing through Mega Man for the first time and I'm stuck fighting the Rock Monster in the first Wily stage. Even using save states I can't beat this fucker. >:| Any suggestions? I've watched videos and I just can't do it.

Here's some advice, play it like a man on a real console, none of this save state bs. :D

Elec Beam, memorize the pattern or use the glitch.

It's just a matter of timing and pattern really.

Or you could cheese it: Use Elecman's weapon, and repeatedly pause/unpause as it shoots through him for a hit each time, and kill him in one shot.

His pattern is the exact same on every volley. You only need to jump over the bottom two rows. The Elec Beam is his weakness.

Thanks guys.

Fuck yeah, I finally beat him. I had to pretty much save after each successful pass, though. >_> Maybe it's because I'm using the classic controller, but I just can't control the jump height very effectively.

I tried real hard to not resort to cheating with save states, but the game is just too bloody hard and cheap. I guess I'm just not a man yet. :(

I would have bought MM9 for retail price. It was the best game that came out last year besides MGS4, and maybe Brawl.

I never liked 8 very much. The game is quite beautiful but really has some gimmicks like you said. I hated the part with the slide/surf/skateboard. JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE Ugh. If I remember well two of the robot masters levels used these segments and one of the Dr. Willy stage did too. The ''kick ball'' weapon was not very hot either. It's used in the intro stage then you won't use it much again except for 2-3 occasions. Astro man weapon kicked ass though, always felt good to rain down meteor on everything. So did the stage selection screen.

MM9 was awesome. It has nice 'new' platforming elements, extremly good soundtrack and classic gameplay. The game is really challenging too. Let's hope 10 is as good.

First step is admitting you have a problem. :lol

Well, at least you aren't resorting to save states on something like MM5 or 6, MM 1 was hard as balls the first time I went through it too. Must have taken me three or four summers as a kid to beat the game.

I noticed quick weapon switch while they were playing. It'd switch, and show the ability's icon right above Mega Man.

I memorized it since they fixed the glitch in the anniversary collection. Felt so good.
