Watching/listeing to videos is the main reason I bother to get my laptop out instead of my iPad. I can't wait for iOS9.

I signed up for the public beta on Apple's site, do y'all think it will end it being stable enough to actually use next month when it launches?

Deep linking (might be in your list) is a pretty big one too. It creates a much smoother way to navigate between apps, and even allows developers to create small app ecosystems that intertwine. Also, related to that, the ability to make your app's data searchable will be huge.

I think the thing that will get my friends to update is low power mode.

that will likely be version 3 or 4 by that point so it'll be largely stable.

I don't get this one, it already tries to do this; what's different?

the shift key will change the case of the keys on the keyboard. A common complaint was that the shift key didn't adequately indicate whether it was on or off. This will be much easier to parse at a glance.

What's the likelihood of this running better than iOS 8 on an iPhone 4S?

I never upgraded to iOS 8, but I'm just curious.

Apple claims performance has been improved, but it is too early to tell since we're still in the first beta.

Ohhhh, I get it now.

Yeah, seems like common sense, it should have been that way from the beginning.

With this update and the lack of WP hero hardware I'll be seeing you guys on iOS with a shiny iPhone 6s come September/October.

I can't have split screen on my iPad Air 1?

it's an evolution release, not a revolution one and the fact it's on all the same devices suggests they have some confidence they can get it to run a lot better.

A few larger features aside, this mostly looks like a refinement of iOS8. Which is totally fine with me - some of Apple's best OSes were built as refinement (I'm looking at you, Snow Leopard). They're probably going big for iOSX next year.

Anyone thinking that multitasking on iPad actually got in some ways better than on the Mac?

I know about window snapping, now native with El Capitan, and previously possible with 3rd party tools, but this convenient snapping WITH optimised and functional UIs, easy app switching for each portion, and a PiP always-on-top video player from a multitude (eventually all) of sources kinda trumps the desktop in some ways.

I mean sure, there's no stuff like Spaces and the number of apps running simultaneously is limited, but I can see it being more handy and useful for the most basic day to day needs.

I'm really excited for App Thinning/On Demand Resources, as a 16GB iPhone 5s owner myself. The demo game/app they presented on the Platform States of the Union presentation monday, DemoBots, weighs 74 MB. With App Thinning implemented (according to the App Thinning in XCode presentation), it would weigh on average (it varies depending on the device) 22MB, and by streaming select content via On Demand Resources, the basic download would weigh 14 MB on average. Combined with the lower footprint of iOS 9, hopefully I'll be able to have much more apps and media on my iPhone :)

edit:
Boooo! This won't end well.

Most of the other stuff sounds good atleast.
I believe this relates to physical keyboards, and not the virtual one. You had to hit Cmd+Enter to send a message before, which sucked. If my speculation turns out to be right, it'll behave like it should: Enter to send, Shift+Enter to skip a line.

Two I'm interested in:

Hide photos - how does this work? Do you need to enter a passcode to unhide?

Find my friends - so people can see where I am?

With split screen multitasking and pip, it's going to make iPad a lot nicer to use as an everyday PC. You also have the two finger cursor and hardware keyboard shortcuts, which are awesome. I just wish they'd give us a file system and an easy way to upload files from local storage to websites (like uploading a modified resume when you apply to a job). That's the last thing I need.

Right now you have got three buttons at the bottom of the photos app. "Photos", "Shared" and "Albums".

Hiding a photo means it disappears from the "Photos tab", but it remains in the "Albums" tab. Basically, this functionality is not worth much.

Find my friends - so people can see where I am?
It's an app that now ships with iOS. You can turn it on if you want, but if you do nothing, no one will know your location. :)

iPad Air 2 split screen is the most exciting iOS update in years

I also just want stability, nice buttery smooth OS like back in the iOS 6 days

anyone have a video of the new app switcher on a phone?

or impressions for those w/ the beta installed?

Biggest thing is the ability to side load your own apps.

That is HUGE.

Bye bye jail breaking.

isn't complicated though? Like you have have XCode installed, compile the app and send it to your phone? I guess that might not be a big deal if you even care to sideload stuff.

Let me put this week. In the past hours, I have seen no fewer than 3 popular apps pledge to easy compilers, a package with a script that compiles it for you easily with just a few clicks for even the novice.

Sideloading is gonna be accessible and very real. It feels good to be running OS X, I'll say that much.

Good.

iOS 8 is bad. It's way better than it was at launch but still bad. I constantly see some weird thing happen that makes me reboot my device to fix it. Kind of like, well, Windows.

You can already have long passcodes.

From the site it seems that 6 is the new minimum limit. If so, that's pretty annoying.

Find My Friends now a built-in app
Pressing the "enter" key sends messages in Messages app
This sucks.

This has always been a feature on iPad. (Ok technically Rotation lock was the original function of the switch, then they changed it to Mute in one OS release, then people complained, then Apple made the function of the switch optional - but it all happened years ago, before the iPad 2 even).

Agreed, they need to crank up iCloud Drive and let it become sort of the Finder in iOS, then using the iPad as a computer replacement finally becomes a very real prospect.

It's on iPhone now as well.

Yup, until then I'll still need to consult a regular PC/Mac every once in a while :/

As long as they improve the constant reloading of tabs in Safari. It seems worse in ios8 then in previous versions. That's the only thing I care about.

Very interested to see what the new ipad is this year. The problem with apple though is that they introduce something that takes more power and hardware that can run it, then the next year they release something that runs it much better. I guess that's how all technology goes but it's too bad that the speed is always "just enough" and never blazing fast.
