Sonic Forces - Space Port Gameplay

He gets off a train just to almost get hit by another one complete with obligatory slowmo..

If that's a QTE...

...can I just let him get creamed by the incoming train?

I'm convinced the original pitch for this game didn't have a character creator but instead had Boom Sonic, and was cut after his game flopped hard.

Yeah, that definitely happened. The focus on the grappling hook thing is just too close to what they did in boom for it to be any different.

I wonder if originally it was only a boom sonic game entirely, and the ...not great looking Classic and Modern sonic sections were added relatively late in development.

hey guys remember this

The level design in Sonic Adventure is still mostly great even after all these years. Such a joy to explore those levels. Later 3D Sonic games would focus on more linear levels but this still worked out well in some of those games like Adventure 2, Heroes, and of course "The Boost Trilogy" (Unleashed, Colors, Generations) since the levels became more focused. The only other 3D Sonic game that tried to be as open as Adventure 1 was, funnily enough, Sonic 2006...

I'm not sure why as of recently Sonic Team has become obsessed with blocky platforming that plays out like a poor man's Mario.

It definitely has better lighting than Generations, which had a really oddly flat look to it despite the otherwise fantastic art direction. This kind of has the opposite problem though where everything looks really sterile despite being more realistically lit and colored (see blocky Green Hill Zone with beautiful shiny grass).

Unleashed proper is probably still the most impressive, or it would be anyway if it had been ported to PC.

There's no doubt about that. If the later stages ran at a more acceptable framerate then I think it'd still be pretty impressive. The hedgehog engine was genuinely great and I don't see why game critics didn't praise the presentation in that game since it was way better than it had any right to be.

Of course, strong art direction (Colors) will always beat out a game that looks better from a technical standpoint but looks generic (Forces). I'd love for Sonic Team to show us some new imaginative levels but it looks like that isn't happening.

As much as it pains me to say, Sonic Team is done. They've had enough chances. It's time Sega got a talented team on the main series of their flagship franchise.

What's so damn interesting and weird to me is that they pretty much used 2D Sonic's physics in 3D for Sonic Adventure and then just totally abandoned it afterwards. Slopes, loops etc worked just fine (loops were often automated in the final game, I think, but the physics engine could totally handle natural momentum-based loops, IIRC). Level design didn't really take advantage of it, but that's alright, they were still figuring it out...at least, they would've if they didn't abandon their gameplay after every entry.

Can we all just admit that they need to give Sonic to Nintendo?

The company that's bringing us stellar takes on "modern adventure Zelda" and "modern adventure Mario" must be able to tackle "modern adventure Sonic" right? Nintendo WOULD be able to pull off the REAL Sonic Utopia, I guaran-fucking-tee it.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
It feels like you really have to strive to make shit this boring considering the source material. Colour design in particular is total shit.

Imagine the game Mania would have been if it had the budget and time Sonic Forces has had. Some 30 zone insanity with full animated cutscenes, more unique character paths.

Sonic Forces will still sell 'okay' because of its kid friendly "on the shelf" tag, but Sonic Team are going to have to answer a lot of "why are you not as good" questions at the end of this year one would hope.

Well, whether we like it or not, this game will do pretty well sales-wise. A lot of Sonic fans seem to like the edgier tone and custom creator. Then there's the fact that a lot of them won't have played a mainline game since Generations. Add all that with the lower price point.

It would take Sonic 06 levels of panning for Sega to consider a major shakeup. I don't think Sonic Team will ever stop making Sonic games. I think they're still capable, but there seems to be something wrong management-wise. This has been the longest period between mainline Sonic games and but it doesn't feel like it.

What a trainwreck. Sluggish stop-start gameplay (thanks grappling hook), levels with the linearity of a runner game, boring mid-level cutscenes, bland music, QTEs (the bad part of Unleashed) and enemy placement which consists of 1 fucking type placed in long lines on boost roads where they pose no threat at all.

Literally every bad design choice from every 3D Sonic game rolled into one. Take Sonic away from Sonic Team already, they aren't up to the task any more.

I don't think I can really anything that hasn't been covered already with the level design. Looks absolutely rubbish.

I'm utterly convinced that Sonic Colours turning out as good as it did was an entirely lucky accident, and SEGA has no idea how it happened.

Director Morio Kishimoto and his crew of designers' previous work before Colors were the Storybook games (Secret Rings and Black Knight). And then they went on to make Lost World and now Forces.

Most of Forces' problematic level design faults (the majority of the gameplay comprised of iblocky stop-and-go 2D --despite being praised as one of the "good" 3D Sonics-- and few 3D levels that are very basic and linear in design) are in Colors as well (though maybe not as obviously poor).

They definitely got lucky once.

Meanwhile Hitoshi Miyamoto, who directed Generations, was regulated to the Mario and Sonic games. And none of Generations' designers (who hadn't worked on past games) were brought back for later titles.

Were they simply let go from Sega?

Not even the music is good..yikes. I put my faith into the wrong Sonic game at the time.

Mania is fantastic save a few spots, but this just looks the scrapings of the bottom of the barrel.

So the reveal trailer for Forces' basically misleading? Since the team is mostly from Colors and Lost World

FWIW the gamespot video labels this as Chemical Plant and includes character chatter and qte prompts during the train sequence

i dont think the stage looks out and out bad but it does look like someone took a sonic colors stage and stripped out all of the puzzles and exploration you would do with the wisps just leaving behind the parts where youre running on a track.

This crap is going to waste all the goodwill gained by Sonic Mania.

What goodwill? Mania wasn't that amazing and was targeting a different market than Forces is.

So the maximum number of rings the player can collect is 100, why even bother collecting rings after that point?

Can we all just admit that they need to give Sonic to Nintendo?

No because Nintendo has better things to do than work on a Sonic game, plus Sonic Team is capable of creating a good Sonic game just that they for some reason keep giving directer role to the wrong guy that clearly has no idea how to create a Sonic game.

This pretty much, Morio Kishimoto needs to stop directing Sonic game till he's better trained in how to create a fun Sonic game and Hiroshi should step up to take the direction of the Sonic series.

This doesn't just look like Chemical Plant. They basically took Chemical Plant from Generations and put snow in it. Which begs the question, if they were going to just straight up use Chemical Plant from Generations, why did they make a worse looking new Green Hill Zone?

At least some of the assets in GHZ are also from Generations.

Like I'm going back and looking at footage from earlier this year (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyTzm8WgtlE) and this level design is still WTF. The claim that Sonic games "played themselves" has always been sorta bullshit, even Sonic Rush had some reasonably sprawling levels with platforming, but what's on display here is the absolute most brain dead piss poor "we don't know what else to make with our game so here is some bland 'platforming' circa 2007" non-design I've ever seen

Not sure I'd want a Sonic mania 2 but I definitely think the mania team should be allowed to do a big budget 3d game.

The UI is still WAYYYYYY too big and obnoxious :(

E: Man they other characters REALLY need to stop talking.

But, at the end of the IGN clip we see the Casino from before - still no enemies, still massive visual clutter. BUT, it seems like they're at least altering the physics from before. Seems like he's actually gaining speed and doesn't stick to the vertical wall as before.

Silver's future is probably effed up from Eggman taking over the world in the present, and wants to help stop him

Which begs the question why he said in Colors that the future became good after the events of Rivals 2. Wouldn't Sonic Forces existing technically mean Silver's time was still fucked up without Eggman Nega's iterferance and should've warned Sonic and friends about it?
