It bothers me that it doesn't do what the card Explore does.

Pre-pre-release happening this Saturday in case anyone forgot. Had no plans up until today but now I'll probably only watch half of it on Saturday and finish it on Sunday. Going to try out a different LGS for the midnight release this time that does 4 rounds regardless of the amount of people that show up. 4-0 gets a box of Ixalan and 3-1 gets something like 12(maybe 8) packs. The other store i've played at always did it by the amount of people that showed up and weren't always the quickest to start on time so 5 rounds felt like forevvvvvvvvver.

That's the most insane prize support I've ever heard of, holy crap. Being able to guarantee a box to 4-0 is already two packs a person.

Magic's generally pretty good about "skim-friendly" rules text that will probably resolve to the appropriate reading even when skimmed, but you can never underestimate the ability of the player to find the wrong way to read a rule.

Yea, they only do prize support like that for the midnight release. Saturday and Sunday's events are break to top 8 but i'm not sure the details of prize support on those. Will most likely go back to my first LGS after the midnight one since 5 rounds will still be shorter than breaking to top 8. May try a 2HG release for the first time though.

Why are there still people around that feel the need to defend colonialism in this day and age?
Do people actually believe in inheriting the guilt of their ancestors and as such need to defend their actions...

Yep. History should be taught. Not swept under a rug. Even if it's a collectible card game.

So if Wizards isn't afraid to implement some functional errata to make the game cleaner, why won't they go back and change the old triggered lifelink to real lifelink? Same with deathtouch, non-keyworded hexproof, etc. That counter-intuitiveness comes up more for me than planeswalker redirection.

I lost an EDH game once because I assumed that my Arcane Lighthouse would take care of Canopy Cover when in fact it doesn't.

they tried doing that for lifelink but undid it because lifelink doesn't have the same applications as spirit link in the end. They really effed up with Loxodon Warhammer though.

Canopy Cover is because granting hexproof to opposing creatures is not the same as giving them quasi hexproof from a source of yours. As in if you enchant an opposing creature your opponent can't target it anymore while you still can

All the cards they errata'd give actual hexproof

Loxodon Warhammer is an outlier. For awhile, Lifelink was a triggered ability, so they reprinted Warhammer with Lifelink. Then, when they eventually changed it to a replacement effect, they decided that since the most recent printing said "Lifelink" it had to have lifelink.

Well, yeah, I realize it'd be a functional change. I was just wondering why Wizards was only willing to do functional changes some of the time.

Typically, they don't do functional errata on a card-by-card basis. Instead, they just change the rules, then the rules change causes functional change on individual cards.

In this case in particular, they're removing a rule, but doing errata to make cards function similarly to how they do currently. The reason they're willing to do it now is simple: Arena. It's something that they've always thought about, but were always wary about actually pulling the trigger because of the oracle changes that would be necessary. Arena simply forced their hand.

Here's an on-theme attempt at a playable Tibalt.

Tibalt, the Redeemed 1BR
Legendary Planeswalker - Tibalt
{+1}: Create a 1/1 red devil creature token with, "when this creature dies it deals 1 damage to target creature, player or planeswalker."
{-2}: ~ deals 2 damage to target player. That player discards a card at random.
{-6}: Each opponent gets an emblem with "whenever you cast a spell, you lose life equal to that spell's converted mana cost."

it's a 6 mana enchantment that does nothing until your next turn where it might be good. A janky limited deck is going to be its best use.

(+1): Draw a card unless target opponent has Tibalt deal 2 damage to him or her.
(-1): Tibalt deals three damage to target creature unless it's controller discards a card.
(-6): You and target opponent choose a number and reveal it simultaneously. Tibalt deals damage to both players equal to the number they chose. Then each player who chose the smallest number sacrifices half their permanents rounded up.

My comment was actually prompted by people doing the same as that guy in another reddit thread that commended Wizards on the flavour of Ixalan.
As somone from a country that partook in the holocaust the idea of inheriting guilt is just outlandish for me and I'm only a couple generations removed.

immediately change the game to "ok brian is way ahead on life total, now he's at 5. kill him!"

Shouldn't even be hard just need an outlet to pay life. The 2 drop works for instance.

So the idea would be to somehow stay ahead on life, have the 2 drop, drop this turn whatever, then swap life totals on trigger and pay4 life until near dead?

It's the clear outlier, but offhand it seems to do enough to support the other themes that you'd have a hole if you just pulled it out. Raid and Treasure both skew pretty strongly to the simple side, and Enrage is a pretty easy trigger to follow, so I don't think we have an all-of-the-last-[s]four[/s]-[s]five[/s]-six-blocks situation where there's just too much crazy stuff all at once.

The card count you need for decks is much higher this way than with the Duels structure so they'll absolutely have a problem if they stick to equivalent pricing. Every other CCG in the market has a more generous F2P strategy than Hearthstone and WotC will have to follow suit here to get real traction.

I don't know if I have seen all the MTG Arena details, so please let me know, but is there the idea of "Dust"; AKA, recycling cards?

It's on a CCG model, it's 100% going to have dusting or equivalent.

Don't worry guys, I have an exclusive first look at the Planeswalker Deck Tibalt.

Tibbers, Devilman of Gothland RRRRRRRRRRRRRBBBBBBBBBBB
Mildly Notorious Planeswalker -- Tibalt

(+1) Tibalt deals 1 damage to target player who controls a Tibalt planeswalker.
(-5) Draw cards equal to the number of cards in your hand, then discard twice that many cards.
(-10) Tibalt becomes a 1/1 Red and Black Devil creature with, "Whenever this creature dies, deal 1 damage to target opponent or creature."

don't play too many expensive cards unless they have cycling. stick to 2 colors. try to get at least 22 non-land spells during the draft. make sure your deck or sideboard has a chance against flying creatures (attacking with faster ground creatures in a damage-racing situation is an option)

* Bring snacks and water.
* Each round of drafting passes booster packs in the opposite direction.
* If the next person is still picking a card and you're done, put the pack next to them. If they already have a pack next to them, then don't pass anything until they're done.
* For a beginner, it's best to choose cards in this order: bombs (obviously good cards), removal (kill spells), evasion (flying, etc.), aggro (high powered attackers), duds (everything else). AKA, BREAD. Good drafting is more complicated than that, but this is a good baseline.

Also, this card is dumb and people who said it might be okay in limited or EDH are wrong because its bad in both of those. There's literally no reason to ever take this card in limited unless its the last card in the pack and your are physically unable to take another card. Even in EDH it's not even a good combo with anything short of Lich and even then you'd have to wait until you untapped (your opponents will kill you by then) and you only get to target one player.

I dunno, I guess I'm not a big fan of wacky effects that only exist to be wacky.

Oh, I doubt I'll ever play with it but it is a powerful effect. As soon as it comes down your opponent can't attack you until they can finish you off in one turn. It's great for buying you time as your opponent will have to build and maintain an enormous advantage to finally kill you.
