Heroes of the Storm - Receive FREE Mega Bundle (20 Heroes) for logging on next week

Thanks for the explanation! What the hell, might as well give it a try when this goes live, I like that objective based stuff. Is a lot of the player skill in this game leaning more towards how many clicks you can do per second and how many resources you can manage at all times, or is it more about taking smart chances and understanding the flow of the game and the options available to you? I tried Starcraft before as my only other RTS PVP game, and I just did not enjoy it at all.
The latter is of far more importance than the former.

StarCraft is way more intense with cpm than HotS.

Hmm. both the assassin and bruiser packs fill in 8 heroes I don't have, (the other two are like 5 and 6 respectively) out of the...21? I'm missing now. That's pretty fucking good, lots of newer ones in these bundles.

Now to decide which one I actually want.

They must have stats showing that as the pool of locked characters grows larger, players spend less money attempting to get them, whereas the fewer locked characters remain, there's a willingness to spend money to get them unlocked.

Blizzard basically weaponizes human psychology to get every last dime out of your wallets.

lol "Must have"...come on man. They and Riot have both stated that they stick with this model largely because the rotating free hero selection actually HELPS new players rather than hurts them. For all the "Oh but they're all free from the start!" that people like to trumpet as some benefit of DOTA, it's actually a huge barrier for entry in terms of learning the game. It causes new players to try and learn many heroes at once, have no idea what they're choosing or why when they do choose one, and generally perform worse early on which leads to it just not being fun (and people quitting, obviously).

I know speaking even as someone that is completely willing to stick with games and learn them, it's damn refreshing to boot up League at times and go into an ARAM or whatever and know that I'm just going to get one of a few dozen characters, and if I spend time learning that character I've got pretty good odds of seeing it again for the week. No, you're not going to be 'fair' going into competitive matchmaking, but you're not doing that anyway. It's not hard for anyone that is actually interested in competitive HOTS to get every character for free, just like it's not hard in League if you're playing all that much, and CERTAINLY not hard to just get the meta relevant heroes you might be interested in. Meanwhile, the benefits are obvious to new players (Hey, you've got like 3 assassins to choose from instead of 30, so it's much easier to make a decision and learn them, or even try all 3 and commit to one to get better with), the benefits to the company are of course obvious (yes, they make mooney this way, but if it were truly unfair to new players they would lose them and make no money at all), but I don't have a problem with companies that make games earning profit off of them. I have never once owned every hero in HOTS (I have played a lot at various times, but never THAT much) but I've been extremely close off and on the entire time it's been in alpha/beta/release, with very little time invested, and never once have I entered a competitive game and been unable to play a hero I felt our team needed. Beyond competitive it doesn't even matter, this isn't a game with a draft or anything, if you want to play Zul'jin just buy zuljin in game, it's VERY cheap to buy individual heroes, and nobody is going to stop you from playing him since you select it prior to even queueing up.

Is gold going away? Should we spend any we've accrued before 2.0 hits?

Gold is also used to reroll chests, which could be VERY nice with the vet reward chests we're getting, like if you get the chests with guaranteed legendaries, yo ucan open one, see what you get, and just reroll with gold if you want a different legendary.

Mobas are not really about APM or anything, obviously that still helps a lot, but they're much more a combination of overall strategy and timing and converging into skirmishes or team fights where your mechanical skill matters more in a vacuum. So you'll be doing strategic kind of rote ability usage, keeping an eye on the map etc, then force a fight with another team (or they force one onto you) at a time you or they find advantageous and then you're doing more micro things like positioning, hitting skill shot abilities ((Like firing a sniper rifle, you have to aim the 'line' of the shot, and it has travel time, so you have skill involved in actually hitting someone, while they have skill involved in juking you). The learning curves on these games are very high, which is why people can play them so long. There is always more to learn, even in a 'simple' moba like HOTS.

I would say a good way to describe MOBAs is about leveraging small advantages into larger ones. A very simplistic and easy to understand example, in HOTS when your team gets to level 10 you unlock ultimate abilities, ALA overwatch ults. They're very strong with long cooldowns, So if you can find small ways to get ahead in XP and get to level 10 right before a major map objective spawns, you then force the other team to either recognize that you're stronger and not contest your team for it, or you bait them into fighting you anyway and almost assuredly win that fight. You might have started this whole thing 10% of a level ahead, and end up getting a huge chunk of their base because of that tiny advantage snowballing into a bigger victory.

So I'm hearing about a Zarya skin that I can only get by playing HotS, except I dont have a computer that can run it. Is there any way I can get the skin or am I just completely out of luck? Thanks for any info!

How can your computer run overwatch but not HOTS?

Did you try it? It should run even on more than a decade old hardware.

But anyway, did they announce that stuff about Zarya yet? I haven't heard anything. They did something like that a few months ago so it might be likely since there's a new cross-promotion coming, but assuming they do, no, you either play HotS or you don't get it.

Ok, so these bundles are worth 100 gems which are the real money currency in this game. How much in USD are 100 gems worth? I wanna figure out whether it's better to buy the bundle or just grind gold for the heroes.

No announcement on what the tie-in for Nexus Challenge 2.0 is that I've seen. One would assume it might be that Zarya skin for OW players, but I don't think we know for sure yet.

And yeah if you can run Overwatch on your comp you can definitely run HOTS.

That 100 gems will get you 20 heroes. A brand new, freshly released hero costs 750 gems. That's how much of a deal they are giving people. I think the cheapest hero gem wise is 250 or 350 gems individually.

100 gems is like nothing, this is the equivilent of someone giving you a dollar and putting 50 bucks worth of stuff on sale for 99 cents. Yeah you CAN keep the dollar to do something else, but it's really not worth it to unless you literally have all the heroes.

Battlerite has replaced Heroes of the Storm for me, but I still keep Battle.net installed just for dabbling in Heroes of the Storm when I'm feeling nostalgic for that old Blizzard universe feeling.

Been playing the game since beta but took an extended break. After the 2.0 vid I decided to come back and I'm jumping for joy at this offer.

Looks like it's the Tank Bruiser bundle for me. A good bit of chars I dont own especially RAGS!

Dang, it seems like they keep having seriously sick promotions. They're especially doing well with the overwatch tie-ins. I sadly haven't been able to run their game for like six months now though. There is some weird bug that causes your game to not even launch. It's just been a black screen with a rotating blue circle forever now. I wish I could play it again.

yeah but reading Blizzard's post about the currency it looks like you can only spend gold on heroes and lootbox rerolls so eventually you'll run out of worthwhile things to spend gold on where gems seem way more flexible.

Also further reading tells me that you can get gems every 25 levels?! So you can F2P everything in the game? I mean, you'd probably have to no life it but still.

I'll probably still get the bundle but I know that if I get addicted to this I'm going to be 100 gems short for something exclusive to gems and hate myself later on for this decision. XD

Loot boxes and shards already cover getting everything. 100 gems is literally one loot box on the ptr. Like, let me put it this way:
You can buy one extra loot box with your gems
OR
You can buy the heroes, and with the gold it saves you reroll literally hundreds of times when you get a free loot box (which is often) until you get something you want.

A loot box has a chance at a hero, skin, you name it. 4 items. You can keep rerolling that shit if you don't like what you get (3 times per box), or you get shards and craft what you want, just like Overwatch. Gold is VERY good.
This is roughly analogous to getting 100 Overwatch credits, and being offered a chance to buy 50 loot boxes for 100 credits. Yeah, you COULD keep the 100 credits to work towards a skin, but the alternative is too juicy not to use.

It's as cut and dry as these things get: 100 gems is worth buying the bundle isntead of saving even if you only get one minimum cost hero out fo it. If you're getting several? forget about it. You'd be wrong on every mathematical level not to buy the bundle :) Hope that helps a bit.

If you're 100 gems short on a skin or mount and don't feel 20 free heroes which even valued at the lowest possible gem total for each would be a total of 7000 gems (350x20)...I dunno what to tell ya. You'll kick yourself more for passing it up than you ever will for missing out on a skin.

Gold does come in at a decent clip, but not fast enough to account for 20 free heroes. Not even 10 free heroes, really. The skins and mounts and the like can all be found in loot boxes from leveling said heroes, or from crafting them from duplicates in said loot boxes.

Would like to maybe try this game in the future. Can I claim this bundle just for downloading the game? Can I get it without even playing a game?

Oh wow, cool. A few friends and I played hots for the overwatch skin and we all ended up enjoying it a lot more than we thought, so I'll definitely give 2.0 a shot.

Hots deserves more love than it gets, honestly.

Yeah, I play OW on the PS4. My computer is an old ass laptop with an intel p9500 and integrated intel gma 4500 or something. If I have to literally do nothing but log in I guess I could do that, but otherwise...

why does the title say 20 heroes if those bundles are 10 heroes and you can only choose 1?

Because those bundles are 20 heroes, not 10

jesus christ im fucking blind, no joke. I was only looking at the ones on the left side. I am very sorry.

guess ill go with that fourth bundle since it has the most heroes I dont have (8) for if I ever get back to the game

I dont follow HoTS at all but it really does seem like a push to get people to stay with the game instead of logging in every so often for a promotional event.

I mean that happens with OW as well but OW is far more casual and easier to jump into.

There's a calculator out there, but if you've got a bunch of 10s yes, you'll get quite a few boxes.

Back-of-the-napkin tallies of the gold value at current prices, for those interested:

Assassin
8x 10k, 7x 7k, 3x 4k, 2x 2k = 145k gold

Flex
6x 10k, 5x 7k, 5x 4k, 4x 2k = 123k gold

Support/Specialist
7x 10k, 5x 7k, 5x 4k, 3x 2k = 131k gold

Tank/Brusier
8x 10k, 5x 7k, 6x 4k, 1x 2k = 141k gold

(Heroes not included in any bundle: Cassia, Cho'Gall, Genji, Gazlowe, Jaina, Murky, Sgt. Hammer, Tyrande, Zagara, and whoever is being announced next Tuesday.)

Obviously, every veteran player will need to subtract accordingly for heroes already owned and heroes you know for certain you have zero interest in ever playing. This will not be reflective of the relative values of the bundle for you as a player.

Keep in mind, too, that if you are a veteran you will be logging in to a pile of loot boxes that may also contain heroes. Since you are being awarded these mega-bundles via the intermediary currency of gems (which you could just as well spend on skins if you already own everything), you could pursue one of two strategies:

- Open loot boxes first, then recalculate which bundle is the best deal for you.
- Buy a bundle first, increasing the chance of loot box redundancy, which translates into shards you can craft into skins.

I'll be going with the Assassin bundle, myself, as for my current roster it presents both the best value and the least redundancy, and also fills in multiple characters that were already on my shopping list.

nice post. so this promo can be "activated" after we open all the boxes then?

BTW, Jaina isn't in there because a Free Jaina code comes w/ like every boxed Blizzard product nowadays.
Sorry, you have to buy the bundle with in-game currency? I thought it was free? Not trying to be a pain, just not sure I understand.
They're handing you a dollar. If you own all the heroes, you get to keep the dollar.

apparently they re giving us 100 gems, which is what each bundle cost. but you cna only buy one, the other 3 become unavailable (so you cant buy all 4 with 400 gems I guess)

This is a great promotion. I kind of wish they would give you a bit more gems if you already own every hero, but I don't really mind, I'm just happy they're doing such a great incentive for new players along with the launch of 2.0.

Next week will be very exciting for HotS; the official launch of 2.0, Genji, Hanamura map, and another hero reveal (expected to be Dva). It will be live streamed on Twitch on Tuesday at 11am PST.

Also, if you've played HotS in the past, you will most likely have a decent amount of free loot boxes waiting for you when you log in again; they're converting your old hero levels into a new progression system that has no level cap, and giving old players bonus loot boxes depending on their old levels.

Love the game, hate the community. Will redownload just to get one of these bundles. I already own a lot of heroes, but this will allow me to get quite a few of the newer ones.

Try joining some of the popular channels and playing some unranked or Team League with the folks in there, the community is pretty great overall when you search in these places.

type /join TeamLeague, /join Team League, /join Reddit, /join MFPT, and of course.. /join neogaf :)

Wow, really awesome. This might help some people who think that the F2P model is too steep get their foot in the door. With that many heroes you can definitely carry yourself into getting all the heroes you'd be likely to be interested in for free.

And as far as the best pack for a new player, I'd say any but Assassin would be fine. Try to stick with Muradin, Johanna, Arthas, Lili, Valla, or Raynor if this is your first time to a Moba for at least a few games. They'll help you get the basics down, and then you can move on to more interesting characters which I'm sure you'll find through teammates and enemies.
Thanks.

I'm definitely giving this a go, especially since GAF says it's the easier of the MOBAs and lately I've been in love with hearthstone and blizzard's quality in general.

Heroes gaf community was great back when I used to play. The community in general...well not so much, its a moba afterall.

Or "its a team multiplayer game on the internet afterall"

You could ask a friend to log in to get the reward, and when you upgrade yr pc you'll have the bundle.

I feel like I should install this game and log-in next week just to get this since it's free.... haven't played HotS in over a year at best, probably longer.. didn't really like it at all to be honest. This is free though.

The Flex bundle seems most suited for a noob like me, but it's the only one with no Overwatch characters :(

Bah!

PS. This is a great initiative to get new people to try the game. Worked on me.

For the OW players: if you own the Origins edition, you already have Tracer unlocked.
And if you own SC2 Legacy of the Void, you have Artanis, if you have the WarCraft movie check it for a code for Guldan, and most recent retail Blizzard releases have come with Jaina I believe. Also if you are a Hearthstone player, you probably have the Hearthstone card mount unlocked, and if you're a Diablo 3 player you might have Malthael's charger unlocked. You can still get a mecha-Spider mount from doing a thing on Facebook here. Don't worry, it doesn't spam your friends. And I think you can still get Raynor and Sylvanas for free with the recruit a friend promo, but it requires a little bit of grinding so I wouldn't recommend it at least until Heroes 2.0 so you can play fresh with your new hero mega pack and whatever extra heroes you have waiting for you.

Also I got Valla and Diablo from owning Diablo 3, but I don't think they run those promos anymore. And I think there was a freebie for playing WoW, but I don't remember since I don't play it.

Hmm, haven't logged in for a while (was waiting for 2.0 and got tired of the grind) but this is a pretty good incentive to fire the game up again. Thanks, Blizzard!
