Xbox One Deals with Gold thread

My thoughts on some of the games in this sale. Keep in mind I usually gravitate exclusively towards puzzle/adventure indie games so those are pretty much the only ones I'm discussing below and have played:

Pneuma Breath of Life: 4/5. Really good first person puzzle game. Has clean visuals. Isn't too difficult though. But the payoff is in the interesting story. A great game to dive into before The Turing Test, seeing as this was the developer's first game before releasing The Turing Test.

Broken Sword 5: 4/5. Another really good puzzle game. This one is more of a laid back point and click adventure game. Very nice art style, European settings, and characters. This is a highly traditional point and click game - you talk to people, interact with objects and use inventory and the environment to solve puzzles and mysteries. Very enjoyable story + puzzles for anyone that loves the genre.

Her Majesty's Spiffing: 4/5. Hmmm this is a really really short game. The game play is not substantial but it's incredibly funny which saves the game for me. It's an adventure puzzle game that involves a duo exploring space at the UK Queen's bidding. The biggest strength was the game's humour. There were multiple parts that had me laughing audibly at the cleverness or absurdity of certain story situations.

Laserlife: I can't remember off the top of my head the rating I gave for this game but I remember disliking it. Rhythm game where you follow lines to the beat of the music. It was always difficult to tell where the lines were with respect to my position on the screen. Aaero is a similar game that is way more polished with better music, game play and presentation. I'd say buy Aaero at full price instead of buying this at a sale price.

Dreamals Dream Quest: biiiig maybe; the game seems a little rough around the edges

Monochrome and Four Sided Fantasy: very strong maybes; these two games look pretty neat. M

I just wanted to thank you for these write ups that you do. Although we don't always agree (I thought The Fall was average), I genuinely appreciate your insight and it helps me with my game purchases. Going to get SPIFFING and Turing Test after work.

The main game is not too difficult. There were some difficult puzzles but the game does a really good job of teaching you the core puzzle/gun mechanics and equips you with pretty much everything you need to solve every puzzle room.

There are optional/side puzzles which can become very challenging though.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition

100%'d Turing Test. The game is great. It's basically Portal with a better atmosphere (imo), more interesting story, and easier puzzles. Great call Montresor.

Played about 10 minutes of Jotun. Very charming art style. Seems a little easy, so hoping it gets a bit more complicated as things get going.

Haven't started SPIFFING yet, but I'm getting eager!

I was hoping I'd have a chance to try the free Hitman level to help me decide if I want to buy, but I guess I'm just going to have to pass for now. I've got a few 'long' games that I still need to beat (or start lol), so no big thing.

I picked up Turing Test and The Fall and that's going to be it for me. Turing Test was on my 'to-buy' list and The Fall was an impulse purchase.

I played the free opening of Hitman and was surprised that it didn't really grab me after hearing a lot of great things about it (I've never played a Hitman game before). Could be that I just wasn't in the mood/stealth fatigue, but regardless I'll hold off on the season pass for now and maybe revisit it during a future sale.

If 'Spiffing' was $3 or less I'd grab that one too, but I'm trying to really limit my purchases (and backlog) this year so I have to pass.

Yeah probably. Actually I believe it is one of the worst ACs although AC2 started this whole Open World thingy but ACB really pushed it too hard.

Just thought about buying it to complete the collection. But it would be smarter to just wait, especially if I have no real interest in playing it lol

I actually did get into Unity and tried real hard to keep with it to the end but they ended up requiring soooooooooo much farming of the exact same shit tasks to get high enough gear to survive later missions. Then in the meantime tons of missions required you to use the exact same spiral-in approach to not get sniped or bumrushed by 50 dudes with pistols (and they nerfed wall dives in scraps) so all the creative freedom of engagement from AC2 was gone and your "assassinations" were just loud bloody slaughters after silently and meticulously killing 200 guards all around them without the target noticing.

Such a shame because I loved the whole France setting and it was pretty brilliantly realized physically. The gameplay just seemed to infinitely rub your nose in all the weaknesses of the game until you could see nothing but clone people doing clone tasks and committing clone crimes for your clone mission busywork. I haven't played an Ubi game since and am scared to try the new Ghost Recon even tho it seems legit.
