new 4" DSi model to be released within this year in Japan

Has anyone found out whether or not they're increasing the DPI? Enlarged pixels make me a sad panda.
It's the same DS internally. Still going to be outputting 256x192 images. If they increased the screen size and also increased the DPI, the result would be a smaller image with a giant border.

I don't understand how the screen could be the same resolution and be 4" or larger. If Nintendo truly is making this system as an E-Book reader, how the heck would that work at the DS's resolution? It would be the worst reading experience ever.
It's really not a problem. Now doing so on GBA was a bit of a chore, with a page turn seeming to occur every other second. Still, I prefer PSP for this task now.

I thought, could this be the "big Nintendo" news that was rumored last week in reference at the Famitsu delay?? (btw no Famitsu news this week yet???)

I am still wondering how big this going to be, maybe someone with Photoshop skills could do that.
I couldn't figure out another shape of the Dsi other that the current but bigger.

Well, here's a pretty rough job. I found a promo image of the DSi. Increased the screen size by 23%. Made the area to the left, right, top, and bottom of the screen the same as in the original. Only changed the top part so as not to double my work.

Thanks a lot for the hard work, Now we can have a pretty good idea of how big this going to be (if the keep the current design, i couldn't think of anything else)

so it's just the upper screen or both screens?
I mean when it's for old people and e-books it wouldn't make sense that they just increase the size of the upper screen, right?

If they are going for ebooks, I wonder if they will include font changing features.

I still find it hard to believe that the system would just purely have a larger screen and no other features (modified resolution?)

Why? Several anecdotes in this thread have indicated there's at least a little demand for it. Nintendo's probably got their own mass of market research indicating people want this device.

modified resolution

Pretty unlikely without a platform change.

If this 4 inch model is real, I can't think of a reason to upgrade. DS visuals blown up would be kinda repulsive assuming they keep the same resolution and just made the screen bigger (they did with the DSi, but it was also .25 inches instead of a full one).

From the retellings I've heard, when the DS was first announced, many people were "lolololol" for a while, then Nintendo announced that one of the screens was a touch screen, and the system started attracting interest. While I am doubtful that it is the case, is it not possible that the new DS simply has more to it than has been revealed/rumoured? I don't mean a major compatibility-breaking change, but something akin to Apple's tiny little surprise iPod alterations.

Just for the laffs: A 4:3 3.5" screen is about two inches high, as is a 16:9 4" screen. Enter: The Nintendo DS Video!
or maybe NDS Play! ... still, lol

Like I said earlier in the thread, Nintendo DSHD! :lol

I'd be surprised if Nintendo went 16:9. Pleasantly surprised, but still surprised.

I think this is "only" the best way to convince DS Lite's users to switch to DSi. The original DSi failed somehow. This should help the process to be smoother, if the DSi that is out now will be completely substituted by this new one.

Hah, sorry. I did a search in this thread for "wide" and for "16:9" but didn't think of "HD".

Granted, if Nintendo wanted to keep compatibility (visually, that is), they might just add pixels to the left and right until it's 16:9. So we'd have like a 342x192 top screen with the regular game content horizontally centered (or I guess 684x384 with hardware doubling, which is pretty cheap to do).

Interesting Reuters article with some analyst comments. I have to say -- these analyst comments are pretty hideously off-base IMO.

TOKYO, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Nintendo Co (7974.OS) plans to launch a new version of its DSi hand-held videogame player with a larger screen in Japan as early as this year to kick-start sluggish demand, the Nikkei business daily said on Tuesday.

Nintendo, which cut the price of its popular Wii videogame console last month, has been looking to bolster demand for the DSi, whose monthly sales have slowed to a third of their peak levels following its launch about a year ago.

Nintendo's hand-held, which now has a 3.25-inch screen, is struggling against competition from Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPhone, whose screen is about the same size.

The new version will have a screen larger than 4 inches, which would put it roughly on a par with the screen on Sony Corp's (6758.T) PlayStation portable game player, the Nikkei said.

"A bigger screen alone does not count for much," said KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide, adding that Nintendo needs better graphics quality and a more powerful chip to run multimedia-type games and become more competitive.

"Nintendo is under pressure from iPhone and iTouch."

The DSi now uses a chip by ARM Holdings (ARM.L).

The large-screen DSi will sell for 18,900 yen, about the same as the current version, the Nikkei said.

Nintendo spokeswoman Yuka Tanegashima declined to comment.

Nintendo also plans to launch a version of the DSi with more robust anti-piracy features for the Chinese and South Korean markets by the end of the current business year in March 2010, the Nikkei said.

Its shares ended the morning down 0.5 percent, outperforming Tokyo's electrical machinery index's .IELEC.T 1.7 percent decline. (Reporting by Mayumi Negishi and Nathan Layne; Editing by Michael Watson)

Sluggish sales of the DSi? Really? Need to beef up the graphics due to competition from Apple? Really? And down to 1/3rd of peak levels... by which they mean launch levels :lol :lol

Since when did mainstream "professional" writers start using the term "iTouch" to describe the iPod Touch? smh

Don't believe a single word analysts say, they're pulling it out of their asses. They should shut up and go back to calculating number projections.
