Valve announces Artifact, a new DOTA-based card game at TI7 [Up: A few details]

This is EXACTLY what I would expect from Valve in 2018.

Fixed that for you. Will probably be in beta until 2021, however.

It could end up being a great game but a) I didn't expect Valve's first game announcement in years to be a TCG based on an existing property, b) it's waaaaaaaaaay late in the game for a new TCG to invest in and thus feels really cynical and c) them thinking announcing this in the way that they did was going to be received positively makes me feel as if the stories we've heard from ex-employees about employees drinking the Kool-Aid are in fact at least somewhat true.

Reactions are baffling and tinged with a lot of entitlement.

Personally, I like DotA, I like card games, and I like Valve's stuff so...I'm excited.

Yeah I'm getting real sick of this too and HL2 is one of my favourite games ever. They don't owe anyone anything and don't deserve to have every new project they're working on trashed just for being unrelated to Portal/HL.

All the hearthstone competitors pretty much fizzled out. If anyone can compete, it's Valve.

hopefully it's internally developed and not contracted out to some outside developer. They gotta be serious about it if they want to get anywhere.

It's internal Brad Muir is developing it

What if they come out and say we don't sell packs in this game. Everything is free like in dota2, only cosmetic/crates etc. That would be disruptive.

I was disappointed by the announcement. But this is way off the mark. They sell cosmetics.

"Digital goods" (Gabe's favorite phrase) yo. This is perfect for them. It will print money. I will be seriously surprised if it doesn't have some sort of crate/key opening RNG wallet suicide including card drops.

Nothing wrong with this announcement in and of itself.

That being said it FEELS TO ME like the digital CCG space is getting crowded. I'm not sure how sutainable all of these games will be.

I know many people were happy to have some Hearthstone alternatives there at one point as Hearth had kinda gotten stale and WotC was kinda in limbo on what they are/were gonna do with Magic.

At some point I don't see how they all make it in a crowded market. Someone will end up bombing.

That being said on a personal level any CCG that isn't also on mobile with cloud saves along with PC and/or Consoles is DOA.

That's true and possibly something that could happen given they don't pay for the labour of creating cosmetics anyway.

I just think its funny that their next game is a card game of all things. I mean, I understand it, but its funny.

I keep saying the same about online casinos in Europe yet new ones open daily.

Whatever. I made peace long ago with the fact that Valve is no longer a relevant game developer in any way shape or form. They are a service provider and make a shit load of money as such. So I guess they see no need to do much else.

I expect more from a privately owned company though. It's such a disappointment

Honestly what I'm confused is the timing of the announcement. On a Tuesday, after a game that wasn't even the final one of the day, while we still have 4 more days of games.
Why TODAY? Why not at the ending of TI?

Funny thing is I bet half of the people that complain about hl3 haven't even beaten or even enjoy the series.

I like card games and I like Dota 2 Heroes but don't care for the actual game anymore so fine by me.

If they put effort into it ill probably dig it.

But I will act mad to keep up face to be apart of GAF.

"Oh gosh darn it it wasn't the HALF LIFE 3 ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE INTERNATIONAL we all expected.

Well shucks."

They did say before that they're working on three games. Maybe they have more to show? Or maybe I should finally learn my lesson and stop getting my hopes up.

A genre of game to make maximum profit off of whales and desperate suckers to build that sweet sweet deck in the ever changing meta due to "balance" patches that make previous decks less viable. How Valve of them.
$5 says all the cards are free, and Valve only sells cosmetic items.

This feels more like a parody of a Valve game announcement at this point. I give them five years before they release an early-access ARMA III mod based on Half-Life.

Am I supposed to be angry or something?

Valve is allowed to release games that aren't Half-Life 3, you guys.

Come on.
Yeah I don't really get the negative reaction to this. It sounds cool honestly.

"Why didn't they announce Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, and CS:GO2 at this Dota event?!?!"

It's like the people that expected an announcement of Platinum's games on Switch during the Splatoon 2 direct.

Yeah, I can't imagine Valve not selling card packs.

The Valve that decided on the monetization of Dota 2 is not the Valve of today, sadly.

Kinda like how MOBAs are? And yet, there are interesting gems that come out of it.

Heroes of the Storm comes to mind.

Genre is irrelevant. If the game is fun, the game is fun. This announcement is more interesting more because of how Valve and Blizzard are just constantly after each other.

DOTA 2 came out when the only big game was HON and League, and it was pretty much the original MOBA. This just feels like Valve trying to play catch up, I don't know.

Blizzard: What should we write... I have a big weiner?
Valve: I want to poop back and forth.
Blizzard: What? What does that mean?
Valve: Like I'll poop into her butthole and she'll poop it back... into my butthole and then we'll just keep doing it back and forth. With the same poop. Back and forth. Forever.

Yeah, I'm the same. DOTA seems to have cool heroes and the overall style is neat, but I don't have the time/interest for MOBA games. I like CCGs, though, so heck, I'll try this.

Somebody on Reddit posted some details. Don't know if any of it's true, but it certainly sounds different from other card games.

Random info from Day9 on stream:
There are three game boards that represent the lanes
You control 5 heroes, just like DotA
You can equip item cards on to the Heroes that you buy with gold
There are creeps that spawn every turn
You can play creature cards
Some cards are cast on the lane and have persistent effects on that lane
Each Hero has abilities like their DotA counterparts ("You can cast track on a Hero as Bounty Hunter and get extra Gold")

Wouldn't mind trying it, but would prefer to watch the death battle. Subplot: Gwent will also release sooner or later and will also act as a CDP v Valve sub-battle considering how heavily they can push GOG with Gwent.

I'm confident it will be a fairly good card game.
Maybe even a great one, with excellent art, mechanics and a great UI.

I will probably try it at some point.

I still hate that this is their major announcement about a new title after years.
It's like they are deliberately trying to disappoint people at this point.

We wait 7 years for a new Valve game announcement and it's a card game.

I really like card games, so I'm excited. I think they can be the first to match the presentation value of Hearthstone that no one else has.

But I completely understand why everyone else would be disappointed.
