OORREEEGOOOONNN!!. PPOORRRTTTLLAAANNNDD ORRREEEEGOOOONNN!!!

Probably won't really be posting in this thread until the 2nd episode of this season airs, still working my way through Season 2 for the first time. Currently on Episode 6, really enjoy the show, but man is it weird/campy/goofy/fascinating lol

The 1st and 2nd episodes air together, the premiere is of the first two episodes (and then episode 3 & 4 available immediately after on-demand but airing next week).

But if finishing the season, in the next week or two, know there won't be any new episodes after the premire+on-demand until June 4th, which is when Part 5 airs (Parts 1 & 2 air tomorrow, Parts 3 & 4 air next Sunday on TV (but available on-demand after the premier of 1 & 2 as said), after that starting with Part 5 we get one new part every week (though we skip July 4th weekend so won't be any new part that week), until the finale on September 3rd where they air Parts 17 & 18 (the final two parts) together.

Hyped!

People seem to be respecting the embargo, good. Even though I was trying to find something last night all I got was what's been posted so far. Haven't had an experience like this in media in awhile going in so blind to the overall tone. Can't fucking wait.

Oh okay, thanks - will keep this in mind!

So here's the role played by every returning actor (if there's been recasts for old characters or if some of these guys have been cast as new roles there's no way we can know right now):

Agent Dale Cooper
Laura Palmer/Maddy Ferguson
Shelly Johnson
Bobby Briggs
Betty Briggs
Mike ”Snake" Nelson
Audrey Horne
Ben Horne
Jerry Horne
Sylvia Horne
Deputy Andy Brennan
Lucy Moran
Deputy Tommy 'Hawk' Hill
Leland Palmer (...Well...Ray Wise is back at least)
Sarah Palmer
Philip ”Mike" Gerard aka The One-Armed Man
Doc Hayward
Gersten Hayward
James Hurley
Big Ed Hurley
Nadine Hurley
Norma Jennings
Gordon Cole
Albert Rosenfeld
Denise aka Dennis Bryson
Dr. Lawrence Jacoby
The Log Lady aka Margaret Lanterman
Ronette Pulaski
The Roadhouse Singer aka Julee Cruise
Heidi aka Happy German Diner Worker
Louie ”Birdsong" Budway aka Great Northern Hotel Worker Who Speaks A Few Times
FBI Agent At Bus Scene (Played by Mike Malone in Fire Walk With Me)
Jacques Renault (well his actor is in the new season)
Double R Diner Cook (he speaks a few times but barely played a role in the original)
Jumping Man
The Giant
Carl Rodd aka Trailer Park Owner in Fire Walk With Me
Trucker Laura Got Freaky With in Fire Walk With Me
Frank aka Cop Who Can't Spell Jaguar (thanks for correcting me Flipyap)

Sooooo that's as far as anyone knows the full returning cast list... Who are the top 3-5 characters you're looking forward to seeing again (though a few of these are questionable if returning as their role or maybe doing new roles, but let's assume for this question they are hypothetically all returning for their old roles), and if you really want to go crazy the ones you're most surprised to see returning?

Has Lynch, or anyone from HBO etc actually come out and said that watching the entirety of all the old series and films is mandatory to understanding this?
Granted you might not get the full experience if you're not completely clued up going into this, but I will be amazed if it's completely impossible to follow and enjoy if you go in blind.

Expecting new viewers to have seen the original from over 20 years ago, in addition to all of the follow up content, is insane and commercial suicide.

Lynch said in an interview that you didn't have to know anything.

Saw this post about the premiere on dugpa forums. Not really spoilers, but I'll tag it anyways.

Just finished speaking with a friend in the industry. He was at the premiere and afterparty. There is a total embargo, so no tweets or anything are allowed. I respected his boundaries, but he did volunteer one piece of information: this is not meant to be easily digestible by a fairweather audience. If you do not have the originals fresh in your memory, it will likely not make any sense whatsoever.

This may be a problem for the show's success, but as a fan I'm happy to hear it.

I hope this doesn't mean that you have to remember literally every little detail of every character. It's been impossible for me to rewatch the series before the start of 3 and there's only so much even the best recaps can show. I had completely forgotten about a few characters and plotlines before reading posts about them on here.

This is my concern.

I'll watch the first 4 but if it's too much I'll just need to rewatch and catch up with S3 later

I think that was about how much should you know about the new season
No I remember this too, the interviewer replied Lynch had mentioned watching fire walk with me but Lynch said something along the lines that he'd like that, but that you don't NEED to know things. Gah,
I hate searching for stuff on mobile.

I'm surprised that Josie Packard isn't returning. She was a strong character.

I think she's a little wooden for this new series.

I mean, technically with her fate she could be in the new season, but they wouldn't specifically need her actress for her role.

And while I doubt for Josie, there likely have been some characters that have been recasted, IE I severely doubt Sheriff Truman is completely missing from the season but he unfortunately is probably recasted.

Also the whole group of that side of Twin Peaks is basically missing. Now Pete obviously couldn't return because his actor died, but I'm really sad Catherine isn't in the new season. I never really was big on their whole subplot about inheritance and the lumbermill and whatnot, but Pete and Catherine were such enjoyable on-screen presences for me I always enjoyed when they had scenes in the original series. Catherine's actor was fully willing to be in the new season, but she wasn't called on. Thankfully she took it respectfully, figured Catherine may not have a role in the new season, and as anyone relating to that subplot is not in the new season (except Ben Horne, but he had his own separate subplots to others), I figure it has to do with it just not being involved.

The actress Joan Chen was the wife of Kublai Khan in Marco Polo apparently, huh! Edit: Well, that joke went right over my head, not actually having reached that scene yet.

Any way, currently watching the series for the first time. Just finished episode 9/10. Ray Wise is the friggin best, omg.

And I read the Twin Peaks episodes have only gotten titles over time, because of the german translation. So odd, haha.

Two interesting little pieces in the news which are a bit funny when they come together.

Mark Frost: "We've taken full advantage of censor-free cable."
“I would say we had a liberating amount of freedom this time around. And we took full advantage of it, from start to finish,” he said. “It was a way to deal with things that we didn’t have to turn into a euphemism or an innuendo. We could pretty much tell it like it is and that was very refreshing. And I think it will show up on screen.”

Now, this doesn’t mean fans should expect loads of cursing. Showtime CEO and president David Nevins previously explained, “There are moments of very strong material, but [co-creator] David [Lynch] is pretty clean,” he said. “There’s darkness and there’s scariness, but a lot less cursing and probably somewhat less nudity than most of our other programming. Definitely a lot less cursing.”

Twin Peaks actor Jim Belushi thought he was auditioning for a porno
“My agent called me and gave me an address to a warehouse deep in the valley, and he said, ‘Just go, they just want to talk to you, and I said, ‘all right,'” he recalled to EW at the Los Angeles premiere for Showtime’s revival. “And I walked into this room and there was two women and a video camera in a warehouse in the valley, and I thought that this was some kind of porno film that he was sending me on.”

Belushi explained he “just talked for about 15 minutes with them, and they were very nice.” Three weeks later, he got the call. “You know that meeting? That was for Twin Peaks. David Lynch would like you to be in the company,” he remembers hearing over the phone. “I just felt so good because he’s such a respected auteur, and I love his sense of storytelling,” he added.

(...)

“I had to adjust my rhythm, and it started out with a cup of coffee,” Belushi said. “I poured a cup of coffee and started my line and [Lynch] went, ‘No. Nooooo. The coffee is very important.’ I spent 20 seconds pouring and sipping on a cup of coffee before I even started the scene. So, it’s so beautiful to have that freedom to relax. There’s no rush, the scenes take their own shape, and you become this organic creature in this world that David creates.”

Just realized that if there is any humor in this new season, a large part of it will likely come from Cooper having fish out of water moments after being gone for so long.

"Internet? What's that?" His childlike sense of wonder was already a big part of his character before, now he'll be simply overwhelmed with brand new experiences.

It'll really give the men in black lore a whole new dimension :p

Mothman Prophecies reference; in there they often show up to diners asking questions regarding paranormal sightings and don't seem to know how to do basic things like using utensils.

It was basically that new viewers will be able to follow along but you should have seen the series and movie to fully appreciate season 3. That's the jist.

The convenience store meeting scene is amazing and better than what we see in the film, but I don't think the extended Jeffries scene worked at all. I think sacrificing the convenience store scene was necessary to give Jeffries the strangeness they were going for; alone it just played as overdone quirk.

Yeah, I loved the original convenience store / Jeffrries scene. I was afraid that the extended convenience store scene would've been worse as I feared if Bob talks it ruins the whole scene, but damn, it was amazing! And Bob delivered the line way better than I ever dared to hope.

The Jeffries scene however, although I basically love to see the other things that happened with him, was a bit of a disappointment in that Lynch used way less impactful takes for the extended cut. Originally he was more on point, even a bit accusatory and very determined whereas the new cut had him just maybe a bit more confused but with much less power. Even the simple line "who do you think this is there" was better than the new version "who do you think that is there." The delivery in those lines were very different from each other.

While in the original scene Jeffries managed to even be somewhat scary, he now had even a bit of comedy in the character (him moaning on the table sounded more funny than serious). Not to mention the "shit came out of my asshole" line later from the bellhop which ruins the whole thing.

I still love that we were able to see his full scene though. I would've just liked Lynch to use the original takes in the beginning of the scene.

EDIT:
also his movements and shaking in the original version looked more like he had just went through dimensions but in the new version it looks more just some normal shaking. The original felt it's also his mind that is having an epileptic semi-seizure, but the new version feels it's mostly just physical.

How exactly do you watch the missing pieces? do you just watch each cut scene separately or is there some specific order to watch them in

edit: just saw the posts above me llol

or do you splice it into FWWM

It's a separate film with interesting scenes that didn't make it to the final cut of the original film.

To add to other answers, Lynch has had plenty of time to re-edit the missing pieces scenes into FWWM if he wanted to, but he hasn't. He even remastered all episodes in the show. This seems to suggest that Lynch prefers them separate.

I do wonder if technology will play a big part (if any) in this season.
I don't remember it being much of a factor in the original show.

They pose problems. Like when did Jefferies appear? Was it February 1988 or February 1989? Did Mike know that Bobby had already given half of the money to Leo or not? And the biggest one of all... who is the muffin REALLY?

maybe tomorrow it rains
Girlfriend just finished her first watch of the series earlier this week. My second time. Now we're watching a recommended fan edit of FWWM, which is a first for both of us.

.see you in one daY.

I gotta remember to watch the final episode and Fire Walk With Me again before then. I'll be sure to get my coffee ready for 4 hours of PURE HEROIN DAVID LYNCH.

Boooooooo. No fan edits.
I like that fan edit a lot, but yeah, not for a first time watch.

Though I'm not sure what to watch with my mom. She already watched FWWM years ago but doesn't remember a thing. Disliked it though, so I'm wondering if the edit could make her feel differently.
