150 titles have been released for PS VR*3, achieving more than 12.2 million copies sold at retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PlayStation Store as of December 3, 2017. *2

Much better then I expected TBH. Once they get that resolution up and make it wireless and light, I think that's when VR will truly take off. Either way, good start for VR and I hope devs are making money supporting it.

I wonder if is selling accordingy to Sony's expectations. I love it and don't want it to have the same fate as Vita.

I don't think this number is anywhere near enough for publishers to invest with serious effort on it. I think we will continue seeing tech demos and small indie games until it dies out quietly in a few years.

Christmas will probably add a good several hundred thousand more to that.

I wonder how the other two are doing. Probably somewhere over a million between them as well.

For the first tentative iteration of a completely new tech, I'd say VR did pretty decently.

Sony really need to make the Aim controller an official accessory. Right now it's at officially supported level.
Also, their people need to start asking around, reading gaming boards/forums and put together a proper calibration guide. Currently it's mostly "do this because I had a success with this thing", ex. the green ambient lights.

If PSVR's library of games ends up anywhere close to the quantity/quality of Vita's, I'll be happy.

(but I get your point)

Seems like good news. Really looking for more full-featured, full-length experiences as opposed to the the very "Indie" library that exists now.

Skyrim is the best thing that has happened to the vr generation. Very smart of Sony to lead the tech by having it exclusive this winter and bundled coupled with price drops. Valve and oculus dropped the ball big time.

Fantastic news.

Rigs
Star Wars
REVII
Farpoint and Aim
Skyrim VR
Doom VFR and Aim

And upcoming titles like Fallout 4 have made my PSVR Purchase beyond worth it.

It's not as good as my Vive setup with tracking, and full room experience, but the software has been on point.

VR is the future. This is the PS1/iPhone 1 of VR, we are in for some serious craziness in the next 10-15 years.

2M in one year for an accessory thatís been $400 until recently probably has developers on notice. Thats very good for an accessory and I wouldnít be surprised if it moves another half million by Christmas with the insane deals they have.

Theyre getting Fallout 4 VR and are considerably better VR tech and Rift is almost as cheap as PSVR...also, Onward is the best thing to happen to VR ;)

But yeah, I would like Skyrim for the Rift. Sony probably offered Bethesda an exclusive deal they couldn't pass up.

Impressed by these numbers though, VR in general has a long bright future.

LOL OK.

Why would VR quietly die out in a few years? The tech is going to get orders of magnitude better within the next few years. VR is only to going to keep improving and expanding it's user base. Do you even play VR? Do you understand what VR adds to games?

And as for "tech demos", Resident Evil 7, Skyrim, Farpoint, Doom VFR, Solus Project, Edge of Nowhere, Chronos, Lone Echo, Obduction, and many more full games would like a word with you.

Oculus was (is?) $349 for the full motion controller package and comes with like 10 games. PSVR is also $349 for the full motion controller package and comes with 1 game. Meanwhile the Oculus hardware is objectively superior to PSVR, particularly the tracking quality and functionality of the motion controllers. HTC definitely shit the bed though with that Black Friday price hike bundle, but they're a terribly run and managed company anyways so no surprise there.

Kind of off topic, but as someone who has been a VR advocate since the beginning, it's great to see the general conversation about VR change. As little as a year ago, it was met with major scrutiny and terrible comparisons to kinect and 3D TV's, as time goes on those people are becoming less and less. "He's beginning to believe."

You did read the OP, yeah?

Clearly people are buying VR currently (in healthy numbers none the less) and they're not going to stop just because technology will improve over time.

Going by your reasoning, nobody would be buying anything tech related because a better version will come along eventually, but clearly that's not the way this works.

The people who bought VR already aren't going to be buying a new version any time soon, and the people who haven't bough VR are waiting until it's actually decent which will take awhile. In the meantime, who is left to buy it?

Maybe I'm wrong and somehow new people will become interested, but I think the fad is over already...

And healthy numbers? Less than 3% of PS4 owners own a PSVR, how is that healthy?

Considering the price and the tech, Sony will be happy with these numbers.

In VR we are still in early early days.

At £150/$170 these things will fly off the shelves, and it has a good future.

There needs to be the install base so sony will put in the same investment for VR titles as they do for TLOU2,GOW,UC4 etc.

3d games on a 2d screen dont work to well in VR, VR games need to be designed solely for VR.

No shit, dude. VR is a new medium, not just peripheral device...it requires extra time and effort to create content for. The investment isn't there for AAA games yet, that's how these things work at the beginning.

But that doesn't matter right now. There's a growing niche and VR offers something 2D games never will. That's why it will stay, that's why it will grow, and that's why you're wrong.

Edit: The big picture for these companies should be setting a framework for emerging technology so when it does blow up, they're in the lead and can make more money. 2 million 3-400 dollar devices isn't chump change, Sony has clearly said they're taking notice of the high demand, and the software attachment rate is very healthy and suggests people want more. Try taking a look at the details rather than lumping some random facts into your opinion about VR.
