Does Netflix censor R Rated movies? (instantwatch)

OK I've had Netflix instant watch for a few months but I've only used it a few times so I'm not very knowledgeable on their policies. I had some busy work to do to night, and I figured I'd put on a trashy R-Rated 70's movie on to keep me entertained.


I tried watching The Van and Van Nuys Blvd. I stopped watching The Van when I notice that some profane words were obviously being censored, and During Van Nuys Blvd a character is about to get mooned on the street but the scene cut abruptly.

What the hell?! Both movies are clearly rated "R" How can you have a movie listed as Rated R and then cut all of the adult stuff out?

As far as I know netflix does not censor anything they put up. You can watch borderline porn on there. Not that I would know or anything...

Netflix doesn't censor anything as far as I'm aware. Maybe the distributor, for some odd reason, gave them censored versions of those films on accident?

I'm in college and a bunch of my friends (and I) just bum off our parent's accounts. I've heard some horribly awkward stories where someone will forget they're on a family account, watch something... racy, and hear about when their dad goes to watch something and see it under Recently Watched.

This sounds right to me--Netflix probably just puts up whatever version of titles they're given, and if they're given the TV edit of a film, the TV edit goes up. They put up tons of stuff that makes it clear they're not actively censoring, but I'm guessing they don't devote a lot of time to making sure they have the full versions of everything they stream.

I once watched a legit lesbian porno on Netflix either last year or earlier this year. Like really, it was stuck in between being softcore and hardcore porn.

Also saw a French movie that had bush and ass.

Netflix puts up whatever they get, as mentioned.

Example: Family Guy and American Dad are censored, in some cases more than on TV (the word "masterbate" was censored, for instance). Comedy Central content (e.g. South Park) is mostly uncensored, but some sexually explicit visuals in Drawn Together are censored, IIRC saying only on DVD. (They do the same censoring when it airs during late late nights.)

Heh, I just saw that play out last night with my niece and brother-in-law. "Who watched this centipede thing?" My sister was wondering what all the fuss was that made it so bad, and I was afraid I was going to have dive to cover the ears of my elementary school age kids.

I know there are re-written versions of some FOX shows to make it more... I guess youth-friendly. For example, I saw an episode of Family Guy once on CW which had many small edits. One example is a line that's normally "Do you know what would come out if I masterbated? A little flag with the word 'BANG' on it" which was edited to "Do you know how many sperm I have? One." At least Netflix doesn't have those copies. lol.

Yeah, and they can fuck things up too.

I remember when they had Gurren Lagann on there, they accidentally had one episode uploaded twice, and the episode that should've been uploaded in place of the duplicate episode included the most crucial plot twist in the show (
Kamina's death
). So anybody watching the show the first time would be confused, surprised, and distraught as fuck if they decided to just skip the episode and move on to the next one.

I've seen weirdly censored stuff on Netflix instant as well as stuff that's been time compressed - a bunch of stuff was cut out of Battlestar Galactica episodes for example.

I've never noticed anything censored except the occasional TV show. But I think those were edited by the content owner.

I remember watching a movie on netflix in the xbox party with like 6 people lol. When me and a few others noticed 2 of our friends were sleep we put it on porn and left the party. One of them got in trouble because his mom walked in his room while it was on and he was asleep lol!
