Taco Deli > Torchy's

BlE9mnn.gif

Taco Deli has tasty breakfast tacos--but nothing beats Torchy's menu. I eat there at least twice a week.

Also, just found this thread. I might be able to make the Saturday meetup.

Taco Deli is mediocre vanilla tex mex tacos

Taco Shack is worse.

Torchys is fine. Mostly for the unique tacos.

Stop going where white people go for tacos, shit.

Edit: ACL is dead. Its as interesting as the beer sponsors smh

Yeah, the lineup is not as good as last year. Florence, Deadmau5, and Bassnectar are the only reasons I'm going.

Madness

The headliners are weaker, but I think the rest of the line-up is stronger than last year. Tame Impala, Gary Clark, Jr., Royal Blood, for example. Worth it for me.

hope to move up to Austin some time in 2015 with all the cool kids

Yo, JC! You totally should!

Well, don't be a dick. Where do YOU go for tacos?

Most of my taco consumption is from taco trucks. The big ones that go around construction sites. Don't know any of them by name. Mostly because I don't think they use any.

Outside of that I highly highly recommend going to Mi Tradicion (I think there was a name change since it was formerly known as Chuy's Bakery). It's really fucking good.

A lot of the places I liked have closed/moved. Botanitas was awesome. They served you like 12 different salsas when you sat down.

Since my family lives in Round Rock, we've been going to Juarez Bakery for a while now too.

Theres this really really good taco stand in front of the American Bingo on Riverside. Dont know the name.

I don't know why people go out to some place like Taco Deli or Juan in a Million when there plenty of family owned Mexican/Central American restaurants. You just have to try them.

For upscale Mexican, people like Fonda de San Miguel. It's good but not my preference. I don't really try upscale Mexican restaurants.

A friend of the family owns a not-upscale-but-not-a-corner-restaurant place right next to the Broken Spoke. Im not 100% sure that its still there but if you want to try authentic you can try there.

Also, if you guys find yourselves in the Round Rock area and hungry for Indian food, go to Tejis. Really good food.

Alright those are most of my recommendations.

Definitely add Moonshine Grill to the bar and grill OP. It's a very Austiny grill in downtown, and I haven't eaten a platter from there that I didn't like. Also, drink a couple of blind mule's if you want to have a good time.

Ah yes, good place. I'm not a fan of the actual Moonshine though. It's like bad vodka :/
Sarcasm aside, Takoba on the east side has really good tex-mex. Really good.
Went there for the World Cup final and had a blast. There was a group of Brazilians jamming out the entire time <3

Saturday is possible for me, by the way. It just depends on how busy work is. I'd have to go home and change, so twilight is about the time I start my daydrinking.

Keep the thread posted. Pinballz is always fun, Rainy Street is amazing during sunset/before dark, and food is always good. Presuming I don't get my ass destroyed at work I'll probably be up for it.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to try this place! I'll add.

We should probably decide what we want to do this Saturday. Our options, as far as I can tell, are

Pinballz
Emerald Tavern
Rainy Street
Random other pub/bar/drink spots

Anyone have other suggestions or suggestions I missed? We should nail probably nail it down sooner rather than later so everyone doesn't bail out at the last minute. :p

A few of my favorite places in Austin aren't in the OP. : |

La Barbecue's brisket is every bit as great as Franklin's, the sausage is better, and I've never waited more than 45 minutes. That's better than the alternative of a couple hours for Franklin's.

Draught House Pub, Easy Tiger, The Mean Eyed Cat, and Banger's Sausage House and Beer Garden are great bars to hang out with great food.

Red's Porch, Hula Hut, and The County Line on Bee Cave have some of the best views in Austin and good drinks/apps (eat your main course somewhere else).

Perla's and Clark's Oyster Bar are fantastic seafood.

Casino El Camino has one of the best burgers in Austin and it's a really unique setting. Yes, the wait can be very long, but it's worth it.

Texas Honey Ham Company have THE best breakfast tacos and sandwiches. They also have my favorite pulled pork sandwich.

The Picnic food trailer park on Barton Springs is amazing. Hey You Gonna Eat or What?!, Chi-Lantro, Kebabalicious, and Turf n Surf Po' Boy have some of the best food in Austin.

Jack Allen's Kitchen is great American cooking and also has one the best brunch buffets in Austin, right up there with Moonshine. Jack started Z'Tejas, which is also great Tex-Mex.

Dolce Neve (gelato), Lick Honest Ice Creams, and Amy's Ice Cream are amazing.

Additionally, if you're going to list Texas State History Museum you should also list The Blanton Museum of Art, which is right across the street with an impressive collection.

Thanks for the recs, I appreciate it! For me, it's really just convenience. I live 50 yards from a Torchy's and there is one right in the area I go to lunch.

My problem is also that, once I find something I like, I'm fine with sticking with that reliability. Therefore, trashy Trailer Parks every week, son.

I've had Franklin's catered at my job, twice, and don't see what the big deal is. Unless they completely change the way they prep/cook their meat for in-restaurant vs catering, I was underwhelmed, in fact. The brisket WAS very tender, but everything else was just "eh", especially the sausage.

La Barbecue is delicious, but I'll also just go to one of the Black's we have, too, for their brisket. There was another spot a bit up north (like, north of Austin, not just North Austin) that I went to with some friends that has excellent brisket...I think it was one of the Mueller's...

Man, I just realized I haven't been to Casino el Camino in YEARS. That's depressing.

Ugh, just got my apartment renewal letter, they are jacking my rent up from 877 to 1050. That's just madness. This housing market is starting to piss me off. But I guess I'm part of the problem I'm one of the people that moved here 7 years ago, but I don't make the tech sector kinda money...

Yikes. Austin already has some of the most expensive rent in the state. I hope Austin doesn't suffer from the same tech bubble affecting housing in San Fran. That would really hurt.

Where do you live? Rent prices were one of the big reasons I decided to buy as quickly as I could. Way earlier than I was expecting, but god damn it's nice to have a monthly mortgage that doesn't randomly change over the course of a year.

The housing market is super competitive here so the cost to rent (a house) likes to jump up in those hot areas. My neck of the woods (the north-side) is starting to feel it, too.

La Barbecue is amazing. My typical BBQ place has become Terry Black's. Really good and you can get it any time of the day without waiting in a ridiculous line.

I've been to a lot of the places listed in this thread, but I might need to try a few more.

I'm over off east oltorf/wickersham/pleasant valley area. I know the area is getting more of a rejuvination lately so they probably think they can get away with charging that much ugh.

Buying is eventually in my plan but I don't even have savings at the moment, let alone 30k for a down payment

Hey I live in san marcos and could use some new friends! If there's a meet up I'm down to go!

Hey there! We've been really bad at meeting up but we're trying to change that soon.

I'm gonna tentatively say we're going to do Pinballz this Saturday because it's the most obvious for us (and it worked a few times for us before). If you have a better idea or are really want to do something else, speak up. I don't think anyone has strong opinions on the matter, so we're pretty much down for whatever, within reason.

Damn you all indecisive Austin-GAF!

I'm going to be out of town this weekend anyway, so I can't be there, but some time I would like to come to one of these AustinGAF meetups.

I could probably do Saturday.. it doesn't look like anything is on my calendar. Pinballz works for me although I'd also be happy to meet somewhere in South Austin where I live (can't necessarily think of a great spot like Pinballz though so I don't have a better suggestion personally). Whatever works for the group!

Torchy's was a disappointment for sure.

Torchy's is legit flawless. And their chips and queso.. untouchable.

I'm ok with Pinballz, and one of my mates might come with me.

Speaking of Torchy's queso, the Drafthouse decided to redo their queso recipe and asked for suggestions. Naturally everyone recommended Torchy's so they used it as their new inspiration. Had it when we went to see Avengers and their version is pretty similar.. and they use El Milagro's thin chips too so it's a solid option. Costs about $6.

Think they just redid their menu too. Guy told me on the 12th they were rolling out the new one.

Am I the only one that thinks Serrano's has the best beef fajitas in town? And I love everything about that place: the chips, salsa, rice and re-fried beans. The flour tortillas are not as good as they were several years ago, but they are still better than most other tex-mex restaurants. The south Mopac-290 location is my favorite place.

Hmmm not sure I usually make my own fajitas :D

I'm with you.

I live less than 5 minutes from that Serrano's. I usually get a to-go order once every other week or so.

Breakfast tacos > Every other type of taco

IDK, a red snapper taco from Turf n Surf ranks right up there with the best breakfast tacos for me.

The ?th Annual Austin-GAF Meetup

Saturday, May 16th 8:00 PM
Pinballz Arcade

BYOB if you'd like.

I'll probably be available in the afternoon if some you guys want to meet up sooner (at the arcade, or food, or whatever). I live up by Parmer/Mopac for the record. Also, if anyone needs a ride or anything, let's try to co-ordinate.

Edit: had plans for the early afternoon. Likely don't anymore due to rain. I'm free all day Sat now, if people want to get together beforehand.

I'd probably try to go earlier, I don't exactly have a car. I'd be taking buses. Lol. Which reminds me... I should probably get my certificate of $100 back by Saturday. <.<

How many people will be attending this event?

I count 8 who've expressed interest. So probably two LOL jk.
Or am I?

Honestly though, if someone needs a ride we may be able to make it work, depending on the time. I'll pm you.

That's a 25 minute bike ride for me, so not too bad. I'll plan on 8pm, but if there are any pre-game activities I'd be up for that too.
