Yakuza Community Thread - FEEL THE HEAT!

I haven't finished yet, but the pacing is much better than Y4 and Y5.

The thing is, learning skills is tied to money and you need lots of it to get even the intermediate abilities. And since you are carrying ridiculous amounts of money, everything from minigames is opened right away.

There's also a ton of sidequests and minigames that give a lot of money, so it's really easy to get sidetracked on those. Take that out and the main story pacing is much better than previous main titles.

I think that is the problem from the multi protagonists system, The pacing of the main plot is terrible in RGG5. I remember the stories as a taxi driver, hunter and ex baseball player well but don't remember the main story at all.

I've not had any pacing issues with Yakuza 0, definitely seems better than 5 in that respect since when you start getting somewhere in 5, it'll probably cut to a new character shortly. Repeat twice and then Haruka who is at a different pace entirely, then repeat again etc. Not complaining per se, I loved 5 but this definitely seems better in that regard.

I've just completed chapter 6 in 0, which
throws you into a huge street brawl, ending in an awesome boss battle in the sewers. So badass, I'd leveled Kiryu up enough that I had some really awesome moves to use in the battles so I enjoyed it immensely.
That's why I love the combat in this series - its fairly balanced between being easy to pick up and pretty flashy with some more useful advanced moves (like counters) if you take the time to learn the timings.

I also completed the Baseball mini game, really easy this time around (for the first time in the entire series!). My only question for those that have played the game is - When you win/lose a mini game like Baseball or Bowling that involves gambling your own money, you get a screen after the mini game ends where the game displays stats. Does anyone have a translation of what the last stat shown is? Its some kind of total amount of money you've won/lost in mini games I'm assuming? As that total amount doesn't come close to the actual amount of money I currently own. Sorry for the lack of pictures, the game doesn't let me take screenshots until premium adventure mode...

I agree. Everytime you change characters in Y4 or Y5, you start from zero and the pacing goes to hell. You get to the good parts only to be thrown at another beginning.

In Y0 they were smarted and you see Kiryu and Majima story progressing together, instead of seeing one story and then the other. Much better this way and both storylines complement each other.

There are actually very few quests that reward you with money (or anything really). It makes sense of course, random salary man or kid isn't going to reward you with a billion yen for finding his dog or buying a porn magazine. But this is another aspect of the game I didn't like, there is no reason to do sidequests beyond experiencing hilarious situations. I love Zero, but I sure as hell am glad that this money = exp thing is limited to this game because of its theme, it does only bad things to gameplay systems.

Side quests do unlock staff for Night Club and money island.

Does anyone have any idea how oicho kabu works? I mean, I can get to the 10,000 if I keep throwing money at it...but as of right now, i am just randomly choosing stuff and hoping for the best. Something about everything has to equal 9, but if I see 9's, i usually lose.

Edit: I think I kind of get it actually now. Its an over complicated Blackjack

If you've not already got the hang of it - If your playing as a "player" your cards have to add up to as high number as possible (with 9 being the highest number). You can draw a total of 3 cards, if you have an "8" for example and draw a card which has the value "3" then your total loops round to "1". So its very risky drawing another card if you've already got a high total. You have to draw a minimum of two cards. You are playing against the dealer - you only have to beat his hand, it doesn't matter what the other players get.

Every four turns you will be the dealer/banker. Your aim is to get a higher total than the other players. For every player your hand beats, you win more points.

After a few wins I believe you should unlock a higher difficulty that lets you bet more money/chips. This lets you complete the mini game faster. Koi Koi is the same way, only I found that way more complicated as the hands are harder to recognise, I did get it down eventually.

The Japanese gambling games are really fun I found, my favourite by far being Mah Jong. The trophies/completion percentage attached to the game makes it a great motivator to learn the rules etc. of the games. If only Shogi made any sense to me...

golf is now the one thing keeping me from getting mini game master. I feel like I have 0 control over what happens. I would honestly rather go back and do ex hard batting cages or pool again. Best I have done in several hours of trying is -2

Golf was one of my favourites, I managed that one after a little practice. Its the putting that always caught me out though, since it was what always screwed me over in the beginning,

Once you have the ball on the green I seem to recall you could press the triangle button which changes the maximum range of your putt. I found that insanely useful when it came to putting. Plus there's all the pain in the ass stuff about contours, slopes etc. on the green. I can't offer any advice about that, its really down to practice and (in my opinion) a bit of luck.

Weirdly, I always had issues with Yakuza 4's golf. Again, it was the putting, and I think they made some tweaks to the hud that made it really difficult (for me at least) working out how far my putt would go. Then Dead Souls seemingly fixed that as I never had any issues with Golf in Dead Souls.

So I just started playing Yakuza 1, my first Yakuza game, and I'm loving it.
I would like to have a complete experience so, is there any sort of guide to not lose anything important, like quest or secondary stuff?

I don't have a good guide handy, but there's definitely interesting side stories you can miss/fail.

All I can say is there's a point where a character invites you to meet with them, but another characters warns that it's likely a trap. You should definitely go.

Noted, it totally doesn't sound like a trap :)

Yakuza 1&2 both have side missions that are rather strict on fail conditions. Plus certain ones prevents other side missions from starting, and in turn prevents you from fighting the hidden boss battles. Gamefaqs user ThePatrick created brilliant guides for those games (plus 3, 4 and Kenzan!) and are absolutely worth checking out.

Yakuza 1 side quests are a bit rough. I remember not finding much of them and coming across many npcs asking for items i didnt have. Id recommend not worrying too much about the side quests in 1. The structure and quality of them really started in the second game and really esculated with 3.

While they aren't as good as later games, I'd still suggest doing them since I really liked the
side mission(s) where you had Haruka with you. Plus the battle against the bar keeper and bouncer was a pretty cool battle. Plus wasn't there a side mission that directly dealt with the fake Mizuki? Oh and not to forget Akimoto (who I sorely miss in the newer games).

Has anyone beaten the fifth Billionaire in the Money Island storyline in RGG0?

Just got to him and didn't save for an hour before doing so - because he'd be as easy as the rest of the stupid Billionaires right? Wrong. Good thing I didn't actually do anything for that hour except money grind.

Feel like I'm missing something for this fight. I'm at chapter 10 and have almost all the skills for the Chimpira style unlocked so don't think I'm too far behind, but dude just dodges and knocks me down over and over.

Have been busy lately so haven't been replying to this thread as much, but yeah to remember anything about Oicho-Kabu is that like Baccarat, you are trying to get to a 9 as close as possible and with 2-3 cards, so say have a 10 and a 4 card, that would be 14 but the 10 would be ignored so you have 4, which you can stay with or ask for another card and hope you can get close to a 9, but you can't draw with the dealer, so if you both got a 9, the dealer still wins which is good if you're the dealer(when its your turn), other than that I think you can win if you get 3 of a kind or lose if you get an 8, a 9 and a 3 which spells "Ya Ku Za" ironically. Check out Barticle's guide on the minigames of the Yakuza games for more information.

Yeah the substories in Yakuza 1 and 2 are pretty strict in terms of completion in that many can be missed entirely how you respond to a question someone is asking you and then they're are chain based stories if you missed a certain part you wouldn't be able to complete the whole thing, so would often pay attention to what people are saying and not mashing through and accidentally choose the wrong response.

Yes I recommend Thepatrick's guides for these games if you are having trouble, especially on the Japanese versions or the JP only releases like Kenzan though there's an error for the "Today's excuses" substory for Kenzan, the responses would be
2, 3, 1, 1, 1

If I remember that's the Entertainment King, the one who you have to beat in a dance off in the Maharajah and then have to fight in the Shichifuku St. Carpark right?

I remember him being pretty dodge-y but not overly annoying to deal with, he was mostly coming in for attacks and eating counters from the counter hook, throws are also good for stopping him from moving around too much.

Course the ultra cheap way of dealing with him just use guns, like 2-3 broken m1985 or if you unlocked the higher based shotguns would do him in pretty quick but then again its cheap.

FINALLY

one of the most frustrating and challenging completions I have ever done. Will probably be a long while before I start playing 4 or dead souls lol

I just started playing Yakuza 3, my first game in the series, and OMFG I didn't know what I was missing. I've had a habit lately of finding amazing games about 5 years after they came out.

For people who 100%'ed Yakuza 3, approx how many hours did it take you? There's so many mini games, I'm not sure if I can justify doing all of them.

probably around 200 hours or a little bit more.

The steps I took were

Beat the game on Hard(do all side missions, revelations, if7, essentially everything)
Ultimate skill challenge thing
Mini games
Ex Hard mode(the easiest step with golden gun)

playing through the series.

I'm about halfway through 2 and just got the hostess club. kinda hooked to managing it.

I loved that side mission. I also really enjoyed the host club side mission in Yakuza 2 as well. Both are really fully fleshed out and kept me playing for hours. Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 also has a fully fleshed out hostess management club side mission that was sadly cut from the English release. I really enjoyed it when I played through my Japanese copy of 3.

RGG0 though has my favourite hostess club management game. Its way easier to understand thanks to most of it being either in English, or uses sign language/symbols so its way easier to understand what you need to do. Its also insanely addictive, I've spent the last 10 odd hours playing this mode! I've not actually advanced Majima's story since starting this mode.

Well, just finished Yakuza 0 after a loong time and this game is amazing.

Story, I think it's one of the best and the pacing is much, much better than Y4 and Y5.

The different battle styles are great, but I think Dancer with Majima is way too strong, while rush/quick (dont remember the name) with Kiryu is useless. Also, you need waaay too much money to level up.

Pray that this game gets a US release. It's great.

How did you cope with the language barrier?

Are there any decent translations online?

Translations wise I've personally been using the following for my playthrough of 0:

http://www.khhsubs.com/ is working on a guide. By the time its done it should be the go-to place for the game. For now its an excellent resource that covers the money island and night island side missions along with decent detail on abilities, training and some side missions.

https://translate.google.com/transl...tp://spwiki.net/ryuzero/index.html&edit-text=
This is a Google translation of the Japanese wiki guide for the game. Some of the translations aren't perfect but for the most part its an excellent tool for the game.

Salty Yen's channel on Youtube is great to get an idea of what the main story is about. He does a "lets play" where he translates as he plays which is really useful.

In my case, I studied japanese enough so I can understand most of the story.

ShadowMan already pointed out KHHSubs, I was using their maps for Money Island and I checked their guide for Ishin, after finishing the game, and it also seems great for people that doesn't understand nothing of japanese.

I still believe we will see Yakuza 0 localized, but for Ishin and Kenzan, better use those guides.

So it's sounding like the Yakuza team is working on a new project that isn't Yakuza. Which is sad but exciting at the same time. We all know how talented this team is and giving them a shot at another new IP could be a great thing. I just hope the protagonist is older like Kiryu.

Pulled from a blog but i'm not fluent in Japanese so I'm not going to make a thread. Would be great if someone here could give more insight into the interview.

I am not fluent, but as far as I understood, there isn't any real info about it. It just says that the Yakuza studio doesn't only make Yakuza games and that their new project has no connection to the Yakuza series.

Last time they did that was Binary Domain and it was AMAZING.

Yea, it's great to hear that they're woking on something different. I love me some Kiryu antics but a good break is needed every now and then.

Personally I was worried that after Binary Domain's performance we wouldn't see another new IP from them, though I do love that game.

I saw that and it does indeed bode well.

Satomi Jr talking about focusing on quality Japanese games and maybe an announcement at TGS has me excited. The interview also apparently said they're looking to recruit for high end game development (So we know it's not just a mobile game ha!) with a team number of 150 and counting. (That's third or fourth largest at SEGA behind Creative Assembly, Relic and PSO2 Sonic Team.)

This would have been likely the case if they didn't cut down everything and then found massive success in mobile at the same time. For once the consumer division is having a good deal of growth.

A non Yakuza game would be ok by me. I loved Binary Domain - the story was ace and I loved the damage you could inflict on the robots (targeting specific areas etc.) I'd love for them to try their hand at something else, I'd buy it for sure.

Makes me wonder if there won't be a Yakuza announcement this year? Its the 10 year anniversary so it'd be kind of strange for it to be absent, but taking a year or two out to develop a new sequel would also be worthwhile for the series. It'd give the team the time they need to make an amazing Yakuza 6, and give the West a chance to catch up on Yakuza 5 (and hopefully 0).

Maybe we'll get a new Yakuza late next year with a December release date? I've noticed a trend of 3 Yakuza games before the engine is updated and the newest release gets updated from 1 > Kenzan = 3, 3 > Dead Souls = 5 and 5 > 0 = ?

The new project might be an excuse to update the engine for the next major Yakuza game, also helps that the Playstation 4 might have a respectable install base by then thanks to stuff like Dragon Quest 11, Builders etc + another million or so in China. Better to experiment with a new major IP that can grab the Western sales I guess.

Yeah, I can see them using this new game as an excuse to build a new engine for a proper PS4 Yakuza game. I really do wonder how awesome a sequel would look that is tailored for the PS4 and not just an up port of the PS3 version (though Ishin and 0 are really smooth, so I'm not really complaining!).

One small detail I do want in any new Yakuza game is an arcade on par with 0's. I can't go back, having classic Sega games in the arcade has become a massive time sink, I'd never touched Fantasy Zone or Super Hang On before and am hooked on both now. 5 is a step in the right direction as well - Taiko Drum Master rocks and VF2 of course is fantastic. Actually, throw Daytona, Super Monkey Ball and Outrun 2 in the next Yakuza arcade, I'd never finish the game if they did include it!

Oh man I really hope that their upcoming game lays down the groundwork for a PS4 engine.
Also I hope that the Figmas of Majima and Kiryu look great

My aunt is in Japan at the moment and she just picked both Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Ishin for me :D. Very happy gamer right now. Can't wait for her to return ^.^ maybe I should see if she can find a copy of Yakuza 1 & 2 HD.

Yeah, I think 0 is at least part of the 10 year thing, but I'd have hoped they would have done something really spectacular to further the series. Basically I want something that takes place after 5 that launches a new chapter in the series. But at least 0 is shaping up to be the best of the bunch, so I won't be that disappointed if its the only thing we get out of the anniversary.

I'm also making great headway with the original Outrun, which is odd as I've always been rubbish at it. I can pretty much 1cc one route now, route B seems the best for me, as the second stage of route A is a pig to complete for some reason. I blame the winding roads, sharp turns and pillars on either side of the road.
