Cuphead |OT| 2 Cups 1 Screen

I think some people are getting a little sore about an OP weapon. It appears the game's designer is saying it's too strong. How can you disagree with that?

Damn King Dice is just beating me down.

Is it just pure timing and patience to parry the dice at the perfect time to get the roll you want? That's probably the party I'm struggling with the most, trying to make it through 4 or 5 bosses before I even get to him.

Not quite. It’s not so much that they’re wrong but that we think there are better alternatives. Nerfing the power affects play style using said weapon. There are stats being tossed around how the damage output should be reduced relative to the current output but if said new proposed output is marginally stronger than any other weapon on the menu, then you risk adhering to the same play style as those other weapons which is wrong.

Who are you to tell a developer that what they plan to do to their game is wrong?

I'm still stuck on that dragon, beat him on simple and beat the pirate for a palate cleanser but that damn last stage of Match stick, the flame thrower always blasts me when I'm trying to find a footing and sprays instantly. There doesn't seem enough time to correct myself and jump up or down to avoid it.

maybe use the invincibility super on that phase

With enough practice (and concentration), you can get the exact roll that you want. Although I find it that with enough bad luck, you'll get the hang of all the mini bosses which are pretty easy to deal only to be despair at King Dice if you don't have at least 3 lives to get the hang of his attack pattern.

Who's "we"? You're pretty much the only person I've seen to flat out disagree with one of the game's creators about how their game is balanced.

Your alternatives are unreasonable. Do you have any idea how hard it would be to rebalance every single boss on a case by case basis? To retest every single Phase with every single weapon? Just for the sake of keeping one weapon untouched? And Teeth already went very in depth with the issues involved with bringing the other weapons up to the Charge's output.

The Charge shot does not work with the game design as intended. It is going to be nerfed. Case closed.

Again, in response to your quotes, because there is a profound lack of reading going on here, I never made the case to match other weapons to the same damage output as the charge's, so the crux of his essay in response to me was off on the wrong foot.

This is not hard. All I've suggested is to ultimately do nothing and find nothing wrong with it and to address these problems in a future game but asserted that if something is done, alternatives be considered. I don't think your reasons to not consider them reduce them to being unreasonable. I'm not the one here complaining about how broken the game is and people are jumping on me for it, which is utterly bizarre. I'm not the one here complaining about how chunks of a battle don't pass the 10 second mark. I'm not the one here suggesting that the players be punished for not adhering to how you want them to play.

You used ”players" , as in plural, in your last post so I assumed I wasn't the only one you saw defend the game as it is. Others have also voiced that there's nothing wrong with the charge and have expressed why nerfing it affects play style.

I'm moving on from this point of topic. I'm tired of seeing people nag about how the charge shot breaks the game.

Very well then. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. Truce?

More bosses than expected in World 3. I'm still loving it, but the damage reduction balance for co-op makes that mode rough for some fights if you're not "Shinji & Asuka & classical music" synchronized.

I think co op I'm general is the real expert mode.

Was the
Queen Bee
ridiculously easy for anyone else? After taking like 30 attempts to beat the
Pirate ship
I beat her in maybe 6 attempts?
It was the opposite for me. I think I beat the ship on my 3rd or 4th try; the bee took me forever, mainly because I didn't realize how her 3rd form worked (I thought the firsts she shoots out were homing; it turns out they just happened to move the same direction I had been moving during all of my attempts).

Of the Isle 3 bosses, I think the easiest was the mouse. Got to the final stage on my first try and beat it on my second.

I am seriously struggling with the flying Bosses in World three, just tooooo many projectiles on screen at the one time. I'm refusing to watch any YouTube videos though so I'll just keep plugging away :(

I definitely found the world 3 flying bosses to be more difficult than they were on World 1 or 2 (on second thought, I had a hell of a time with both World 2 bosses - the game is becoming a blur in my mind). I had my finger (buttons re-mapped so dash was on the triggers) hovering over dash/shrink the entirety of those fights. Use it liberally to shrink as needed - I was constantly shrinking and growing all the time in order to put myself where I needed to be. After that it's just pattern recognition, and careful use of EX/supers, just like all the other bosses.

For the Robot, in phase 1 I destroyed the 3 attack areas, then saved my super bomb to finish that phase. Then banked my ex bombs to launch as soon as I got them in phase 3.

For Cala Maria, once I learned how to deal with the horse/water attacks in phase 1 I had a much easier time with her. In phase 2 I spent equal time trying to shoot her, and trying to kill the other enemies on screen so there would be less projectiles flying around.

Not a fan of this dice non sense in Inkwell Hell. Why ruin something good?

EDIT: After playing again and again it clicked, this might be one of the best parts of the game.

It's a string of very simple bosses and a single segment in the final battle.
I had to do it several times, but you'll quickly be able to roll the die to the number of your choice. Then, once you figure out that you should dash in the air/parry on King Dice's cards, you'll soon win. Did I die to pretty much every mini boss on that track? Yes. But because they're shorter, with no transformations, you learn them pretty quick.

I really like it. Reminds me of going across the bridge in Super Mario Bros 3 hoping not to land on that hand that comes up and grabs you into a level.

Finished the game today with my bro.

It was a really good fun from start to end. Easily in my top3 of the year with Persona 5 and Hollow Knight.

This was one of the more anticipated games of the year and it didn't dissapoint. Also really happy for the good sales numbers. Definitely deserved.

For me it was one of the best parts of the game, if not the best. It added a much needed ... something else to the usual routine and I had fun timing my parries just right, so I could get all 3 extra lives.

Just finished the game last night, it was one the most satisfying gaming experiences I have had all year. Really looking forward to whatever these talented devs make next.

Yea it's growing on me. Getting easier.

It's a very well executed homage to Gunstar Heroes without sacrificing its own identity. The constituent bosses are not difficult and once you've played them a few times you can breeze through the required three minibosses in three minutes. I think it's great.

Yea just said above it's growing on me, I like the challenge of getting to Kind Dice at full + bonus health.

I shit you not, it took me a while to figure out the dice wouldn’t hit me. Until then I was jumping before parrying and I sucked at getting the number I wanted. Then I realized it wouldn’t hurt me and it was super easy with a bit of practice.

Can't you endlessly resurrect each other in co-op too?

I haven't played co-op yet.
You can, but you come back with 1hp, so what this usually results in is one player dying, the other player resurrects them, dying in turn, and it just starts a chain until you're both dead (for us anyway). There's also other confusing things in co-op, like when both players try to parry the same thing and one of them misses, the parry hit pause, and the way bosses change who they're targeting.

When it comes to getting A ranks, Co-op is definitely harder because of the HP bonus, since it counts against damage you both take (as in, you will get 0/3 for the HP bonus if you take 3 hits between the both of you). We've had a couple of runs where we struggled for 20+ minutes trying to A rank a boss only to get it on the first or second try solo.

I think this is one of the few games where co-op somehow makes the game more difficult.

Finally beat them! :)

Countless deaths and retries but I got there. Now onto the Dice King.....

Learning how to Parry the dice rolls was ez. Don't try to jump on top of them when you Perry but Perry as you're jumping upward.

Now the last phase of King dice? That's hard. If not for the extra lives, I'm not sure if I would have beaten him.

Ultimately I ended up playing World 3 all on "simple," skipping the run and gun levels, and basically considering the game "finished" as it stands.

The Level 2 airplane stages finally broke me. The plane stages were never fun for me, and the constant deaths in those 2 levels killed any enjoyment I was getting from the rest of the game.

Then all the talk about weapon nerfs finally made me decide its time to just have whatever fun I can and drop it. Its hard enough for me as it was, haha.

It would be nice to play the casino and officially complete it, but Ill never get there.
Oh well, I got 10 hours out of it.

maybe use the invincibility super on that phase

I finally beat him with Invincible super! I tried that a couple of times before but it always ran out while I was in a storm of fire and bullets making it a bit useless. This time I just went all out and kept using my charge shot on him while I was invincible.

Now to hit my head over and over again on that damn Bee.

Really started to struggle with Isle 3 and set it down for a few days. Picked it back up last night and went on a tear through all the bosses here. Something just clicked for me with the game and had the most fun I had with it thus far. Trying to beat the last boss tonight and finish it out.

Jump in the moment when the number you want to hit disappears from the front side of the dice, then parry. I hit the right number 95% of the time.

Take the 2,5,8 route. (You can restart until you get at least 2 hearts on 2,5 or 8.)
With 2,5,8 you don't need the smoke bomb, so you can use the extra-heart.

Finish 8 only with the homing shot, that way your super meter is filled for the fight against King Dice.

Good luck.

This is a fucking amazing piece of advice. Works 99% of the time.

Keep dying practising is the only way. If the pink cards are quite far apart, dash to it after parry.

You can also parry the same card to buy yourself a bit of time to safely parry the other pink cards although it does throw off your timing if you're not used to the battle yet.

If you're using the lobber and roundabout, you can take out King Dice after roughly three waves of the cards attack. If in doubt, the invicibility power are useful as you can safely damage King Dice during the wave of cards..

The game is certainly difficult, but I am loving every second of it. The presentation, the music, great bosses and run levels. Studio MDHR delivered a masterpiece.

I've cleared 3 bosses (robot, bee and stage lady) in island three. I can't play every day, I get too stressed. What an amazing game though.

Frankly, the robot is as hard as the game gets, you shouldn't have much problems with the remaining bosses.
