Otome Community Thread: Happiness isn't a limited commodity, my love is boundless!

So I plan on buying both Norn9 and Code: Realize, one at a time. My priorities are story > length, so, based on that, which should I buy first, with the thought of saving the better for last?

Code Realize has the better story, Norn9 has the better romance. They're both about the same length.

How fleshed out is the romance in Norn9? With 9 guys to write for, I wouldn't have thought any would be particularly well-written.

Not all the routes are great, but there are a few ones that manages to make romance the centerpiece compared to Code Realize.

I'm currently playing Hakuoki but I think Gintama has ruined it for me; I had no idea Kondou, Hijikata and Okita were based on historical figures!

Not really, no.

Thanks :)

...it's an anime, too?
*and then everyone learned/remembered something new!*

Haha yeah! I'm making my brother watch it with me cos it's sports related! I didn't mention to him that it's based on an otome game :p Hey, he watched Free with me and like it, should be fine XD

My boyfriend's sister had a similar reaction. Was getting curious about stuff from Hakuoki because of Okita without realising they were based on a real person. It would probably be fine going from Hakuoki -> Gintama but I think the other way round just doesn't work hey!

(Slightly off topic but the dumbest versions of the Shinsengumi/Sakamoto and co I've come across is Bakumatsu Rock).

So no new otome games were announced by Idea Factory International. Maybe they will later, but honestly I was kind of hoping to the point of expecting at least one title.

Ah well, I have some otome backlog that'll get me through for a while at least. Still didn't start Reine des Fleurs, those 40 bad endings are putting me off so much lmao.

Collar x Malice is shaping up nicely too, they added a new CG yesterday. Art is so nice and the story seems interesting too.

They apparently had Amnesia goodies at the press event, and they told ones of the attendees that they should give them a list of the otome games they want, so I guess they haven't totally forgotten about us? I already sent them an email a few weeks back telling them which otome games I'm interested but they probably would appreciate more opinions, so let IFI know what you want!

By the way, I've heard that Bad Apple Wars was a bit average (3 stars on Amazon). It seems there was hardly any romance and the plot was okay but it didn't explain some stuff. Too bad since the art and ost are quite nice.

Seeing otome fans deflate after the lack of announcements was pretty sad.
Apparently IFI's a small team and are listening to online support though. I'm sure they'll run out of RPGs eventually.

The recent 90% sale on Amnesia practically doubled its LTD, which says a lot about how poorly the game performed. :(
I'm going by Steamspy so take it with a grain of salt. In any case, this probably did a lot to put IFI off for awhile.

Really unfortunate. A:M is my first foray into the genre and I'm liking it a lot.

Major spoilers?
It probably helps that half the stories are freaking insane. What the fuck, Toma?

So Orion says maybe it's my fault that Toma is a psychopath. No! Nononononono. Fuck you Orion.

You think so? I'm honestly unsure, because some of my favorite otoge like Geten no Hana have opened up with really seemingly low sales in Japan with a first week of 8k sales, and then completely dropping off the charts the next week...but then getting fandisc and a theatrical adaptation. From what I've seen for the past 4 years this seems to be a normal case, unless you're one of the heavy hitters (UtaPri, DL, etc)

It seems that ~6k sales before the sale isn't all that bad for a growing community, not to mention the ones that they also got from mobile and Vita on top of it. Maybe I'm just an eternal optimist though, lol. They've also been recently asking for a lot of feedback on otome titles people want to them to bring over next, so who really knows.

6k sales isn't bad, it's better than what the majority of localized visual novels do. And there's also whatever it sold on the Vita.

Comparing to sales of most visual novels from Sekai Project and Mangagamer on Steam, Amnesia is doing quite well, even if you take into account the recent sale.

Yeah, most otome games don't actually sell that much. For example, Bad Apple Wars was hyped and it only sold 5,813 according to Dengeki, 3,962 according to Famitsu, and it didn't even chart with MC. In contrast, I think the new Hakuoki went on to sell around 20,000? I also think Amnesia did relatively well for its first week on Steam compared to a few other VNs.

IFI discounting Amnesia so cheap might be a gamble to grow the fanbase in preparation for the next one. Or maybe not, I dunno.

There's a list of all the otome games released this year with how much they sold on

Well it is explained a bit, though, ya know, it really doesn't justify that crazy shit. That story line is essentially a fuckton of miscommunication (mostly because the MC was being super vague about something) happened, and someone went off the deep end as a result. I think they mentioned something about some childhood stuff too but I was so confused and frankly checked out of that path that I don't remember how significant it was.

So yes, in a very basic sense, I guess it's her fault, but... yeah... guy's cray without that anyway.

I didn't even think to look up some of the other VNs on there to compare. That's good news at least!

Holy crap at BAW though. Surprised at those numbers since they seemed to have quite a bit of marketing for it from what I could see. Sad to see people say it was mediocre since the premise seemed really cool.

Hakuouki will be forever a selling machine it seems, lol. I'd be really interested in seeing those numbers though, in particular curious how much 遙かなる時空の中で6 has sold.

Harukanaru 6 was in the top 5 so it did pretty well, but it's still a decline from the previous titles; If I remember correctly, some of the older titles sold twice as much. But then everything has gone down, except for maybe UtaPri. For example, the original Norn9 sold close to 30,000, which hasn't happen in years.

What's that famous otome visual novel that was said to be too expensive to get localized? Starry sky? Starry eyed?

Starry Sky. They blamed the voice acting iirc.

Edit: Yep, here's a link to an interview
Payne explained that secondary use, which is what a US release would fall under, would require a big licensing fee which could result in the voice actor studio asking for as much as half of the original pay out for the additional release
“We could of course release the games without voice, but that would defeat their commercial value since fans would not be cool with a move like this"

(Which I found via Siliconera, who found it via ANN ^_^)

Yeah, that's from Peter Payne, the head of Jast/Jlist. Licensing voice acting is problematic in general, but even more so for otome games because these bigger name male voice actors are even more expensive.

Disappointing though it is to hear about licensing fee nightmares, I still kind of love the comment at the end about eroge and yaoi.
“Anything with sex in it is easier since the voice actors are much easier.”

There's plenty of 18+ otome which should be easier to license then. Personally I'm interested in Chou no Doku and Koezaru wa Akai Hana.

Shizuka

That one with older characters mentioned earlier is 18+, thatd be an interesting one, although I'm not sure I'd play a 18+ otome game.

Ephidel

As long as it has a plot as well as porn I absolutely would.

I've never heard of either of those but Koezaru wa Akai Hana sounds pretty interesting.

Edit: Actually, the other one is one of the ones Chaos17 posted on a previous page, isn't it?

jzbluz

Yeah, Chou no Doku was posted earlier. Both titles have an all-ages version so they could in theory be sold on Steam.

I'm a bit sad that Ayakashi Gohan sold so little, although it is a port... I really enjoyed the original PC release. Most common complaint I've seen on Amazon and review blogs are about the load times.

Are there any good examples of any of these games that are Queer friendly but are not targeted towards men? I mean, i wouldn't mind to try a few good ones out. But, it would be nice to find one that fits my taste (although i know that being gay is still quite taboo in Japan and probably affects the variety of games available)

Sweet Fuse and Code Realize are the best, IMO. Both Hours Left and I enjoyed those (at least he did enjoy Sweet Fuse, IIRC).

What might make an otome queer friendly? Just anything that doesn't revolve around the heroine being a lady specifically? I'm curious.

Thanks! I was considering a Let's Play ish thing of it, but I don't know if that would be considered boring or overkill or what. Open to opinions.

Hey, I'd be interested in that. You can choose either this topic or the OT for the game, either way is fine.

Was thinking it might warrant a new one, but that works too. It'd be too picture heavy IMO, it'd deluge either the OT or this topic.

Women dating women, specifically.

I think I've seen some talk that Cheritz's next otomege, Mystic Messenger, might actually have a girlxgirl option.

And I finished all of Shin's routes in Amnesia. I did end up liking him more and more as the game went, but it was only just the good ending that clenched it for me. I'm thinking I'll go with Kent next.

That's definitely not an option in Sweet Fuse or Code Realize. Unfortunately none of the otome I've played have had that--I figured you meant queer friendly for gay men for some reason instead of women, so I had that all wrong, lol. I'm certain there must be some but I've not personally run into any yet.

Aww Kent. :'D He really grows on you too. One of the cool things about Amnesia is how different the stories are in each world and seeing how the characters are different or similar in each one.

I'm on the second day with him, and he's already great. :'D "I prepped myself on relationships, and I hear that couples enjoy walking. Let's go." *zooms off into the distance* And I'm already noticing differences with people's personalities, like with Toma and Waka; this is really cool. :D I love it when VNs' different routes are super different.

Long Live The Queen does, sort of. I should start the Amnesia LP tonight if not tomorrow, new thread if that's allowed.

Early early Amnesia impressions: damn this game is pretty. Localization seems very good, too. This is my first post-NISA IF game, so I was worried about how good they'd be. Guess they're up to the task.

Have no clue how I'll do the LP, updates might have to be very small if there's tons and tons of choices. Guess I'll wing it.

Get ready for them typos (unless they fixed the Steam version and left the Vita version for dead).
