We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the mess that DoubleFine is leaving behind? The depth(s) of Dwarf Fortress? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:

Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.

If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.

If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

GAF Thread: Freeware Games
So many free games are out there and so many are just really good games that a large majority of people will never play. From developers with large portfolios of freeware games, to free alphas and betas, to the hundreds and hundreds of entries for game jams such as Seven Day Roguelike, Seven Day FPS, Ludum Dare, and others, to the talented work of Digipen students, there's just an astounding amount of quality free games to play and enjoy that this thread tries to uncover.

5th and thread open. Will need a bit to fill in stuff. :)

There is way too much stuff to get this October, I am gonna be poor by November. I was certain I would get Cuphead on release but I might have to wait till after Christmas with that now. Great opening post as usual.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Whew, so many good games.

Cuphead is ridiculous, btw.

How is the gameplay? I read that some people werent too happy with the non boss sections, but might just be a random unrepresentative sample.

Cuphead is so good I can just vote it #1 now. Unless a meteor falls from space with some alien game that we don't know about, It will be my overall GOTY.

If I were to split hairs, the platforming levels were not always as great as the boss battles - mainly because they often lacked the same sense of urgency. But that's not to say they were anywhere near bad. In some cases they offered really cool scenarios that you didn't see in the boss battles. They just weren't always perfect, whereas every boss battle was.

Cuphead is basically the look of the 30s, with the arcade feel from the 80s, and the tight gameplay from today. It all blends so perfectly. It's super quirky and absurd with its overall visual style and boss design, reminding me a lot of Rayman Origins. And while it is challenging - it took me just under 10 hours and 348 deaths - I had a smile on my face from the second the title screen appeared to the moment the credits rolled.

It's as close to perfection as is humanly possible.

And it simply shouldn't be missed, by anyone, period.

Hope this works.

It uses the movements of chess pieces (specifically, how they take) but no more than that. You don't need to know any advanced moves like en passant, castling, or any actual rules (who wins, draws, etc.).

Everything you need to know is in this image:
YC8p2eH.png

I played some more and I'm enjoying it, the game is relaxing even though it requires being concentrated and paying attention to the position of the chess pieces and it feels perfect to play after a busy day where I don't have the will to play more longer games. Huge props to you for making the game very accessible.

Looks like I managed to break the thread with the giveaway. Placement is listed twice and the first one is nonsense. Also, it's now released.

After playing some more i found that it was too easy just to stumble on to the solution and move on. Would enjoy it more if there was some sort of penalty like say hexcells for an incorrect solution. Obviously the gameplay styles are different enough between those games that copying the penalty solution wouldnt work but it is kinda easy just to guess and shift a few random pieces to complete the puzzle

Orwell is okay. There is quite an interesting game idea in there but I found it was a little let down by a slightly meandering plot and general poor characterisation. Also your presences in the game is a little slim, instead of acting like an investigator which the game suggests you are you end up more of a clue collector, just throwing them into a clue database till that fills up and the next story moment happens. Their is an interesting mechanic in the 'conflicted data clunks' idea where you get access to these two clues that conflict with each other and it is your job to report which one you want to Big Brother, which does shape the story a bit but I found this idea wasn't used enough to really get its nails into the story.

So I just wanted to gush about Absolver some more. I know it didn't come out this month, but I think it's the best new take on fighting games since SSB and I'm STILL playing it every night. I wish it was more popular on GAF, but at least the subreddit is active.

Do we know when ''Into the breach'' with come out?

Also I tought the game Orwell came out a while ago?

edit: oh well it's season two so i guess it's the sequel?

Haven’t been playing many indie games lately, been preoccupied with replaying The New Order in preparation for The New Colossus and going through my 31 Days of Horror watchlist

Did get access to Nowhere Prophet, which just released on itch.io’s early/First access program, so I’ll post impressions later

Wishlisted Spire of Sorcery and looking forward to The New World when it gets further along in development, concept art is gorgeous though.
The New World devs are using UE4 for this game, so it’s going to be a major visual upgrade from Age of Decadence

Yeah apparently Age of Decadence used Torque, which doesn't seem to have caught on much. The number of notable games released on the engine you can pretty much count on one hand.

Contrast with Unity and UE4 which have become ubiquitous industry standards for those not using their own in-house engines.

Played a little of Cuphead and I'm loving it so far, the animations are incredible and I don't see any other indie game surpassing it for quite some time. I did read some impressions and some people were saying the game was hard, indeed it is but I don't feel it's unfair because even if I die during the fight I got to understand better the bosses patterns. I'm happy for the team, because the game seems to be doing well.

Hey

Look

A new Zachtronics game

A “Spacechem but alchemy” Zachtronics game

And it’s releasing this Thursday

http://store.steampowered.com/app/558990/Opus_Magnum/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj689znjxpg

That could be one for me. I do like Zachtronics games but when they get very codey (SHENZHEN, TIS-100) they get away from me a bit. Never really had a good mind that that convert lines of code into good solutions but give me a bit of visual aid like Spacechem or Infinifactory and I'll be smashing out solutions all day.

Silicon Zeroes shouldn't be in the future games list, eh? It shows it came out on Steam and it's available currently for purchase. I knew I had seen it come out and added it to my wishlist.

A new Zachtronics game coming up is excellent news.

But Iconoclasts is my number one indie game I'm waiting for right now. I feel like it's been that way for a decade.

How is the gameplay? I read that some people werent too happy with the non boss sections, but might just be a random unrepresentative sample.

I think the Run & Gun stages compliment the game just fine.

It's a rare 10/10 game, TBQH. Everything is balanced and serves a purpose. Of course, top notch animation. And that soundtrack is totally unexpected!

Just wanted to say It’s been a real pleasure to read these indie game threads every month for the last year or so. Thanks a lot, especially to Toma and More_Badass

Same here.
Indie Gaf has been the best, most digest source of indie games news for me over the last couple of years, and I do hope that it'll go on.

I wish I knew where Toma was.

This topic is literally what keeps me coming back. Especially with the trash AAA is trying to push.

If any of you need any details just PM me

These monthly threads and either joining in or creating OTs for the games I'm playing are why I love GAF. If we don't stay here, I hope we find an equally suitable replacement.

I loved these threads, even though I very rarely posted in them. I hope I'll see them continue wherever.
