Pitchfork Media have a feature called 5-10-15-20 where they ask musicians to look back at the music they listened to, or the music that shaped their lives, at certain arbitrary intervals

I thought it would be interesting to ask you all how you'd answer this if the question was instead based around games

So, GAF, what were you playing when you were 5-10-15-20, or what was the most memorable game or gaming experience you had at those ages?

For me:

5: I don't actually have an answer for this, as I think I started playing games a few years later on.

10: Mario Kart 64. I had just picked up an N64 and had opted to get Mario Kart 64 over Mario 64. I don't even remember why, but it was the only game I had for months and I played it for hours most days

15: Super Smash Bros: Melee. I picked this up with Rogue Leader with my GameCube and after picking my jaw off the floor after marveling at the latter games graphics, the former consumed hundreds of hours of my life

20: The Wii era coinciding with me being at Uni meant this year was mostly about Wii Sports as more serious games took a backseat to studying and socialising

25: Demon's Souls. The game that lead me to GAF and reignited my love for the medium

So what about you, GAF?

That's actually pretty interesting.

Age 5: Legend of Zelda (NES) - Totally defined my early childhood relationship with video games, and still one of my favourites ever.

Age 10: Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) - Flashy, dumb fun. I actually didn't play too many video games at this age. Just had a Genesis and a couple of games for it.

Age 15: Ocarina of Time - This game means a massive, massive amount to me as I was struggling with bullying in boarding school at the time. I'd spend months thinking about playing this game to take my mind of things. My expectations were stratospheric; somehow the game went above and beyond them.

Age 20: GTA: San Andreas - As a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, I never considered buying a rival product. This game changed that, and got me to buy a PS2 slim, having previously hated Playstation in that ignorant teenage fanboy way. Needless to say, the scales fell from my eyes pretty quickly and my love affair with Sony's consoles began. What a game.

Age 25: Demon's Souls - I got caught up in the prerelease hype but never imagined it could be as good as it was. It took me weeks and weeks and weeks to beat, but every moment was exhilarating.

5 - Yoshi's Island
10 - Twilight Princess
15 - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
20 - Destiny

My biggest problem answering this is there's so many games that influenced my genre interests from just about every year in my life starting from 5 - Destiny for example I played when I was 17, but I would say it's the most significant in that timespan.

This doesn't really work for me lol. I gravitated towards Sony after I turned 20, but Nintendo handheld games have always been the most notable in my first 20

5 - no electronics
10 - alex kidd on sega Master System II
15 - would be a tie between Final Fantasy VIII on PC and Baldurs Gate 2. I was more like 17/18 but those games are the most influential at my late teenager years
20 - World of Warcraft
25 - X3 Reunion and terran conflict, I sunk hundreds of hours into the X games, over the whole franchise it would be maybe over a thousand
30 - Paradox developed and published games another easy 1000+ hours into CK, HOI, Victoria, EU, Warband, and all the other games from this publisher

5 - Spyro the Dragon probably. It was the first game I ever played and 5 sounds about right for when I started

10 - Metal Gear Solid 1-3. My cousin introduced me to the series leading up to 3 and I fell in love, and it became my all time favorite series

15 - COD whatever one was out at the time. I went through a slight dudebro phase. I played good shit too, but COD was my most played

20 - The Last of Us. What a game, just what a game

5: Commander Keen, Duke 3D and other DOS games
10: Jazz Jackrabbit 2
15: Ragnarok Online
20: Call of Duty

Out of these, JJ2 and Ragnarok Online took the biggest chunks out of my life. So good. In my 20's I'm playing way too many different kinds of games. I'm 25 now and it would be pretty difficult to fill that one in.

I got my first console, the PS3, at 19 years of age in 2010. I was PC only before that.

I'm more so weirded out that you played fallout 3 at age 5 than anything else.

For me,
5- Pokemon Blue (I don't remember the exact age that I got my cousins' old Gameboy, probably around there)
10- Megaman Battle Network and Advance Wars
15- Disgaea 2 for the PSP, Phoenix Wright, 999, and a bunch of random jrpgs
20- Dota 2, Persona 3, Smash 4, Trails in the Sky and a lot more Dota 2

5- Super Mario 64 (Got the console for Christmas, been hooked since)

10-Super Smash Bros Melee (So many memories of playing this with my older brother. Probably my favorite game of all time)

15-Shadow Of the Colossus (Got the HD collection for the PS3, one of my favorites)

20- The Last Guardian (Everything I wanted from this game. Very happy it saw the light.)

20: All Star Wars all time. KOTOR, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, Jedi Knight (Outcast and Academy)

5 - Space Invaders arcade (may be a year early, if so then Night Driver) - My mom worked at a bar and during tough times, for a couple of shifts, I would have to tag along, and playing Space Invaders was the thing which I did to spend my time, and it started a lifelong love.

10 - Missile Command 2600 - Tied with Asteroids as the cart I put the most time into. I got a high score in Missile Command and took a pic with a Polaroid and sent it into Atari Age magazine. All proper names in that sentence are damned old!

15 - Winter Games C64 - I babysit for a while and the folks whose house I was watching had a C64, and I discovered Epyx. I hastled my parents and eventually got my own c64, and I spent so much time with these Epyx olympic games its not even funny.

20 - Street Fighter II arcade - My old best buddy and I finally got over our air hockey thing due to Street Fighter II. We'd hit the arcade for hours, and later when I got into college the 7-11 nearby had a cabinet, so we spent a lot of time on it.

...should I get more increments? doesn't feel right leaving off at the start of the 90's. Oh well.

5 - Blades of Steel - Came out a few years before I was 5 but wasn't gaming in diapers. Was one of my first games and probably started gaming around 5-6. Am I Canadian stereotype?

10 - Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball - Super Metroid is one of my favorite games of all time but didn't get into it until later. So realistically around 10 I was probably playing this a lot more. Home run derby's with friends and a Big Foot Pizza from Pizza Hut. The good ol' days.

15 - Team Fortress Classic - There are only two games I can say ever dominated my life to the point of thousands of hours being lost to them. This was the first and by far the most time I have spent on a game.

20 - Guild Wars - This was the second.

25 - MAG - Damn you Sony! The fact I can never play this again and will never get a sequel saddens me.

30 - NHL 16 - Well guess by 30 I came full circle and ended up back at being a stereotypical Canadian. Been hooked on HUT the last few years.

No guarantee I was playing them specifically at these ages but based it on release dates being roughly around the ages and some of the biggest time sinks I have played over the years. Honestly TFC could probably cover 15 and 20 with how much I played that.

You can go more increments, they do so on Pitchfork, which is where I got the idea for this thread, as most of the people they interview are over 25

5- Super Mario 64 - It released around this age but not sure exactly when I was playing it :)

10 - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Didn't get many games back then but this was the one I was most eager to play.

15 - Resident Evil 4 - Very few games I complete multiple times. I ran through RE4 about 6 times so this was an easy decision. Easily one of the GOAT's.

20 - Black Ops - This was actually rather difficult as I looked at the years around this age and nothing stood out. But I put the most hours into Black Ops so I guess it wins.

25 - Dota 2 - Started playing in 2012 and it has been my most played game every year so this would win from ages 20 and up.

5 was a toss-up between LoZ and Mario, but I went with Zelda because it captured my imagination more than Mario. And this year—35—Breath of the Wild comes out. :/

So many Zelda's. When you put it in perspective like this, you really get a sense of how legendary

the series is. We're talking a lifetime of memories.

I'm 22. No idea what my next one will be. Also, it's weird how this list makes it look like I moved more from handhelds into consoles over time, whereas it's the other way around (I went from using my handhelds a lot for one or two games and consoles for most of everything else to using a console for mostly one or two games and handhelds for everything else).
