The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

You say that as if you think he's ending the site. He's just retiring a single character. All his friends will still be around and he will be back as a new character. He's not going anywhere. They bought a studio to do more stuff more quickly and more professionally. You don't like their stuff, then you don't need to be in here. Why are you in here? Do you watch it just to hate it? Because you speak as if you've seen every single thing they've done.

This thread is for people who are interested in TGWTG and their future. Not for people who think he's hanging up the.. uh.. whatever it is you hang up when you retire.
This is hilarious. Can you help out GAF and visit the other threads to tell us who is supposed to participate?

What Spoony said actually mirrored that of what Apollo Z Hack said. The website design is a real problem for a lot of the producers. Their stuff just gets buried in too many menus. The thing about dating is also a very good point, since one of the main reasons Apollo left was due to a bad break up with Obscurus Lupa.
See, I don't even know who Apollo is which proves the point that the site is really terribly laid out. There's probably 5 times as many reviewers on the site than people know of because they don't get a place on the main page. There's no thumbnails under each person. And finding something from a while ago is harder than hard. I've already said this but damn, it is terrible. I wish I was better with designing a website so I could join their team as the new webmaster. Who does it now? Are they a professional? Because it seems he just has one of his team members design the site because they know how to HTML. They need a professional design that works in the year 2012. Better categorization. What each person reviews. Some better way of sorting out all the crossovers.

And the relationship stuff, while humorous, is just getting confusing now. I mean who is actually dating who? Lupa and Phaelous? Lindsay and Todd? JesuOtaku and um.. whoever she called in the final part of the special I can't remember who it was? Which of those are real? Lupa posted a blog a few months ago about how it was getting out of hand with Todd drooling over her (Albeit fictionally as a joke) all the time. And who knows what set Spoony off before he took a chill pill and mended the bridges and went on his own way.

Oh, and Brad Jones is probably my favorite personality on the site. Bar none. Out of all of them, he seems like the guy I'd like to be good friends with.

Not only that, but who else could get paid to watch bad porn, horrible horror films and drink 20 year old beverages all day? Sign me up!

Like every other "internet character," their schtick got old after a few episodes and then they rided it out into the sunset...and then came back around the planet and rode out to the sunset again.

The issue is that they're not talented...at all. Only on the internet (where fanbases grow like weeds) could they survive. They actually have nothing to fall back on but their shtick...which is less about talent than it is about filling a gap in the internet's offering, and, almost always, based on the love for something else to get like minded people with awful taste to gather...aka nostalgia. Nostaligia critic and his crew took all that nostalgia and shoved it into a cheese grater, sucked all the life out of the 80's they could and then left it to die, not caring that they too would die in the process.

Or perhaps constant exposure to media funded by deep pockets has left you jaded and hateful towards anything that doesn't have a budget.

I don't think I've ever seen so much hatred for a project that's ending. Even if some widely reviled webcomic (VGCats, PVP, Crtl+Alt+Delete) were to suddenly be discontinued, I don't think you would have as many people showing up to spit on their grave and say how shitty and untalented they were.

I guess they must have done something right :)

I always chalk it up to gamers being the bunch that hangs on to the coattails of "it's not the first" mentality. Hell, I'd daresay I tolerate NC more than AVGN's shtick.

This is a god thing. This guy and his friends were never funny. Not only that, he really tried way too hard, so it was awkward in addition to being unamusing.

I don't see where the fandom comes from, but then again people on GAF actually liked Spoony so it's not surprising.

Next thing you'll tell me is why MLP FiM has a fanbase.

Honestly, I'd never try to defend the critic from any objective standpoint, as I freely admit that my enjoyment of him is entirely rooted in the fact that I like Doug as a person, but Spoony is legitimately really fucking funny and very talented. His Phantasmagoria 2 Let's Play is probably one of the funniest things the internet has yet produced.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
It has been months now. Is there any word at all on his new shows?

Demo Reel has been a huge miss with the audience. Tonal shifts from comedy to drama with no idea on what direction they want to take the show. It's unknown how long it will last.

EDIT: To elaborate, people HATED the first episode for being a bunch of old TDKR jokes. Two weeks later, Doug announced the planned second episode had been removed and they were re-tooling the show. By the third episode, the whole "remaking movies" plot was put to the side in favor of applying the movie parodies to real life. For example: Episode 3 was a Lost in Translation parody at an anime convention, Episode 4 was a Blair Witch Project parody with Donnie (Doug's character) lost in the woods.

However, one of the more annoying criticisms is "THIS IS DIFFERENT! I HATE DIFFERENT! BRING BACK NOSTALGIA CRITIC!" They've reported they're ignoring every comment like this.

Sibling Rivalry has been a success, but it's really just Doug and Rob playing Siskel & Ebert so no issues there.

Shut Up and Talk has only had one episode but has potential. It needs more guests.

Are any of those the main "nostalgia" related show he said was coming?

I thought all along that it was a huge mistake to retire that character. Sure, introduce new shows and evolve, but it was what most people knew and love. I have barely even visited the site since he made that decision. He at the very least could have eased the character out or something, and maybe faded it out once one of the new shows was taking off big and was at a stature to fully replace the NC.

Nope, none of them are nostalgia related. We also have yet to see that video game-based game show hosted by Brad Jones.

I will agree that he should have eased out of the Nostalgia Critic rather than stop it abruptly and expect people to like this new series. For weeks, people didn't realize Scooby Doo was the finale. Sure it ended like Star Trek: TNG, but people assumed it was a joke.

I'm surprised more people didn't put two and two together. "All Good Things" homage/parody ending + trailers for "To Boldly Flee" that made it pretty evident that it was going to be the end of the Nostalgia Critic. Plus, NC ended in a very "TV-show-esque" way. You had the Scooby Doo episode, which could be seen as a "TV ending", to serve as a proper finale for those not watching the movie, then a big "theatrical" ending in TBF that serves as the true ending to the series.

"Demo Reel" isn't the replacement for Nostalgia Critic. I believe that goes to their better show "Sibling Rivalry" which stars both Doug and Rob reviewing a movie they have differing opinions on.

Least Nostalgia Chick is going strong. She can review good things and still be amusing. Her current LotR reviews have been great so far.

I actually like Sibling Rivalry because it's just the two giving their opinion piece in a film or show without any character or skit.

And yeah NChick has been great, though I was hoping for more Shorts! series. Been wanting more after her Sebben Dwarfs analysis.

Her friends are all terribly unfunny, though. Her videos would be much better without them.

She's moved to a different place now, so they won't appear much. And tbqh they're fine when they don't take up much time. For instance I like Nella in Sister Act compared to her appearance in Jem.

There's a lot of people I like on the site, for different reasons. Humor, analysis, observations, it all works out. Granted, I don't like everyone. I can't stand Phelous anymore, his schtick has gotten way too old and he refuses to change it.

^Yeah, what bothers me is that people think every submission in the site are the same, forgetting that it covers broad topics with different people doing different reviews.

Personally I only watch Lupa, Critic, Chick, and the occasional Snob. I really don't like video game reviews (save for the occasional Jew Wario) especially it's from Joe or Spoony.

Seraphis Cain

I mainly only watch Todd and the occasional Brad video (mostly Brad Tries) anymore. CGR and Ashens provide enough internet review-y goodness that I don't really need to visit TGWTG often anymore.

I used to watch only Nostalgia Critic and Chick, but I gave Todd a try and, not even being a fan of pop music, it's pretty funny stuff.

http://sfdebris.com/ is my favorite web review site. Guy focuses on Sci Fi, mostly Star Trek, but he's able to be very amusing, even with good episodes and films.

I never got why SFDebris endorsed Confused Matthew, Confused Matthew is an idiot.

I can remember the first time I saw one of this guy's videos.
I couldn't make it though half of it. Just horrible, distractingly crappy sense of humor.

Couldn't stomach watching this crap.
It's a shame because I do think his opinions were sound, but he was such an annoying buffoon, and came off like a 9 year old making a video in his mothers basement.

Well that's the point of the character. Actually a lot of his views on the movies are just for jokes. Sometimes he might review a movie and say it's really bad, but in reality he actually likes it. It's just a character he did, and that character's schtick was to get mad at shitty movies. Eventually he ran out of the really shitty movies though and that's when it stopped being fun.

Edit: But I agree though. I loved it, but it was kind of hard to show my friends his videos because of the way he acts in a lot of them. Really annoying sometimes.

I still go to the site regularly to watch various people - the main goto for me is Nostalgia Chick (<3). Then there's Film Brain, Todd In The Shadows, Rap Critic, JesuOtake, Angry Joe (sometimes), and Linkara (only for HOPR, still waiting).

Oh yeah, I forgot - I also see Suede for his recent series where he, Linkara, and JewWario review all of the Pokemon movies. It's good fun (not too negative or sarcastic), and it doesn't take 6 months to update!

(only like 1-2 months or so :p)

I watch quite a few of the critics on the site. I've named them before. Doug, Lindsay. I also like when Lindsay works with Nella. And I enjoy Maven vampire reviews too. Also Brad is enjoyable in pretty much all his stuff. Paw with his musical reviews. Matthew Buck with BMB and Projector. Mike J when he does his stuff like Shameful Sequels and Hang on a Second and his newest Infomercialism. He actually buys the product sometimes to make fun of the infomercial. I also like when Last Angry Geek or Nash do Doctor Who reviews. Angry Joe is pretty good. Todd is always entertaining and usually the only way I'll listen to certain pop songs. Spoony occasionally back in the day but he doesn't really do much I care about. I might have forgotten some.

I'd look back but I am always discovering new ones because their site is so horribly designed its impossible to find anything old. I've tried searching for their old anniversary specials and their search function is so shitty it doesn't work right at all most of the time.

Try Chick again. Her style is very distinct - plain analytical with no gimmick.

These days, I mostly follow Linkara and JesuOtaku, both of which came to be gradual after the Nostalgia Critic slowly lost it's steam. I've been meaning to get into NChick too, but her style does take some getting used to, though I hope it pays out for me.

Lindsay is awesome. Actually, one of my favorite reviews of hers was her My Little Pony episode. I think it was one of Nella's first appearances too.

Lindsay also replied to me on Twitter once. So there's that.

You have to use Google to find any of those, since the site is just a clusterfuck of nested menus.

I only care about Film Brain, MikeJ, Todd, Sibling Rivalry, and occasionally Angry Joe. I like Cinema Snob's theatrical movie reviews (unless his girlfriend is present), but those are only posted to his website so I go there for those.

I've watched all the anniversary movies, but I haven't enjoyed one since Kickassia. It was basically the only one with a decent premise. This may be my favorite line ever:

"As my first order as your president, I shall build a table. A round table. So everyone can look each other in the eye. And I shall be elevated above you in a rocket chair! In a magnificent rocket chair, so I can look down on all of you and see just how equal we all are!"

The show got really stale and was a far cry from his best stuff, which imo was Batman and Robin, Mortal Kombat and most of his earlier stuff. The only "newer" episode i loved was The Room and Cool as Ice reviews.

I dont go much to TGWTG anymore, i lost interest in Brad Jones stuff because most movies he reviews now feature his friends, and it was always better when it was just Brad and the camera, felt more personal. Welshy is the only reason i go there, his retrospectives of Scream and Saw are great if you are a horror movie fan.

They still haven't changed the design to their website.

I'm pretty sure you can lose viewership because of bad designs, like what happened to Gametrailers.

The only person who's been able to work outside of that website is either Angry Joe or Jesu Otaku. Everyone else just does reviews of bad movies or old movies. At least Nostalgia Chick's videos are sometimes insightful.

I like CinemaSnob's reviews for new movies ie their midnight reviews that they do. They were short and nice in the beginning, but now a days they go on for about hours so yeah its bad.

Plus their new media player that uses does not work half of the time. Hence I don't visit as much now.

Also flaming brain and their soft drink reviews are awesome.

Aside from that I used to go to Linkara, but after slowed down his power ranger stuff.. Its been ok.

That's the problem. The site DOES use Google. And it still doesn't work well enough to return the logical choices. If you search for Kickassia it will return a bunch of unrelated links along with the 6 parts to the video in the wrong order when it should be returning exactly what you need. Also, you will sometimes see an entry for a reviewers video on the home page that you can't find later when you go searching for it manually in the place it should logically be. It's ridiculously designed and laid out and dare I say it, the worst designed functional web site on the internet. Plus for some stupid reason it relegates its results into a small sliver on the right side of the page with nothing on the left in the content area. The results I get for the above are as follows: Part 01, Commentary, Part 02, 5 Seconds, Part 06, Commentary (again?), Trailer, Part 04, Part 05, Part 03. And that's just the first page.

Hire someone to fix it already, Doug! Who does, or rather did, the website to begin with? Even Cinemassacre and GameTrailers (As mentioned) redesigned their previously clunky sites to be much better recently. I want to hope they have a new design in store or something. I mean it'll be what, 5 years this year and it's still the same design it was then? Back when they didn't have nearly the same amount of reviewers.

Another problem is they have so many reviewers that have so many separate sub-characters/series' it makes it even harder. For instance, Brad himself has the Snob, but he also has '80s Dan and Brad Tries and Brad's Current Movie Reviews. Lindsay actually employs other people for her alternates but they all filter under the same Team Chick heading. Todd is easy as he just has Pop Song Reviews and One Hit Wonderland, both of which are kept simple and similar to each other. Same with Matthew who generally just does Bad Movie Beatdown and Projector. But then there's Doug himself who has done the Critic and the Bum, two completely separate types. And both have their own section on the main page. Even though Critic is now done and the only new videos going into that list now are behind the scenes stuff every few weeks.

I think every separate person/team should have their own thumbnail on the main site. Every one of them. All organized by popularity. But every single one would be shown. Then under it, when you click it, have it expand and show everything they've uploaded in order by newest. Along with the category it belongs under. When you click to go to their page. Instead of a useless sub list of categories that doesn't really tell you when something was added (Some of them have categories they haven't uploaded to in years) make it more useful. Show us every category with every video each one has, ordered by last upload. Make the site more useful, guys!

Anyway you guys should watch Cinderella 3 - even before Chick said it I always believed it's one of those diamond in the rough.
It really is great. She can surprise when she wants to. She picks the best choices. And I don't even care if she was originally hired to be the female nostalgia equivalent. Once she started moving into Doug's territory it got so much better. Almost like he hired her to be his apprentice and replacement way back when.

Plus their new media player that uses does not work half of the time. Hence I don't visit as much now.
I don't have that problem. It always works for me. I just wish it wasn't so inconsistent. Older videos use the old style, but new ones use either one that auto-plays the next video or just shows a list of related videos in the series. I wish you could globally turn off the auto-play. Actually, their player works 100% more consistently without extra buffering than YouTune itself does for me. And I watch a LOT of internet videos. Their player, and actually pretty much all non-YouTune players, work pretty well for me.

I remember when I first heard of the site back when the Nerd brought it to everyone's attention calling him a "ripoff" that ended up culminating in an epic battle when it became obvious that it was set up. Which I'm glad because I like that they are friends and not actual enemies. But the battle stuff in the first Anniversary video was pretty darn awesome at the time. I didn't know who any of the other people in the video were at the time, and a lot of the people they employ now weren't even hired way back then. And some have even left since.

I assume they're done with anniversary movies now as last years took forever to finish and pretty much closed the door on the idea. Which is good I guess for them. Let's them use the time to actually do their work. Sometimes I wish I was getting paid to do videos on the internet instead of slicing meat in a deli day in and day out. Except today since I'm off.

She's like the Anti-Critic. Where Doug would review a movie and scream about how awful it was and go overboard like AGVN does (Which was why the whole similarities thing even came up in the first place), Lindsay analyzes everything and presents it in a much more calm matter like "here is the movie and here is what it does."

She recently did a Twilight review. But it wasn't a review of the movie. It was a review or observation of the audience and experience. It was brilliant. (And seeing as Maven had already reviewed the movie as did everyone else on the internet, there was no reason for her to also review a movie she didn't really care about.)
