13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (ATLUS | VanilaWare) TGS 2017 Trailer

For those who are wondering, this seems to be the "action" portion of the gameplay.

If this game has action and this is it, I don't think this game is for me. Shame because otherwise it looks very intriguing.

I'll either wait for next year or just buy Dragon's Crown on PS3 tomorrow instead(I really hope this one doesn't require sixaxis tho)

You're going to judge the game on five seconds of footage? The atmosphere and vibe seem amazing to me. I'm down for whatever gameplay accompanies it.

Wait what lol
Odin Sphere's stories were insufferably pretentious, with almost zero likeable characters (and all of them completely 1-dimensional) and worse, it had tons of unskippable dialogue too. I loved the game for the gameplay, but the story was throwaway nonsense.
at the risk of sounding insufferably pretentious, odin sphere isn't a story about likable or multi-dimensional characters (and i certainly liked many of them). it's written like a scandinavian fable with the theatricality of a tragic play. complex or sympathetic characters aren't so much the goal in that kind of storytelling.

that's what kamitami's stories (when he wants to tell one, at least) are good at. muramasa is in much the same way a period story told like an exaggerated kabuki play, and executes on that extremely well imo. i'd actually say you might enjoy that more, since it's far more focused at a character level.

i'm not trying to say it has to be your thing or that if you hate it, then you're a Bad Critic or whatever, but i think stories should be judged on what they try (or fail) to be and not what they never shot for in the first place

the music is good. art will prob be great as well. what kind of game is it though? i'll be totally happy if it's something turn based.

Honestly the air of mystery reminds me of Catherine's marketing, and that wound up being the best thing Atlus has ever done(non SMT at least), so I like where this is going.

yea, i'd play anything as long as it's fun. i normally don't buy games like catherine. i enjoyed it in the end.

I wish there was gameplay. Knowing Vanillaware, it'd be an action game but I really want an srpg with this art style.

According to Famitsu leaks, the focus on this game is story and atmosphere, not so much action. The concept was "shoujo manga + heavy mechs" and the setting is meant to be a 1980s inspired Japan, for nostalgia. There are 13 characters in the story and they are all protagonists. It definitely sounds like almost purely an adventure title.

If that's the case they should have embraced the garish over-saturation of Magic Knight Rayearth

That sounds great, honestly.

It's a shame because that perspective makes it so you can't appreciate the art of the mechs in action.

Give me 80s Gundam vibes, this is perfect!

Seems like I'm in a minority, but I definitely prefer this over another 2d action/beat-em-up/RPG like Odin Sphere or Dragon's Crown.

Just based off this and the trailer's vibe I am completely in. Sounds incredibly ambitious and fairly unique. I hope the game is decently long so it can support that ensemble size.

Yar, it definitely is written like an ancient epic where pretty much everybody is a figuration who makes dumb decisions, and I like it mostly for that mood. As well as for the non-contradictory, intertwined tales of various people because I'm a sucker for that.

I'm never that big on any of Vanillaware's gameplay so this sounds good to me.

Is understandable they want to do something different after Odion Sphere, Muramasa and Dragon's Crown. No matter what is going to be a high quality game.

Saw another blog post with more details. The gameplay is confirmed to be investigative adventure portions where you walk around and just talk to people and trigger events, and strategy combat gameplay. So yes, the top down map with the missiles and stuff from the trailer is how combat is going to be, not action battles.

The game is currently......... drumroll............. 65% complete. LOL.

They really revealed this game too early.

But it sounds cool.

Sounds fantastic. Vanillaware is brave for trying this out.

looks interesting for sure, it had my attention for the entirety of the teaser.

on a side note, i find odin sphere's story really interesting. and liked how multiple playthroughs will unlock additional stories and info about the characters.

Which is probably what Dragon Crown Pro is for. It satiates their traditional action game crowd while they work on this experimental title.

Thank god they're also porting DC to PS4. Would break my heart if this bombed and killed the studio since they've been working on it forever and its outside their usual game archetype.

I'll wait on some import impressions or more footage but at the very least it looks beautiful as per usual for Vanillaware.

Clearly the shoujo aspect was dropped early.

I am actually looking forward to it. Though I love the way Vanillaware handles action games, a more adventure style game I am up for. I enjoyed the story of Muramasa and Odin Sphere more than the gameplay, which got repetitive after a while.

I am not sure what to think at this point. I love Vanillaware for their visual and beat'm up gameplay. Their storytelling is iffy.

Plus the whole thing about high school pilots being naked in those mechs is sketchy.

However I do like Vanillaware games so will give them benefit of a doubt here and wait for further previews. We won't get this in the West till 2019 anyway at this point and getting straight port of Dragon's Crown instead.

I guess it needs to disappear for another 3 years.

Hard to make progress when you remake 3 games.

Calling it now.

Muramasa Rebirth HD announced before 13 Sentinels is out.

So it really does sound like this is some kind of Adventure game with RTS elements? Kind of disappointed if true. Vanillaware makes such fantastic Action RPGs that this isn't exactly what I tune into Vanillaware for.

Well Vanillaware hasn't done me dirty before (even Muramasa I don't consider a crap game), so I'll still give it a shot likely. At worst, wait for general non-import GAF impressions.

Lol the non import part is important. I'll never forgive gaf for star ocean 5 and I am setsuna is better than chrono

I'm not going to write off the combat system just yet. It's too premature to do so given we only have a few seconds of footage to go off of. Everything else sounds really cool though. I like that they've taken opted for a more adventure/visual novel direction this time around. It'll make for a nice change of pace after playing Muramasa, Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere.

Having a story with an ensemble of 13 leads sounds a tad too ambitious though. Hope they can pull it off.

I mean why the hell not. It's a great game and having a good port with all DLCs included on PS4 (and Xbone/PC/Switch) would be a smart move.

Man... I really hope I'll enjoy this. I wouldn't mind a more story-focused Vanillaware game, but the combat in Leifthrasir was incredibly fun, as was the combat in Rebirth.

As well, I hope to see the return of their signature pornographic food.

I'm not judging. Just preparing myself in case we see more of the gameplay and it doesn't appeal to me. I just don't want to get too excited that's all.

We'll still keep an eye on it for sure.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thought this.

My man.

Anyone played the lost Vikings before?

I honestly though the game would be about coop while switching all 13 characters or Mechas.

Oh well.

Oh, I know it was going for the whole mythological epic thing, but they have utterly failed to make it interesting or captivating. I played Muramasa on Wii, btw, and the story was forgettable dreck in there too, and I played the female character and her portrayal was iffy at best.

lol, was, indeed. It's almost as if someone saw the "aimed at teenage females" and zoned in, "teenage females?? got it!" xD

Yikes. Nooooope

I did enjoy GrimGrimoire, so not that disappointed they're not going straight hack-and-slash action again. Still need to see how the gameplay fully works though.
