So, I just had a family dinner. My sister and her husband are vegans. The food was delicious oven-baked cod and there were was a vegan alternative for my sister and her husband.

He declared that he would not be able to sit at the same table where dead fish was being consumed and left to eat outside, followed by my sister.

How would you react to this? Would it even be possible to go through life like this? Like, how would you deal with representation dinners as work? Should we as family enable such behaviour? In the real world, such silly behaviour is not acceptable. Your ability to socialize with anyone who is not a vegan would be non-existent.

Sorry, I'm rambling (and a bit upset) and can't really put together a coherent argument. Discuss.

Sounds like a holier-than-thou dick. If you went out of your way to have a vegan alternative than it sounds like he just wanted to feel superior.

Just say she is being ridiculous, then go back to your family and have a nice dinner. Ignore the guy.

I mean, if they want to stick to their principles, they can go eat outside. I'm assuming they didn't go off on a tirade or anything. Not any skin or scales off your back.

It seems like that reaction is over the top to me. Were the heads still on the fish perhaps? I'm not vegan, but even I don't like eating fish with the head still attached.

I mean, if you're vegan on a moral basis, that seems fair enough.

Like, would you sit at a table where they're carving up a whole golden retriever like a Christmas ham?

He definitely sounds like he's way up his own ass and almost as if your sister is just following his lead. I would tell her she is definitely being ridiculous and if need be, don't invite them back. I'm sure you sister will enjoy not being part of the family dinners anymore because her husband is a stuck up dick, especially when effort went into making vegan alternatives.

Just talk really loudly about how good the cod is, and how you bet it's glad it ended up being so delicious on your plate.

When I hear people behave like that, it always sounds to me like they've vegans specifically so they can be pretentious rather than one of the many good reasons to be vegan/vegetarian.

Surely they knew that meat would be served? Seems like it was all a bit dramatic.

Some people are very sensitive to the smell of cooked meats but I imagine it would be hard to live your life around other people if that were true.

If a vegan equates the life of a fish with the life of a golden retriever then they're stupid.

Like, where would it end? Can't scratch your arm because you're killing countless bacteria.

Rude as hell.

Absolutely astonishing that he would do that, especially if there was no warning.

Nothing wrong with being vegan. Nothing wrong with requesting vegan food. His behavior is literally unfit for society - especially if he isn't polite enough to forewarn you of his "condition" (which is "asshole," not Vegan).

They probably believed that since it was a family dinner and if they're averse to the sight of dead animals, it'd be fine. I'm assuming they wouldn't do the same for a work dinner or other social occasion, but who knows. Weird that they'd do that even with the vegan alternative.

Did they tell you they wouldn't be able to eat at a table with meat on it?

Some of my family is vegan, and they usually just tell us what kind of concessions they need ahead of time. It's not a big deal.

Dude sounds like he's being a hardcore Diva. Nothing wrong with someone pursuing a vegan diet, there's members of my family that are as well, but making a scene and going outside over it is embarrassing
