Nice little article in Sporting News with Chipper talking about Maddux: http://today.sportingnews.com/sportingnewstoday/20090101/?pg=49&pm=1&u1=friend

Reminds me of a story I read about Maddux telling Chipper one game that this next pitch is going to be hit to you so be ready, sure enough it was hit to chipper. Oh and I believe I heard Mazzone say once that Maddux told him to come to the mound the next inning because he was lonely out there. Mazzone never had to go out there much because he was so good. :lol Maddux was unbelievable, I wonder if MLB Network is going to air some of his classic games....hopefully not until I get the channel though.. :(

C'mon Mets! Trade for Andru now that he's cheaper!!! We can almost flatline Cajole now!!
I still don't want him. Focus on signing Lowe (and maybe Ollie, too).

The mets aren't going to take Andruw. No one is going to take Andruw, even if he is still a solid CF defensively. If he were to be picked up, I wouldn't be surprised to see him patting 8/9th (depending on league). He needs to drop weight (30-40 pounds) and come into spring training with the mindset of working hard. His talent has carried him this far but he can't play off a talent anymore, he's an old 32. He started playing at 19 with Atlanta so he's been playing for a while and the way he played CF might have caused some of his injuries (elbow, knee).

Disagree somewhat. I think he still has the ability to be successful somewhere. Problem is most of us here don't want to witness it on our dime. I don't buy into his age bogging him down just yet. Send him to Baltimore (Sosa 2.0) and good luck to him.

Andruw Jones didn't suddenly forget how to hit or field or anything, and I don't think he was a roider, so I know he couldn't have fallen off completely. If he heals up, does drop that 30/40 pounds and works hard in Spring Training, I am sure he'll be a 20/25HR, 80RBI guy again. He should go to the AL where he can CF and DH somewhere to save whatever he's injured.

Everyone will just wait til that fat fuck is just released by Los Doyers. No one will actively try and trade for him.

That fat fuck is going to be 2009's comeback player of the year. He'll be the new Josh Hamilton, only instead of black tar Jones digs food. He'll go on Oprah and they'll commiserate about how much they love ring dings and ho-ho's and fudge rounds and pop tarts and rice & beans and straight Crisco no chaser then they'll both cry and inhale a live goat. Oprah will fart and the crowd will cheer. Andruw will cry (emotions and the Oprah fart will get to him).

Comeback player of the year guys.

Free agent right-hander Derek Lowe has rejected a three-year, $36 million offer from the New York Mets because he is seeking $16 million per season, Jon Heyman of SI.com said on the MLB Network.

:O

$16m a year.. seriously? I won't get excited about the Andud news until he's truly gone.

You can practically have your own personal former Red Sox team for the right price.

Manny
DLowe
Nomar
Pedro
Millar
Fossum
Flash Gordon
Foulke
Cabby and BallTheifItz

Didn't notice a complete list until seeing that hot stove section on ESPN.

Lowe for that rate like I said before is perfectly fine. They are using Burnett's contract as a comparison and based on both careers Lowe is a much better option at that price.

I think everyone expected him (that is to say, Boras) to reject the offer. The Mets went in low knowing they could. And look, he's already come down $2 milllion per year from his initial desired amount. I'm guessing they'll enter negotiations and meet somewhere in the middle.

SIXTEEN FUCKING MILLION?

If I was Minaya I'd tell Lowe "Fuck you, good luck on the Orioles" and start cursing in Spanish or something. Mets at least now can resign Ollie, and once Castillo is dealt sign Hudson. Reason Hudson hasn't signed is he's waiting on the Mets but he won't wait forever.

Are you nuts? You think Boras will allow a pitcher like Lowe to sign a one year deal?

MIAMI -- Former Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Scott Proctor has reached an agreement with the Florida Marlins on a $750,000, one-year contract with an additional $250,000 in incentives, a person familiar with the negotiations confirmed Friday.

The person didn't want to be identified because the deal is contingent on Proctor passing a physical Monday.

Several South Florida media outlets were also reporting the deal on Friday.

Proctor underwent surgery in October to repair a partially torn flexor tendon and is expected to be healthy for spring training. He missed two months of the 2008 season and was left off the Dodgers' postseason roster.

The Marlins needed bullpen help after the departures this offseason of right-handers Kevin Gregg to the Chicago Cubs, Doug Waechter to Kansas City and Joe Nelson to Tampa Bay.

Battling elbow trouble, Proctor went 2-0 with a 6.05 ERA in 38 2/3 innings last year. He has a career ERA of 4.42 in 262 games.
Not sure how much work he can get in w/ their pen...
Facing a March trial on charges of lying to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice in the BALCO case, Barry Bonds must first recuperate from hip surgery.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday that Bonds, who has said he is not retiring and wants to play baseball again, underwent a hip procedure.

Bonds had the surgery with the intent of resuming his playing career this year, the Chronicle reported, citing a source familiar with the operation. With the start of spring training six weeks away, baseball's home run king would not be fully healed by then, but could be by Opening Day, the Chronicle reported.

Both Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, and Dr. Arthur Ting, who performed the surgery, refused to comment when reached by the newspaper.

The 44-year-old Bonds, who has a MLB-record 762 home runs to his credit, last played in a major league game on Sept. 26, 2007, the end to his 15 years as a San Francisco Giant.
This guy can still hit the cover off a ball. I don't get why a small-market/low payroll AL team won't take a flyer on him as a DH.

Are people actually talking themselves into Andruw Jones being any good at all?

He flat out can't hit!

Yeah. In my opinion it just makes MLB look like a joke the way they have treated him.

Gammons needs to die. The bastard surviving the stroke while others have to go seems so unfair.

I really doubt it. At his age he'd be risking injury I think.

Sanjuro: 6. CC Sabathia. Faced with the prospect of a $161 million contract, to go out and make one start after another on three days' rest was an extreme outward sign of Pedroia's motto: "It's all about championships."

A journalist that wrote this in any other field would be laughed out of the room. For that he owes his life.

If he is in the room with other journalists there isn't much to laugh at as a majority of the profession is body language fodder nowadays.

Wishing death upon someone by saying he should have died during his stroke is just wrong.

For the most part I like Gammons more than the rest, I just don't buy into his hot stove talk much any longer. Like I said before though, most journalists are hacks now anyway with their nonsense. I dislike the insane commercialism of the sport to a degree and it turns me off as they are all a part of it as well. I prefer sports radio where I can get the gist of it and normally hear some of the writers on the air melt down occasionally...but the same rules apply to my statement about commercialism as this way I hear most fans fully bought into it as well.

You're lucky that this is MLB GAF where people understand irony, otherwise, some internet tough-guy would be calling for your head. I hate when users do that. You are also lucky that Gammons sucks so hard that he's what is known as "Libel Proof."

Usually, when a mod does some kind of moderation, there are about 20 replies just kissing all over that mod's ass. When Evilore does something, there are usually 5 pages worth of suck up posts.

I think this is completely reasonable.

And I am shocked that a Red Sox fan likes him. Wow, what a stunner. Right up there with Bill Simmons for greatest journo in the biz, I suppose.
