So they truly have no idea how to make Sonic anymore.

Iizuka on Polygon said:
It's not that Iizuka isn't on the same page, he said. It's just that Sonic Team isn't interested in repeating itself.

“From the developer standpoint, every Sonic game that we're making is taking new steps and advances, furthering the game in a new direction, and that's dictated where the Sonic series has been going,” Iizuka said.

Instead, we're likely to see more Sonic games that try new things in much subtler ways.

it seems Sonic Team lack the passion or interest to even try.

I'm glad we live in a world where Mania got damn near everything right, because this is looking like its doing everything wrong. Like I haven't seen one thing that's hype.

Sonic Team, just give the series away.

Looking at the 3D gameplay, that actually looks fun to me. It also makes me think I wouldn't mind a Sonic game that kinda takes the werehog stuff and mixes it with speed stuff. Like, going fast, and then some brief fun beat-em-up.
Problem is as it stands now, their combat isn't as quick as Freedom Planet, it essentially pauses the game, but there's no substance to it.

In most games, especially ones with good music like Mania or most modern Marios, I actually don't like invincibility jingles. If a level has a good jam playing, I usually actively avoid invincibility pickups!
ok so why are you pretending its absolutely bizarre that a developer doesnt share your hyper specific pet peeve

It's just odd to me that the cue starts over with each use of the dash. Seems like it'd get old fast. I don't expect folks to agree or share my opinion; just making an observation.

This looks alright actually, seems like more of Generations. It's just that this time it doesn't seem as impressive and fun after Mania nailing 2D Sonic. What they should have done is focus 100% on 3D Sonic and try and nail that as well. Or from a business prespective, release this first and then Mania... Big mistake there.

They should have just scrapped 2D Sonic in this the moment they planned on Mania happening.

But then they'd need something else to lengthen the game, and the 2d sections in spite of their criticism are still the best received gameplay variations that 3d Sonic has attempted.

Despite how down I've been on the game, I actually kind of liked the look of this level.

But I can't deny it:
-Lacked enemies: We do see one in the distance but it's just a basic Egg Pawn 2.0 or whatever they're calling them
-Seemed short: I know we don't see the level start, but it doesn't look like much else comes before that point
-Lacks progression: Others have said it, but damn, does that level just end.
-Reuses assets: You can clearly tell those are Lost World vines.
-Panders to nostalgia: It's all just recycled Casino Night Zone elements, but they're doing less with them now than they did 25 years ago.
-Uses that same drum sample that plagued Sonic 4's OST: ... Because other than the drums being loud & reused, I really, really enjoyed this song.
-Didn't fix Generations Physics: At all. Why do you leave him getting stuck on a ledge he was rolling down in the trailer you are using to sell the game?!

I'm actually seeing some potential with this Zone, but the execution's showing all of the same old flaws. It's a nice set-piece, so I'm hoping there's a harder route, or they're just making it easier because the original Casino Night had few enemies. But I'm still not expecting much more than what we've been seeing.

Like I said: "Casino Forest" is a really interesting hybrid level theme, but the execution here is rather weak.

Lost World may have been disappointing and had major problem, but at least if was interesting and Sonic Team were trying something new. They fell flat on their faces but at least they tried. Forces is a lazy bland game that does nothing interesting and shows Sonic Team clearly have no confidence in themselves.

Why havent the shown any Modern Sonic gameplay besides fkn Sunset Heights???

They're really keeping info close to the chest this time, this is the first new zone reveal in 5 months. Considering we've now seen 2 Custom Hero levels and 2 Classic Sonic levels, I'm guessing they'll show off one more Modern Sonic level before release.

I assume because the Modern Sonic stages are the third of the game people actually buy it for, so they want to leave the surprise and freshness intact.

It's bizarre that they're not picking clips and segments that make Classic and Custom look appealing, though.

So many of these marketing clips seem like below-average players running through half-finished stages.

You know, I wonder if Classic Sonic's levels in this game aren't secretly Generations 2 in disguise. Watching the Green Hill footage again, there's nothing in that stage that wasn't found in the original Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, and his boss battle is the same Robotnik swinging a ball from that level as well (until the surprise Egg Dragoon). And here, every gimmick is taken from Casino Night Zone. Maybe the reason there's nothing new in his stages is because they aren't meant to have new elements, they're meant to be straight remixes of zones from previous games.

Looks ok. I have no faith in this game. Generations was good but it wasn't amazing. This looks exactly the same five years later only with worse stages.

Is Jun Senoue composing the classic tracks?

His Sonic 4's soundtrack was awful, and this is only slightly better. I really wish he would just stop.

As for the Zone itself, I like the theme and the casino looks 'incomplete' which I think is a cool idea, but the gameplay still looks weak.

Why did I even look at the youtube/twitter comments lol. Around 90% of it is just littered with the same old "you can't judge the game before it's out", "this is probably just an early version" and "the sonic fanbase doesn't know what it wants!" responses.

Holy toledo.

We've got a live one here, fellas.

I agree, and the Sonic Advance 2 was great too

Yeah and 90% of neogaf comments are "It looks like crap" "Sonic Mania is better". Works both ways

In the original time travel design documents for Sonic 2, Casino Night Zone was the future version of the present day Wood Zone, so kinda interesting to see a new level combining similar themes.

I was looking up info about the music. The most we have so far are the people who composed the title theme.

Music & Arranged by Tomoya Ohtani / Piano & Strings Arranged by Takahito Eguchi

I don't really agree with those types of comments either, but those excuses I mentioned are hilarious. They don't even make any sense.

it seems Sonic Team lack the passion or interest to even try.

That's not my reading of it. I mean, I could be wrong, but it sounds like what he's saying is that the team wants to keep trying new things instead of refining the things that Sonic does right.

Which is not a bad mindset IN THEORY. But the problem is that Sonic Team doesn't seem to realize that you have to show a basic level of competency first. It's sort of like if Michael Jordan decided to pursue golf because he felt like he successfully conquered baseball.

Looks pretty mediocre like the rest of the game.

Feels like this game lacks focus. That's a shame, since this is the 4th boost game they should know what works by now.
