I haven't read the thread completely so if I repeat I apologise: Pool is not racist because it's a white ball potting a black ball. Chess is not racist if you are playing the white side, neither is draughts (checkers), othello (reversi) is not racist. Cowboy films and hackers (black and white hats) are not racist.

You are racist, you see these things because your mind seeks them out. FFS.
W.. T.. F is wrong with you guys? You don't even need to look deeply into this.. it's a dominant white chick (extra white with upside-down cross) holding a black woman's (almost like she has a uniform on ie. BPs) neck. The wording.. Jesus, you cannot compare this to inuendo, it's plain as day for everyone to see. If you cannot see it, you're either part of the SDF, or you have other issues. This is not appropriate in any region on this planet. Where is the real reaction to this? I'm guessing everyone in the States is still asleep on a lazy 4rth and the Euros are chiming in. :p

This ad is in POOR taste and COULD be understood as racist

Could be seen as racist != is racist. You can see just about any message in something if you want it bad enough (or are preconditioned to).. it's like a magic eye picture.

Do you see this ad in NA?

It's about being edgy.

So what if white is coming? What's wrong with white?

It is not about being edgy but being offensive to gain attention. Edgy would be a victoria serect ad with 5 women in bikini underwear with their arms across their bare breasts hiding them. That's edgy and hmmm, anyway.

If you think this ad is edgy go print out this AD and post it around a college campus in America and see what happens.

How is that racist? Its a black dude sucumbing to a hot white chick. LIke who wouldn't? :lol

There's racial overtones of course, but I think its more of pokin fun at racism then promoting it.

Well why couldn't they use an equally attractive black woman? And use the same style of clothing as the white woman, only in black?

Yeah, but if it could be seen as racist, then it's probably not a great idea.

I'm curious as to how many non Americans find this offensive

I don't find it offensive, but I'm a whitey. It's pretty clear that they are trying to create a shocking image by using different coloured people. That would be ok, but there is certain amount of violence implied in the image, so many people are likely to find that somewhat racist. As I said before, they are copying Benetton, but doing it badly.

Why? Because I live in the real world and I don't feel that an advertisement for handheld games system should be constrewed as having any type of racial subtext.

This is all rubbish, the people who are against it have some sort of warped view that it is a reflection of thousands of years of slavery and race hate crimes all pasted it out on the side of a building in Amsterdam. They are the ones that remind me of schoolkids, like the girls in class who would shout out that a story was sexist as the lead wasn't male, it's exaggerating something that is not there to begin with.

You really are 12. You do not see the difference of that rocky picture you posted and this ad, and then you write tripe like this? The is a context in how ad is viewed which is much different than Rocky vs Mr. t.

If the ad had the White woman with a gun in her hand pointing it at the Black woman, I think you would still say the same tripe that you have posted already.

But it doesn't, so your point is moot.

Denying the overtones are foolish, but it's just a ploy to get people talking about it. Denying that there is one is simply stupid.

I'd like to see sony spin that idea when and if they put this ad in america.

Sony: Oh we are just making fun at racism

Dude, WTF, it is not pointing fun at racism. Sony needs a new PR team for the PSP stat.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Whitey is afraid of the black man (who lives in a neighborhood where they do shoot cops, steal cars, are negatively affected by GTA, and deal drugs) so maybe we should ask ourselves: is whitey to blame?

The amount of willfull ignorance in this thread is...shocking to say the least. Apparently the ad would need the white woman bringing a neuse while dressed in a KKK uniform with the ad exclaiming "Die Nigger die! Buy a white PSP please!" before anyone thought it was racist and even then I'm pretty sure half this forum would be in denial.

No arguments there. But I'm not sure if that is an issue in the country it was developed for.

What pisses me off is the OH MAH GAWD THAT CAN ONLY BE RACIST people. Newsflash: Black and White are colours. Some PSP's are different colours. Some people are different colours that match PSP colours. Wow.

no its not. My point is that the same tripe that would come out of that guys post would be the same, and the same as the tripe you post as well.

I'm Korean-American (no not mixed born in american 100% Korean) and I think this ad is in poor ugly taste.

Oldschoolgamer

The physical form of blasphemy
I used to try and defend Sony in my younger days. Can't no more. They have been doing stupider shit as the years go buy. There is no way, anyone with half a brain cell, can sit up here and be suprised at people calling the dumb ad racist. I'm not saying it is, but it damned sure isn't a good ad. Its like the ad they had here in Maryland about the lady with some type of hair removal treatment (i think). At first it had a picture of a black/brown gorrila (which looked like a person) as a before picture. As the after picture it had a white lady (i believe) with a clean shaven body (with some dumb statement).

Not that this will see daylight here in the states, but, the USA isn't the place to put ads like this. Just go back May and april, in California. Blacks and Hispanics were on the verge of a fight. I used to think the pussification of the states is a horrible thing. I now think its done for the good of it (I still hate it).

But yea, like I said. You would have to be an extreme idiot to be shocked that some would call this racist. It looks like it.

Well most of the people doing it are simply members of SONY DEFENCE FORCE, so they can be ignored.

I find it amusing, but I don't think they needed to have the (exremely ugly) white girl grabbing the other person by the jaw. I think a simple stare down would suffice. Oh well, Sony's ads have always sucked.

That is my point entirely. This is why race cannot be discussed on the internet. Never worked on gamefaqs and it will never work here.

Exactly, it's the violence suggested by the poses rather than just the appearance of black and white models.

Most adverts are of half naked woman and no one complains that is sexist.

50 Cent holds a gun and a baby for his movie, isn't that glorifying voilence. No one gives a shit.

Devote your energy to solving real problems, instead of a billboard

It is not a simple ad. You must really love sony to believe that. A simple ad would be a white woman on the train with the psp and it enters the station with the comment "white is coming"

Just wondering - are you black?

You see, I'm asian but I laugh at asian jokes told by someone who is not asian. But I've never seen a black person laugh at a black joke told by a white person why is that? I'm not from the US, so maybe theres something I'm missing?

I mean simple in the sense that its not much to read into.

Francias Castiglione said:
The models of PSP are exactly the same, save for the colour, so why didn't they digitally clone one of the models and recolour?
But that would mean that it wouldn't be 'edgy' enough for Sony's advertising team. They have a history of riding the line with their advertising. It's a little bit unethical (IMO), but it's advertising (and business): raise awareness and sell your product at almost any cost.

Don't worry certain SDF members: Sony is loved by all so no matter what they do, no matter how in bad taste it may be, it's okay and will be forgotten by the time they sell a few more million systems and stuff. Go Sony. And, no, not all SDF member are completely crazy.

They would if it said "Black Uprising" along the left side.

But it doesn't say White Uprising on it......

Face it, no matter what, the ad would be seen as racist. What the ad has to convey is that there's a white version of a black object, and that it's better than the black one. There's no way to do that advertising that couldn't be construed as racist by someone.

SolidSnakex said:

If you honestly think there aren't any racial overtones in this ad, I've got a pearl wall in New Zealand I'd like to sell you.

Too be quite honest, it isn't really the ad that pisses me off but the outright denial by some people. If I remember correctly, racism isn't quite as big a deal in Europe and overt racism is some accepted over there so I can see why Sony would put this ad out. But to deny that there isn't SOME racial tension is just flat out foolish.

Tamanon said:

Can it be seen as racist? Sure. There were even people that found LoTR to be racist. But is that or this racist? No. There's enough actual racism going on in the world to get worked up over something like this.

She is obviously puckering her lips and is about to kiss him, how is that racist? Whats wrong with you people, do you have something against interacial affection? Looks like she is about to grab his package with her otherhand.

Tamanon said:

It doesn't have to. White's have a different percieved role in our society than blacks do, so the phrasing of a race-referential ad wouldn't be the same.

This ad implies that black was in charge for a while, but now White is back and it's time for black to step aside. "____ is coming" works when the implication is that a dominant race is coming in to take charge.

Face it, no matter what, the ad would be seen as racist. What the ad has to convey is that there's a white version of a black object, and that it's better than the black one. There's no way to do that advertising that couldn't be construed as racist by someone.

They could have done it by not turning the product into two people and then showing one person subjugating the other. It's ridiculous.

They could have just put a ****ing white PSP on the board and said "It's coming."

It's not a requirement for the ad to show that the White PSP is unquestionably superior to the black PSP, and it sure as hell isn't required to use a white and a black person, one with a look of rage on her face and the other in a position of submission, to express that.

I'm not saying the ad needs to be pulled or anything, but it's obvious what the designers were thinking.

I dont know why people keep thinking thats a dude. The black person in the AD is a chick. I kinda wonder why she is in uniform...

Remove the issue of race replace it with, say, "sacrilege", and you have the makings of any number of threads that were created for some of Sony's other ads.

For reference, here's a few of Sony's banned ads.

playstation_vatican.jpg

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2005/09/29/10_years_of_playstation_ads.html (collection of ads, not all were banned)

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6152991.html

http://cyburdine.com/content/view/24/30/ (NSFW)

There's tons more like the "Last Supper" parody (banned), but i don't have time or interest to dig them up.

i love the work that Sony's ad agencies produce. i don't, however, love this ad, nor am i trying to defend it. i just think some people need to see Sony's history of making edgy, bizarre, and controversial ads before completely jumping on the "Sony is racist" boat.

Edit: As others have mentioned, they've succeeded in getting us to talk about it. Sony FTW.
