Sega Forever: The nostalgia trip that could change the company's future

Saw a friend link this on Facebook and I was psyched. Seemed like a great thing. But, the GAF posts here are really souring me on it. I think I'll give this a month or two to ferment and see if Sega can iron out the FPS issues. I don't mind heavy ads for a free product, but I do mind terrible FPS for 30 year old games that had solid FPS on hardware with 8 MB of RAM.

EDIT: Shit, the Master System only had 8 kB of RAM, not 8 MB.

I downloaded and played all the 5 games on my android phone, unlike others so far i had no issues running the games all of them ran nicely , what i did find though is the music is of rough quality , some of the sega clones i have produce better music.

All the games have a simple layout which makes it easy to play em , cloud saves only for free version and you get ads once in a while but they can be fast forwarded and closed off quickly.

Honestly though this unity method is better than the crappy one sega put out on steam in the recent update runs like crazy but has that good mod support.

Maybe these unity games have a high requirement but i did not face any slowdowns.

Device : Redmi note 3 32gb 3 gb ram snapdragon 650
Android : 6.1

I am expecting sega to roll out some saturn games and sega cd games on steam , specially the shining force series

So you can play Kid Chameleon with the on screen controls with no issues?! Or are you using a gamepad?

I dont have a gamepad i was able to complete 3 levels quickly on the on screen controls. Since the game ran smoothly i had no issues but the terrible music quality made me turn off the game.

Played Sonic 1 now.

1. Menu is nice, razor sharp crisp native 1080p with cool game box and cartridges in 3D. :)
2. Only with internet playable. :/
3. Ingame does it not look like native resolution and the colors are dull, mehhh. :(

The Steam collection performs crappy? I've played a handful of games on there, with and without mods, and I haven't noticed any issues at all.

If this is the only way to get Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force re-released, I'm all for it.

Srsly.

It's criminal they haven't put more effort into PDS. Even if its just emulated with some filtering and AA thrown on.

I still don't buy the "we can't find any backups of the assets" tale.

Not really understanding the disappointment.

It's a collection of free games with more being added and they even have controller/leaderboard support.
What's not to like?
This. The idea is to get SEGA back in the limelight and help gauge what games people are interested in. Plus uniformity is a plus. I hope it pans out.

They tried but the retroarch guys wanted to have retroarch branding in the games, which is an insane request for something like this, tbqh. Of course if you're hired to do a service for some other company, it's going to have that company's branding and not yours. And it's sure as shit not going to have any retroarch branding anywhere. Not on something like this. Why would Sega want to boycott themselves like that? Not sure what they were thinking there.

Of course, they got pissed and tweeted this, which shows how professional they are. Stay classy, retroarch guys.
Backbone Entertainment always got to show their logo for their shitty emulation, and Christian Whitehead has his big logo splash opening up his Sonic ports.

Have you played the taxman port before? the menu is all brand new and scales with your device but the game itself is just a widescreen version of the megadrive resolution which is something like 480 x 240 I forget exactly.

The now old taxman build also played offline and didn't have ads or extra splash screens while booting up, the now 'new' forever version is a step back in quality.

Fucking Sega.

Had 2 save files in PS2, with 5 hours logged into Save 2. Booted it up today to continue and only Save 1 is there (which had 20 minutes played lol).

I'm out.

They really did it wrong by converting the current releases, all these forever sega versions should have been new releases.

I'm upset with their choices right now.

Alternatively you have people who paid for the original game complain that their old, non-64 bit versions from 2010 aren't updated and how dare they make me pay twice.

Something i've noticed, I own Sonic 1, 2 and CD on the amazon app store yet if I try to see my games to install, Sonic 1 is not there. I don't know if it's a device thing (I don't remember this being the case) or it was changed when the forever version came out on the google play store, either way it's annoying because 2 and CD install fine to my phone still.

I don't want this forever version of Sonic 1, sega, I want the original re-release without the fluff I paid for.

I forgot about that stuff since I moved back to android last year.

But there are better ways then taking an old version and bolting on tons of fluff with poor performance, that's not fixing an old release that's just cruel.

Good to know, never updating Sonic 1 now.

I've found that it's only Sonic that you can't play offline. The rest seem fine when I switch my phone to Airplane Mode.

Martin Robinson from Eurogamer asked some key questions about Sega Forever to Mike Evans (Sega Networks' chief marketing officer): http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-06-26-sega-defends-sega-forever-launch-after-fan-outcry

That said, I'm very cognisant of getting some fan wins in there as well - I'm actively looking at Segagaga as a title which will be a great thing...

Do they really expect us to believe that they're going to do a full English translation to port an obscure Dreamcast game to mobile when they can't even get Genesis games working properly?...

Yeah I really find it hard to believe.

I understand they don't wanna to use RetroArch for some corporation policy that hard to change. But do a good emulation in the place. Feels like the approach Sega had with AtGames, allowing your games to run poorly. I guess that even Nintendo used some GPL software in the Nes classic.

I really want Phantasy Star II but I don't think I could bear playing it again without a "Fast-Forward" button/feature. I just remember it felt like forever trying to traverse the maps.

Spukc

always chasing the next thrill
So i played sonic for free with adds.
Not kidding those mobile game trailers are so fucking stupid that i felt insulted.

This one video about a girl with purple hair talking about how to play this dragon game.

And another person googling for the best trading app
With real stock scam shit

Who the hell plays these games..

...

Riiiiight. These guys don't even have the budget to do proper testing on Mega Drive emulation. He's clearly just spitting something he knows fans want to listen.

Love how they keep talking like Dreamcast and Saturn games are going to eventually come out. This is already nearly dead on arrival. I have no faith in Sega to even continue releasing games after about a month or two. I hope they prove me wrong but oh my goodness these games run bad.

Picked up a bluetooth controller for Android to see if it would help, and the short answer is no it doesn't. Altered Beast seems to recognize the controller in the wrapper menu, but once the game starts proper it's like "lol fuck ur controller!11"

Kid Chameleon recognizes it, but I can't configure the buttons of course and the input lag increases dramatically.

Going to wait a couple weeks for an update before I uninstall this trash.

LOL the GPL excuse and the fragmentation excuse are golden.

So Comix Zone is slow because fragmentation... o...ok but I have a Galaxy S7 and it stutters

Mike Evans: Yeah, I think that's one of the inspirations for me - there's some amazing emulators out there in the community. The unfortunate thing is sometimes that's marred by spyware, by viruses

Radius4, I personally think filth like you, writing spyware infested virus emulators should be banned from internet. /s
Honestly though, you guys are amazing. Keep up the good work and don't let corporate get to you

These emulators are horrible. This is not a way to honor the legacy of Sega.

Really hope they don't go and replace the versions of Sonic 1, 2 and CD on the store because those are light years beyond this garbage.
Sega couldn't care less of their own legacy.
It's just a way to earn a quick buck.

I owned Phantasy Star 2 before it got delisted and now I get it ad free with no additional cost, just a quick activation. I'm only worried about them dropping support and the app goes away period because they added the GUI bells and whistles for ad based f2p models.
I paid for this a while back and it was stuck at being a 32-bit game even though it still worked.

For the vast majority of our fans it's solid, but the specialist guys who are looking for the absolute epitome of quality, we're going to keep improving for those guys.

Well that's one way to downplay legitimate and apparently widespread issues with emulation. Though if it actually leads to them improving the quality of emulation then in the end it's not all bad....but yeesh.

Namedropping Segagaga in the context of minority critical feedback vs majority praise through the Store feedback seems a bit shady considering that title is probably more anticipated by that worried minority. If they actually manage to make it happen though, then even if it's only mobile for now, all is right in the world.

If it gets released on anything, you can bet your arse people will work out a way to port those translations to the DC version.

Never forget.

I just downloaded Kid Chameleon to see how bad this emulation was for myself and, uh... what the hell? Not since Mega Man 1-6 have I seen retro mobile ports botched this badly. Even trying to time a jump on the first enemy is a gamble thanks to the awful performance. And they're actually going to suggest that "for the vast majority of fans it's solid"? If your game runs worse in 2017 than it did on vastly inferior hardware in 1992 I think it's safe to say absolutely no one finds it "solid".

Set my copy of Sonic 1 to "disable auto-updates" just in case. Can't wait to play Segagaga at sub-20 FPS (only $2 to remove ads and increase performance by 7 FPS! Best deal!!).

If you think people who can't emulate a single 68000@7.6 MHz with a pretty simple GPU and a basic SPU at native speed on a 2017 smartphone are able to handle Saturn at anything above 1 fpm, I have a bridge to sell to you.

Only kidding of course, I'll be shocked if we end up seeing any Saturn/Dreamcast games appear as part of this initiative at all (aside from maybe rebranding already ported games like Chu Chu Rocket and Jet Set Radio).

Holy shit, I haven't seen the spyware quote. That's funny because the sega forever games are full of tracking services. The great store feedback also seems weird, when Sonic 1 sits at 2 stars.

So we're supposed to get new Sega Forever games every two weeks, right? The service launched June 22nd... did I miss something, or did July 6th come and go with absolutely no announcements?

back to the drawing board if sega actually care. I don't foresee this to last even a quarter going by the current quality and the reception it's getting.

They replied to someone on Twitter saying,

"We’re a touch busy watching #Wimbledon at the moment... but we’ll have a new title ready for you this coming week!"

So it's a safe to say it will be Virtua Tennis or something like that.

Comix Zone runs horrible on a Sony Z5... The sound is horrible and there are some major input latency with controls.

Just best off getting a good emulator for ya phone and then play it that way.
